  1. Cot's Contracts has Kawakami as making $6.67M this year and next. The Brewers would probably end up saving a bit of money considering Hart's expected arby raise, and while his performance isn't great, the Brewers would basically have him on a 1.5 year contract and could easily part ways with him in 2011. I'd think of him as Doug Davis' or Dave Bush's replacement at the bottom of the rotation, and a stopgap until a guy like Rivas is ready. The Brewers could certainly do a lot worse.
  2. As frustrating as this series (and season, really) has been, let's avoid the calling the players childish names. At least the Pirates are coming to town. I'm (again) worried that Miller Park will be swallowed in a giant vortex of suck that's sure to develop with the way both teams are playing right now. Some interesting comments from Macha in the post-game presser, basically saying he thinks one of the problems has been effort. You think? I can't remember a series where defense was such an issue in every game, even when Braun was still at third.
  3. I've merged the Peter Gammons rumor thread into the existing Hart rumor thread, as Minor was already being discussed there. I'd have to agree that Minor would be a much better return than Sanchez. A guy with #3 potential is nothing to scoff at...there are very, very few guys projected to be front-of-the-rotation guys while in the minors, and even fewer of those guys actually live up to that potential. Edit: More good comments in that Talking Chop link. Most of the people there seem to hate the idea, and aren't convinced Hart would be an upgrade over a Matt Diaz/Eric Hinske platoon in LF. They're probably right.
  4. For what it's worth, that inning did have another very nice throw by Kottaras and an pretty incredible leaping grab by Gomez on a ball that would've gone far over Edmonds' head. Loved Anderson's Major League reference in between innings, too.
  5. If you told me in April that Corey Hart would be batting cleanup by July 8th, I would've told you the Brewers were at least 11.5 games out of first place and 11 games under.
  6. Sadly, I think Cappy's career is coming to a close. He just doesn't have anything in that arm.
  7. Meh, to be fair, that was a very risky play by Sandoval that just happened to work out for the Giants. A bit of bad luck right before that, too, when Fielder's double bounced over the fence when Hart would've easily scored.
  8. Yeah, I kind of agree with GB12. It definitely looks cool, but fans aren't going to come to see the really big HDTV. Take a look at that 2011 lineup, though. Clearly this means the Brewers are going to stand pat and not trade Hart or Fielder. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  9. Definitely a lopsided pitching match-up, but I don't think many people expected them to jump on Chris Carpenter the way they did in the St. Louis series, either. Lincecum hasn't been as dominating this year, and the Brewers have hit him hard in the past -- his 5.67 ERA against the Brewers is the highest among teams he's faced more than once.
  10. All the rumors from the past 24 hours seem to indicate that the Giants would love Hart, but the Brewers aren't sure they want to trade him now. I wonder (pure speculation) if that's because the Giants tried offering Sanchez and the Brewers are holding out for more/a different pitcher. It's also kind of funny reading comments from fans on both sides. Brewers fans are saying, "Why would we want Jonathan Sanchez? He's just going to be another Manny Parra." Giants fans are saying "Why would we want Corey Hart? He's just going to be another Aaron Rowand."
  11. That's a bit of a stretch. Gallardo's injury was one that easily could have happened on any pitch.
  12. Braun's swinging at a few more pitches out of the zone than he did last year, but it's still far below the rates he swung at those pitches in his first two years. He's also making more contact on those pitches out of the zone than he ever has in his career. IMO, the problem just comes down to him not centering up on the ball and hitting it hard as much -- his line drive percentage is nearly 2% lower than it was last year, and his HR/FB is 7% lower than it was last year. I don't completely buy the injury excuse -- it's been 50 games now. If it's still bothering him, that's a huge issue and he had no business playing in those games.
  13. I read that wrong on Gameday earlier too. I wonder if Gameday had it wrong at first. "Nah, it couldn't be just 1 ER out of 5....could it?" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif I saw "5 R/4 ER" in the ESPN boxscore earlier, too, so you two aren't alone.
  14. No kidding. This bit out of the Macha strategy book continues to drive me nuts.
  15. I'm confused -- I thought starting Counsell would solve all of this team's defensive problems?
  16. His stuff was a lot better up until about a year ago. Suddenly, he's struggling to get his fastball up there much quicker than 90 MPH consistently and his K numbers have fallen off after an incredible start to his pro career: 2008 (A) - 15-3, 1.46 ERA, 10.42 K/9, 1.33 BB/9 (24 games) 2009 (A+) - 3-1, 1.48 ERA, 8.51 K/9, 1.48 BB/9 (5 games) 2009 (AA) - 9-1, 1.93 ERA, 5.80 K/9, 2.52 BB/9 (20 games) 2010 (AAA) - 7-1, 3.16 ERA, 6.4 K/9, 2.68 BB/9 (14 games) Results have still been good, but the K numbers are almost Dave Bush like now.
  17. If Anthony Witrado wanted to link to a legitimate source when discussing the Hart-to-San Francisco rumors, he could've linked to this update by Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle: When asked on Twitter about what he might cost, Schulman replied "Sanchez +". I want to say "blech" but at the start of the year I think we'd be happy to get that for him, and if we're all assuming he's playing over his head now, it might not end up being that bad in the long run. As bad as his reputation is, Sabean isn't completely stupid. Edit: Right after I post this, Baggarly has a follow up via Twitter.
  18. Witrado just made a blog post about a rumor he saw on the Bleacher Report. This may be worse than TH's "Badger Blogger" incident -- Badger Blogger was an uknown, B/R has such a huge stigma that I can't believe someone working as a beat reporter would take them seriously. For those unfamiliar, it's basically a blogging platform that lets anyone with an account create a post and publish it with no accountability. Sadly, their stuff gets a lot of publicity because they pay a lot to have it displayed in widgets on reputable sites (AW mentioned he saw it via the San Francisco Chronicle's website, but I can assure you their writers aren't thrilled with the association) and their "articles" get fed to Google News. I can't believe any beat writer would do this...it's one thing to say there are rumors about Hart going to the Giants out there, it's another thing completely to use a Bleacher Report post as your main linked source (especially when you're a beat reporter for the biggest newspaper in town).
  19. Here's a juicy one from Buster Olney, via Twitter: If the Brewers were going to trade Lawrie, you could certainly do a lot worse. I'd hate losing Lawrie in any deal, but Gallardo-Wade Davis could possibly be one hell of a 1-2 punch for years.
  20. A chance to see Madison Bumgarner up close and personal...he's been a name a lot of people seem to want in any possible Prince Fielder trade. It'll be interesting to see what his velocity looks like. Coming out of the draft he was throwing low-to-mid 90's, and this year his fastball is averaging 90.3 in his first two starts. He is just 20 (turns 21 on August 1), though, so I suppose there's plenty of time for him to regain that velocity.
  21. Among all-time Brewers ranks, Jenkins is 9th in WAR, 5th in OPS, 5th in hits, 4th in doubles, 2nd in home runs, 4th in RBI, 4th in runs created, 7th in WPA. But I guess we can keep pretending he's mediocre because his time in Milwaukee didn't end well.
  22. Yeah, he really isn't doing any worse than he did in the minors, and if the season is already a lost cause for the big league club, I don't know what could possibly be gained by sending Escobar down. He's going to need to learn how to play in the big leagues eventually.
  23. I think it's important to distinguish between Alcides having the ability to be a plus defender someday and being a plus defender now. He obviously isn't one now, and you could make an argument that he wasn't one in the minors (error numbers are even more hit-or-miss in the minors than they are in the majors, but let's not pretend high error totals are anything new with him). When scouts talk about his defense, they're saying he has the potential to be something special with his glove due to his range and his arm, but that doesn't mean he's necessarily put it together yet. As we've seen, he's still struggling with putting it all together.
  24. If his first pitch looks good enough, I say we sneak him into Randy Wolf's jersey for a few starts. They look enough alike. I wish things in Milwaukee had ended differently for Geoff, and it would've been nice to make it to the playoffs with him on the roster, although I'm sure Geoff wouldn't trade the way his 2008 ended for anything.
  25. Let's keep this focused on Lorenzo Cain's apparent promotion. This isn't a thread about Doug Melvin.
