  1. Seeing our other options are Chris Narveson, Seth McClung or Zack Jackson...the answer is "more than enough".
  2. I would think the goal should be closer to 150 IP as well. That way you have some leeway come playoffs.
  3. I think everyone is overreacting a little. I mean, I guess I would prefer that we kept him. But losing a 5+ ERA isn't going to kill our team. Many people hark that "this is the year" and we need to treat it as such. Well, if we are really serious about this year - we shouldn't have 5+ ERA in our rotation. The obvious counter argument is that we could have kept him for depth. You never want Vargas to start for you. But if Sheets and Gallardo go down for an extended period he would have been a decent option. However, if the Brewers truly are in "win now" mode - we can always trade for more depth later. The Brewers are not stuck with this rotation. With Gamel, LaPorta, Escobar and more in the minor leagues we can always trade a prospect for a decent arm a the deadline. I can't fault the Brewers for putting forward their best team. (The big question is, if they decided they didn't know Vargas now...what would they have done if Capuano hadn't gotten injured!?!?)
  4. Maybe they had to clear some money for Prince & Braun's long term contracts! Parra or Villanueva will still end up in AAA when Gallardo comes back. But assuming the usual Ben Sheets DL trip, we certainly have lost a lot of depth. I wonder if the Brewers maybe think Narveson can replace Vargas with similar results for a lot less money. (Or maybe Zack Jackson)
  5. Wow. He seemed perfect for long relief. Do you still have to pay his entire salary? I would take him over McClung any day of the week. (Twice on Sundays)
  6. I was thinking about this last night as I was falling asleep. If the Brewers were to offer Prince 5 years and 90 million dollars - Boras would probably have him turn it down. But that is completely contrary to Prince's best interest. Turning it down might serve Boras in the long run, as he can collect a high percentage later, but Prince would be WAY better off taking a long term deal now. Here is my thinkings... If you are going to get a contract for 4 years and 15 million, you might want to play year by year as you try to earn the bigger "pay day". Because, while 15 million dollars guarenteed is nice - it certainly isn't rich beyond your wildest dreams. You could live off of it your entire life, but you would have to have some moderation. If you receive a contract for 5 years and 90 million dollars...you are set for life. If Prince goes year by year, perhaps he can earn $100 million over the same five years. But Prince is certainly not rich yet. He could be in a life threatening accident (Jason Williams of the NBA) or be diagnosed with a life threatening disease (Baldelli) tomorrow and never play again. Maybe it is just me, but I would much rather be set for life (The difference between $90M and $120M is pretty small compared to the risk of flaming out and never even reaching your big payday)
  7. They lost to Miami when Miami didn't have Wade or Marion. This time they lost to a starting lineup of Chris Quinn, Daequan Cook, Earl Barron, Mark Blount and Ricky Davis. Of the 9 players to play for the Heat tonight, the highest draft choice was D. Cook and R. Davis. (Both were the 21st overall pick) Blount and Lasme were second round draft choices. AND FIVE OTHER PLAYERS WHO WERE NOT EVEN DRAFTED!!! In all seriousness, the Bucks just lost to a CBA team tonight. Yeah, they haven't quit on the season!?!
  8. I am a little surprised by the comments that we don't have players to deal. McClung isn't needed in my opinion. (As my vote is to start Villanueva in the rotation with Parra and put Vargas in long relief. Although, after today, Parra might have earned himself a bit more seasoning in AAA) We also have Choate, Stetter and Pena who could all be dealt - or used in our own bullpen. I can't really imagine anything Detroit would offer back of value. But we could trade a bullpen arm if we were interested.
  9. The same could be said for Weeks. As Hardy or Escobar could play 2B. I would be shocked if Prince accepted anything. Braun is possible. I would make Hart my first goal. He hasn't had the amazing success to drive his price out of this galaxy yet. And he has had a few quotes about looking for security.
  10. Lots of people always get on Callis for his pitcher ceilings. I went back and looked at some of his chats because I wanted to give accurate information. (Callis has also said this spring that he would trade Prince or Braun straight up for Jay Bruce) Regarding Villanueva... The stuff is pretty ordinary, yet he doesn't get hit hard. I think Villanueva could be an effective No. 4 or 5 starter. Comparing Villanueva to Bush... Better stuff is Bush. But Villanueva gets more out of what he's got. Saying his peak is a #4 means that only 90 pitchers in all of baseball are better than him. (30 teams and top 3 starters from each team) I would say that is a pretty honest assessment.
  11. Tony Gwynn Jr. is very well spoken. Prince Fielder....Well, not so much.
  12. This is from Haudricourts latest blog. I am shocked that they would keep Escobar with the big league club if J.J. is not ready for opening day. While he has certainly been fantastic this spring, he still needs some seasoning. And barring a major injury, I don't see him playing a role for the Brewers this year. So why start his arbitration clock before you have to? I just assumed Nunez would stay up a few days if needed with Counsell starting.
  13. For scouts I was referring to every scouting report I have ever read on Villanueva and Parra. Callis and Keith Law both have Villanueva's ceiling as a #5 - with Parra's ceiling as a #3. For GMs, I was baseing it on two things. One, GMs get their reports from scouts. Two, Melvin must think Parra is better to choose him over Villanueva. (Granted, those are by no means "direct" opinions from GMs - but I am very confident GMs would like Parra better)
  14. Thats the downside!?! I can't imagine sitting next to the most generous Pedro as a downside. Count me in.
  15. What is the reasoning for Parra over Villanueva in the rotation? Is there any? Because Villy has a role in the bullpen? Parra is better. Villanueva has produced very respectable numbers. But the feeling (at least among baseball folks - GMs & Scouts) is that he wasn't as good as his number showed. Parra has a higher ceiling and better stuff.
  16. Vargas isn't about to become the whipping boy. Introducing Seth McClung! Because the Brewers seem determined to keep McClung - Villanueva will start in AAA. And Vargas will start in MLB, instead of taking the long role. I can't imagine anyone (other than the Brewers) perfering Vargas and McClung over Vargas and Villanueva. I feel horrible for Capuano. He was getting by on control - and was always a pretty soft tosser. I would have to imagine a second tommy john surgery is possibly career threatening for him.
  17. Thank you. Capuano's injury is exactly why you tender both Vargas and Cappy. I have no idea how this injury helps the argument that we should have let one go. It only strengthens the notion that you always need quality starting pitching.
  18. More Opening Day Tickets for Sale Not sure how these are going to end up, but right now they are selling at face value. ($50 each) If they end up going at a good price, I would rather have a Brewerfan.net member get the tickets.
  19. I am not saying Simmons really should be the GM of the Bucks. But I think saying he doesn't know anyone is pretty off base. First off, Simmons is one of the most read sports reporters. He actually talks with a fair share of NBA personnel managers. (They are usually scouts and he doesn't reveal their identity as a reporter should) Plus, why would he have to know anyone? Mark Cuban probably didn't know any other NBA owners when he bought the Mavericks. The point is, other GM would get to know him pretty quick. (Even if only because they wanted to take advantage of him) Its not like Simmons would call the Joe Dumars and the secretary would say "Bill Simmons? I'm sorry - We've never talked to you before. Well....Yes, I did hear you are GM of the Bucks now. But, well...we only deal with people we have met before. And since you are new, no one in the NBA is going to answer your calls" I believe Bill Simmons would at least be an average GM. Highly unlikely he would be great - but average is very attainable. I just think it is unfair that someone such as Kerr can get a job and no one bats an eye even though he has no experience. (Keep in mind, Kerr also got a job with a contender)
  20. True, he doesn't look as fat this year. But he has a history of being somewhat lackadaisical with his work habits. Now that he has an 8 year contract - I am not so sure he will be as dedicated every off season.
  21. I didn't mean to imply stomach flu - but it certainly reads that way. I just meant being sick I am sure he hasn't been eating and drinking as many fluids as he should.
  22. Did you actually read Simmon's article on the subject? Now, here's where you say, "Come on, a sportswriter couldn't really take over an NBA team." And this is where I answer: "Au contraire!" You don't need to be a former player to run a team, and run it well. Ever hear of Bryan Colangelo, the 2005 and 2007 Executive of the Year? He never played a minute in the NBA. Neither did Houston's Daryl Morey (who stole Luis Scola from the Spurs), Seattle's Sam Presti (who turned a trade exception into three first-round picks) or Memphis' Chris Wallace (who gave away Pau Gasol & oops, forget I mentioned him). For every Jerry West, there have been five McHales and Isiahs. Only recently, Mark Cuban told Memphis' Commercial Appeal, "One of the biggest misnomers in sports is that you just get a basketball person and let him run it. There's no other business in America that would get a salesperson to run it just because he was the best salesperson." What has Steve Kerr done that gives you the impression that he knows how to make trades? The Suns hired him and let him take on the bloated contract that is Shaq. The point is, there isn't really a "training program" for NBA GMs - they can come from any background.
  23. Two thoughts on "He's our best catching prospect" 1. That was meant as a shot to Salome. Get your act together. 2. It was a compliment to Rottino. "Sorry we have to send you to AAA, but we are at least going to give you a chance to be a big league player someday. Keep your head up" I can't imagine (Ceiling wise at least) that Lucroy and Salome aren't better prospects in Melvin's eyes.
  24. Considering he has had some weight problems in the past and will likely need to be moved off of 3B in the future... Wow. At least when he is fat he can still DH for them!
