  1. The only one I've been to in Minnesota is Whitewater State Park near Elba, MN (probably about 2.5 hrs south of the cities). We go every year to fly fish the Whitewater River. There are three branches of the river so there are different options to fish. Of course I don't know if you're wife would be into a fishing trip; there are some nice hiking trails that climb the bluffs with some really pretty views of the landscape and river, also there's a beach just a short walk from the campground. The campground is clean and there are camp sites bordering the river, but they do tend to book pretty far in advance. We like to get riverside campsites and we usually book about 5 months in advance.
  2. It certainly seems that there have been a number of injuries that don't get properly diagnosed until well after the injury. I'm sure others can remember the examples.
  3. I doubt very much that Gerut is dogging it in a contract year. I'd say this is the Brewers training staff's lack of knowledge about heel injuries. Depending on the depth of the contusion, this is an injury that can take a long time to heal. There is little to no room in the heel for swelling which makes it impossible to put pressure on the heel post-injury. The injury must be properly rehabbed (rested) right away or his heel may never get back to what it was. He probably needed to stay off his heel from the day of the injury for three to four weeks for it to heal quickly. I still feel the pain once in awhile from my heel contusion about nine months ago. Taken from MLB.com: "It is getting better on its own time," Gerut said. "Whatever time frames we had, clearly they were too aggressive. It gets better when it gets better."

  5. Check out the art museum, it's a marvel of modern architecture. Maybe see a show at the Riverside Theater. Take a walk through the Pfister hotel.
  6. What hawing said. Also, though, acting dominant will help. Mean dogs are no match for a human that is not afraid. Does it nip at you? Or your dog? Like Homer said, I'd give it a little "nip" with my fingers in the neck, stand stout, shoulders forward. It works unless the dog is foaming-at-the-mouth angry. I also wouldn't worry about liability concerning pepper spraying a dog.
  7. Basically, if you're in a major conference and don't come in last place, you're in the tourney. This just sucks. For God sake, keep it at 65!
  8. 87 wins. Win wild card tiebreaker game against the Dodgers. Having an average rotation will be a big help. The offense scores only 20 less runs throughout the season and the pitching gives up 90 less.
  9. My hometown team Clayton made it to State in Division 4 (NW sectional) for the 3rd time in 10 years but fell by one point in an exciting game to Green Bay New Lutheran. They made it interesting, hitting 4 three pointers in the last two minutes to draw it close. Nice to see our little school (town population: 500) maintain such a great program. I played on the 2000 team that went to state my senior year where we lost in the semi-final to Wausakee. Jim Tracy went nuts scoring something like 29 points against us.
  10. Lastly, mlb.tv is a on a major delay so if you have friends call you like I do at times they will call you before the batter even comes up at times. I'm assuming the delay is just a couple minutes then?
  11. I think I have plantar fasciitis since it's the bottom of my foot that is sore. But it's not the heel area. It's the area of the ball in your foot. Oof, that sounds painful. I've been going through a similar thing, I suffered a heel contusion about four months ago when I slipped going down the stairs in my split-level. I was relieved when the x-ray showed no bone damage, which could've taken surgery and years to get back close to 100%. However, the first three weeks were unbearable. Any amount of pressure I'd put on it was excruciating so I was walking around on my tippie-toe on that foot. Eventually the extreme pain subsided but it still bothers me as a dull ache when I'm on my feet for too long. I wasn't able to rest it as much as I needed to as I'm on my feet at work all day so I'm afraid it's gonna be something I'll have to deal with from now on as it is a very difficult area to treat. That bugs me.
  12. If the Badgers get a healthy Leuer back, they have five players who can score 20 points any given night (Hughes, Nankevil, Bohannon, Tayor, Leuer). They are one of the best defensive teams in the country. I have a hard time believing they can not play with anybody on a neutral court. The major weakness I see in a tournament game is if Nankevil gets in foul trouble but at least his backups have shown they can rebound and hang tough defensively.
  13. Thought I'd throw out a plug for our BF.net pal Fatter than Joey. For those of you that don't frequent Brewcrewball, check out the first part of FtJ's interview with Brad Woodall! It's interesting to hear about Woodall's connection with Willie Stargell. It's also fun to laugh at the epic fail of a sentence in the second paragraph. In all seriousness FtJ, I very much enjoy your style and honesty in your contributions over there.
  14. To me that quote means he's going to be playing CF everyday against RHP. Which for some reason doesn't really bother me.
  15. Oh my God, what? 75 wins?! How are we worse than last year? And the Yanks come in 3rd in the AL East? Might as well chuck these predictions in the dumpster.
  16. Wow, so many negative vibes on the Office lately. Kinda like when Cheers was nearing its end I guess. You just can't expect the show to stay fresh without changing and you can't expect the same things to continue being funny. I still enjoy every minute of it.
  17. Late to the party but I like the signing. It's not getting me all antsy in the pantsy but it at least gives us a good chance of having a league average rotation and I think a good chance at 85-90 wins. As for the young pitching/signing FA pitchers debate goes, I think it's easy to be reminiscent of "what could've been". Melvin had to think about getting butts in seats, not just fielding a WS competitor. Of course, fielding a competitor puts the butts in seats, but I think we as Brewer fans became victims of the whole "Brewers have the best farm system and will be World Series contenders by 2008" epidemic that plagued message board and websites in the early 2000's. It always seemed expectations were that we were going to be a dominant team for a quite a few years, which was unfair. Trying to scapegoat Doug Melvin IMHO is unfair. IMHO no other GM could've had the success that Melvin has had. The Brewers have turned around so much; fans are coming out in droves, the team is competitive and in the upper half in payroll. Enjoy it.
  18. Agree about the wolves. They say an average wolf will eat 18 deer in a year. We hunt just west of Hayward, WI and last year we saw two wolves just across the lake from our cabin. Now this year, we had one howling at a train just a couple hundred yards from our cabin on Friday night. Then, on opening morning, about 10 minutes before sun-up from just over the next ridge I heard a wolf howl about 100 yards from my stand. We've hunted in Hayward since 1978 and these are the first two years we've seen/heard wolves. We had 12 hunters and bagged five bucks and a doe Saturday thru Wednesday. There was far less shooting this season, though that may also be because conditions were not very good for seeing deer.
  19. By replacing Cameron with Gomez/Gerut? Escobar will have no problem being as valuable on offense as Hardy was last season, so how does that take us from 3rd best offense in the NL to a "major question mark"? I'd really like to see you engage the discussion instead of firing off snippets of negativity to no end. IMO, we will be better offensively at 2B, RF & C this year, with a dropoff in CF & maybe 3B.
  20. If Gomez stinks it up the first couple months (not starting every day, but getting a fair shot), you just play Gerut more, who many people were ready to give the bulk of starts in CF to anyway. I can see taking a shot at Gomez because of his youth and upside. At least he had a couple decent OBP seasons in the minors. Maybe he wasn't the right fit for the Twins offensive philosophies. You can say it was a waste to trade Hardy and we should've kept him but the Brewers needed to free up money for pitching. Keeping Hardy on the roster would've been a waste. I'm sure Melvin did his diligenceAt least we don't take a hit defensively at a prime defensive position. I'm confident Melvin will upgrade the offense elsewhere (C, RF) to keep us a top flight offense. Adding a healthy April-May '09 version of Rickie for what we hope is a full season should help as well. In the end, I think a sacrifice had to be made at some point to give us a plausible chance at attaining GOOD starting pitching.
  21. I had mostly given up hope that Hardy was going to net any significant pitching help. This way, we get an excellent defender in CF to replace Cameron and save a bunch of money that we can use in a trade/FA acquisition of a pitcher. Or you can trade Hart+ for Vasquez and sign a corner outfielder that will produce offensively. I think as is, our lineup takes a bit of hit, but not as big as you might think. I think Melvin plans to upgrade one other position yet this offseason, maybe two (Kendall, Hart).
  22. I think it's easier to judge balls hit to center than to left. Generally you'll have more time to react and the angle of the ball coming off the bat is easier to judge. I think Braun could play passable in center but I don't think he has good enough OF instincts to be a productive defender out there. RF or LF, sure.
  23. So I guess Mike Sherman was a good coach then? How does Sherman as a coach in any way compare to Melvin as a GM? How does football have anything to do with baseball?
  24. The real question is: Can Felipe Lopez pitch?
  25. My gut says no, they are not still in it considering the pitching in the rotation. But there is still a shot. I suppose we could rattle off another 20 of 25 streak like at the beginning of the season, and it seems like that would be what it would take.
