  1. The only reason that Gagne is getting the ball over DeFelice, is that Gagne is making $10M. To be fair, Gagne also has shown extreme effectiveness in the recent past, something worth taking a chance on, whereas DeFelice can be recalled at any time. I don't mind Melvin giving him another shot to show he can be an effective part of the pen. If he continues to allow runs (2 or 3 bad appearances) we can put him on waivers, but I think it's too soon right now, let's see what he does with, presumably, a clean bill of health. Gagne looked good at times so it's not like he can't get outs anymore. We will see. I just don't see it as a bad thing to take another shot with him. Just don't put him in the game with a 1-2 run lead right now.
  2. Bring him in to a few 3-4 run games at first but I think he can still pitch some meaningful innings effectively this season. I hope Gagne's ineffectiveness was tied to his injury.
  3. Since my last silver lining thread post (26-28 record) [Well, here we are 54 games in, exactly 1/3 thru the season. Looking at how our team has performed and all the players that aren't contributing due to injury, I feel ok about being 2 games under .500. If through the next 54 we regress upwards toward what should be our true talent level with some luck and we go, say, 30-24, I would not be surprised if we find ourselves right back in the thick of the race.] The Brewers have gone 18-9, now have the 3rd best record in the NL and are already back in the thick of the race. Have to give the guys credit for not giving up when things looked bad and also to management for some good moves (bringing up Branyan, closing with Torres etc EDIT: How can I forget about Seth McClung?). Take that Richard Justice!
  4. The X also has a third of the capacity of what the Metrodome does.
  5. Awesome time! I ended up getting to both Friday and Saturday games. Was anyone at Hubert's yesterday before the game? About 10 of us were in the outdoor area with buckets of mini-Coors Lights, I felt like just yelling out "Brewerfan.net!" to see what kind of showing we had there. The outdoor area was filled with Brewer fans.
  6. Will be leaving in a couple of hours for the Humpty Dump... it'll be my first Brewer game since Apr 6, can't wait! Be loud and proud tonight Brewer fans!
  7. I have to believe that the Cubs home record is unsustainable. Are they really going to go 61-20 (or thereabouts) at home? That seems impossible to me, no matter how good a team they have. I'm not turning up any results for best home record ever by an MLB team; any takers?
  8. this plan actually delayed more immediate improvement a few years ago, and has really put this season into 'an all or nothing' scenario for melvin and yost because of the plan. so far so good this season. I'm not sure how this is an all-or-nothing season. We'll still have all these players (if we don't trade any) for 3 or so more years. IMO, we're not going to get a good sense of the job Melvin has done until Weeks/Fielder/Hardy are through most of their arbitration years.
  9. Well, his 162 game average OBP is at .351 according to baseball-reference. Ryan got off to a slow start and has seen his OBP steadily increase. I'd have a hard time not considering Braun a very good hitter (127 OPS+ so far this season).
  10. I don't know if I'd say deficient as his OBP is right around league average. His slugging makes him above average by a fair margin.
  11. Many of us wanted Sheets re-signed in the offseason (we should bring that thread back up), I think I suggested something like 4 years at $15 mil per. That certainly would've been a risk but the reward could've been great. I don't blame management for not pursuing this route. Many have argued that Sheets' injuries were not related to each other and not serious (people have been having this debate since 2005) and that we didn't need to worry about losing Sheets to a serious injury (ie season long injury). Even in his worst injury year he still gave us at least 50% of the IP we hoped for. Better than 0% like the Cards are getting for Carp or the Mets are getting from Pedro. I agree with TLB, I'd much rather have Sheets injury history than Carpenter or Pedro Martinez etc. Almost all pitchers will get injured multiple times in their careers, Sheets is no different. You kind of have to expect your pitchers to have injuries at some point during whatever contract they sign.
  12. EXCELLENT! Can't beat taking the first two on the road. No need to stop winning road games any time soon, let's get em again tomorrow! When can we get this Dave Bush guy out of the rotation?
  13. That's what so great about Russell, he's always reinventing himself! http://cornerstork.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/prince.jpg
  14. I figured the number would be closer to 10,000. The Twins culinary department might run out of dome dogs.
  15. So Richard Justice says this team is going nowhere and a week or two later Buster Olney says to watch for this team to make a run in the second half. I guess clubhouse chemistry has gotten better in the last two weeks.
  16. 2 games back of St. Louis in the wild card race... Brewers, Brewers, keep turnin' up the heat!
  17. As was posted earlier, Braun is behind 3 other OFs in SLG% who all have at least .069 points of OBP on him. Kind of hard to look past that and say that Braun is more deserving than any of those three. Having said that, I vote Braun.
  18. Perhaps he wouldn't have hit so many homers without Braun behind him all year. Just saying.
  19. The PTBNL would have to be a LaPorta or Gamel for Seattle to be interested. I do see the Brewers making a move for a SP before the deadline. Someone like Wolf or Maddux would probably be the highest quality we'd be able to find without selling the farm too much. I'm not sure Gwynn would be enough to interest SD for Maddux though he'd fit well in that park defensively for them. I wouldn't mind making a run at Paul Byrd either so that we can have the most super-postseason-ey starting rotation possible with he and Suppan.

  22. If he had some insider source, wouldn't he claim to have one in the article? Instead he bases his conclusions off of "tak(ing) a walk through the clubhouse". Even Tom implies that it would be tough for Justice to know the true "vibes" in the clubhouse.
  23. Until someone disproves math I'm going to remain skeptical McClung has been disproving it with each start. The "math" you speak of I assume is prior statistical performance but that evidence is essentially meaningless if McClung has figured something out with his control. His prior record may have no insight into his current true talent level. Early in the season I would've been one to give up on McClung but I agreed with giving him a shot in the rotation when they did it. If McClung continues to pitch like a #2-3 guy, we can make some noise.
