  1. The thing is if Gagne blows up, we have several other options to try. Riske, Mota, Torres could all close. It's not like he'll cost us enough wins to go from a contending team to one that is being "run away" from by the Cubs.
  2. Yeah I'm not really banking on the Cards getting to 81 wins (I think I picked them to finish last in the division).
  3. I just don't know how a real baseball analyst could actually think the Cubs would run away with the division this year. I could see the Brewers, Cubs, Cards and Reds all finishing with at least 81 wins this season.
  4. I can't believe that the Cubs had a significant edge talent-wise in 2007 (or an edge at all) when the division came down to the unfortunate result of one AB between ARam and Coco. Obviously there were other opportunities to change the outcome of the 2007 season, but if Cordero gets Aram out in that single AB, our viewpoint becomes much different.
  5. If Gross is Jenkins Lite, wouldn't that mean that he's at least close to being a starting candidate, and at the very least a viable MLB player? It's not like Gross supporters want him starting over Braun or something... we just don't understand why some seem to want Gross DFA'd.
  6. Typical Weeks, HBP & BB. They loaded the bags for Kapler? Are they NUTS?
  7. XCel just gets crazy during Wild games and for some reason the Twins homer hanky has made the leap to the hockey arena. Must be a Minnesota thing. Fantastic game last night, especially 3rd period and overtime. I'm not a hardcore hockey fan but I do enjoy watching the playoffs.
  8. It makes sense because opposing pitchers knew about rickie's wrist and were less apt to "pitch around" him, hence, fewer walks available to take. I agree that Weeks being in the leadoff slot forces him to let some appetizing first pitches go by. I don't think a leadoff hitter should be THAT conscious of trying to see pitches. Sure you want to take the walks the pitcher gives you, but sometimes that first pitch is the best you'll see all game. I love seeing him swing away early in the count (at strikes of course) because he still has a good eye and can work his way on base late in the count.
  9. Damn I wish this was a late game so I could tune in for the whole game. What a pitching matchup. I think we can win this one, I'll say 2-1, with Jason Kendall scoring on a Ryan Braun triple in the 5th the deciding run.
  10. [double post]
  11. Episode 9 -- Seth and Derrick look for a mustache trimmer for Doug Melvin's birthday.
  12. Hitting WOAH SOLVDD, eat a hot dog Prince!
  13. Maybe Yost could have used some of those, you know, intangibles to determine he was out of gas? It cuts both ways. Villy hadn't given up any runs and had no pitch count issues to worry about. Unless intangibles = ESP, I don't think Yost missed anything he should've seen. I agree with hauser about our SP. Besides Sheets, no one pitches beyond the 6th inning with any regularity. Yost wants to squeeze out all he can from his starters considering what happened in last season when his bullpen wore down in the last two months. However, now, we seem to have much better depth in bullpen and Yost shouldn't be worrying about this in a 1-1 game (not that I think he was with Villy yesterday).
  14. I've told this story before, but it fits here. About 10 years ago, my best friend, my brother and his friend and I went to a Mariners/Twins game in MN. Griffey was manning center and my best friend was a huge Griffey and Mariners fan, so we decided to start yelling in between pitches or batters "GRIFFEY!" as loud as we could, as our seats were just a few rows up in right center. Keep in mind we were just teenagers then. Eventually, Griffey started looking for who was yelling his name and we would wave and cheer. By the sixth inning, he was looking directly at us between every single pitch and we'd wave and cheer every time. He'd wave to us while we cheered as he was trotting off the field after an inning. I know, big dorks, but Griffey has a rare personality you just don't find among modern professional athletes too often.
  15. I don't think there's a choice other than cutting McClung. I can't see the Brewers trading Turnbow before he's really gotten a chance to pitch this season. We don't know yet how the bullpen is going to pan out; we may need Turnbow to pitch some meaningful innings, which I know scares Brewer fans, but let's not pretend he is worthless.
  16. Yes, it's good because it diminishes the impact of his lack of power because he has the pitcher hitting behind him (fewer baserunners on average) and enhances his OBP since he is batting basically at the top of the order after the first inning with Weeks, Fielder and Braun there to drive him in. I like Kendall's speed too; I'm just really liking Jason Kendall so far.
  17. Good luck in the bigs Air-Non! I'm excited that Gabe Gross gets to play baseball again for a little while.
  18. Best avatar ever created trouty! Lots of great ones mentioned, I do tear up once in awhile, but one that I don't think has been mentioned is when Will Smith gets the internship in Pursuit of Happyness. Almost full-on crying.
  19. I could see Gross traded since he could probably start for a few lower end teams and be a great bench option but that's the only way he won't be on the ML roster at any point this season. Either Kapler or Gwynn would be the backup to Cameron, wouldn't need both.
  20. I'll take the over today and I'm 100% so far on the season (1 for 1).
  21. Nope, right there with you.
  22. nice video TLB, I had goosebumps that whole time. And that really was a terrific game to attend, lots of fun for the good guys!
  23. I think a catcher calling a good game just helps the pitchers let loose on the mound, meaning that they don't have to think about why the catcher is calling this pitch/location at this time, allowing them to focus more on the motion of their bodies and their mechanics. When I pitched (I'm no pro either), my catcher pretty much knew what I should/wanted to throw which made it easier to "bear down". I'd say from a run-scoring standpoint the effect is minimal, but I think a good game-calling catcher has an effect on many situations but specifically in tight situations, which can be the difference between winning the division and losing out by 2 games. Obviously, random variance and team performance determine which situations come up and how often, so the result is pretty much unquantifiable.
  24. Anybody remember Zach Duke? Or Francisco Liriano?
