  1. That's what I thought Reilly, so we shouldn't have to worry about giving up any picks for signing Hoffman. Combined with the fact that he'll command fewer years than Wood, that makes him a much better option for us IMO.
  2. Like I said, you can't really have it both ways, either he's not even close to as valuable on the open market as some think (EVERYTHING taken in to consideration) or he's going to get beaucoup coin. But that's the point. You can't really be sure what Sheets is going to get on the open market like you can with Sabathia. Whoever takes on Sheets will be taking a risk but how much will they be willing to pay for that risk? Maybe teams will be TOO hesitant and the Brewers can get him for minimal years and dollars which teams like the Brewers must try to do with a limited bankroll and arby raises looming. Other teams haven't seen as much of Sheets as we have and may overestimate the health risk. If Sheets gets offered 4 years for $60 million, I'd say no thanks. But 2 years for $30 would be something to consider. It'll be interesting to see what kind of offers Benny gets. I just think it'll be hard to replace Benny's 150-180 quality innings next season unless you trade Fielder or Hardy, which likely leaves a hole in the lineup. It's not going to be easy for Melvin to field the same quality of team next season.
  3. I'd rather go after Javier Vasquez, and I don't think a whole lot of him. Garland would be a last-ditch option if we couldn't sign/trade for a top 60 SP.
  4. Are the Padres going to offer him arbitration though? From what has been said, I doubt Hoffman would want to go back to the Pads but if he gets something like $10 mil /1 year in Arby's, what's to stop him from accepting it? The Pads wouldn't want to pay that contract and would be forced to trade him for a bag of balls, no?
  5. He may go for much less than 5 years, $75 million. Why? Because of his health. I'm saying Sheets' health is a MAJOR issue with his status. Obviously. The elbow thing at the end of the season threw his FA status into the air. If he hadn't had an injury he probably would be right up there with CC and would be almost guaranteed a 5 year contract. You're probably right that the Brewers have no chance to sign CC (though if he doesn't want to be a Yankee I still think we have a shot) but that really has nothing to do with offering Sheets a contract. Offers from other teams on Sheets may not be as high as he was hoping and we may be able to outbid the other teams. Sheets will wait until CC is signed by somebody because at that point he could be considered the best pitcher remaining in free agency.
  6. You may see it as unrealistic but Melvin must think there's still a chance they can sign Sabathia and it's obvious they can't afford both on long term deals, hence not going hard after Sheets just yet. Plus teams are going to be a little more wary on Sheets than Sabathia, giving the Brewers a little more time to see what they would want to offer him. FWIW, I think the Brewers have at least a shot at signing Sabathia if he allows them to counter.
  7. The question is: is there another viable guy to go after for the rotation that would be a better option than Sheets that won't deplete the major league team? Some out there are not as good as Benny and some are just as "injury prone" as Sheets. If the choice is sign Garland to a 4 year deal or Sheets to a 3 year, I definitely go for Sheets.
  8. My bet would be that we wouldn't be able to rely on CC taking the ball every fifth day either. Dude is probably gonna have some issues in the next couple of years with all the abuse from the last few seasons. I wonder how many pitchers have actually made all their starts in the last, say, three years [looks at Ennder].
  9. My thought on Vasquez is if you're the Brewers and you're going to go after a SP in trade, you try to do better. Vasquez is probably better than those other than Bush in that list, but how much better? I guess if you don't have to give up much it's not a bad deal, but will it make the Brewers that much better than having one (or more in a platoon) of those guys in the rotation? I guess I'd just like to do better since we're probably looking at picking up just one SP for 2009. Vasquez would be low on my list of guys to target.
  10. I don't think we need another league average starter. We already have Bush/Suppan/McClung/Villanueva.
  11. Towers doubts Peavy would accept trade to the Crew. Downer.
  12. Rosenthal says Fielder unlikely to be traded Not much we didn't know here, but I agree that we really can't afford to lose Fielder's bat this season.
  13. I watched most of the postseason, missing a game here or there b/c of something else going on. I like watching the games but like others, hate Joe Buck/Tim McCarver and FOX's insistence on using bad stats and baseball axioms, so much so that I will yell/argue with the television. However, I do like watching as much of the games as I can. I will watch Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs games and of course nationally televised regular season games. Like Patrick, I grew up without cable TV and I used to watch every televised sporting event. I can't stomach the NBA anymore, love college basketball, wish I could watch more NFL games, don't pay much attention to college football and love to watch golf. Yeah I said it.
  14. One question would be why would the Nats be interested in Prince? CMIIW, but aren't they still rebuilding and a couple of years away, by which time Prince would be close to hitting free agency? If they were an average .500 team with great pitching/defense and not enough pop in the lineup, it would make more sense to me. I don't see Prince going anywhere this offseason. Maybe next winter.
  15. *cry I guess the Brewers didn't believe Dillon fit anywhere defensively, because his bat sure as heck is good enough to be on a major league team. Joe will re-surface somewhere next year as a PH. I guess I should probably retire my avatar now.
  16. My wife and I may have walked right by you. We were there Sat. night, although we went upstairs where it was a little quieter. We went upstairs to order a drink around 6:30 when the bar downstairs was packed. My g/f wanted an Effen & Seven but mispronounced is as "Eiffen". There were a few others up there that seemed to all be going to the Mencia show.
  17. The Braves were probably better than their record showed this year. They lost a ton of 1 run games IIRC.
  18. Why should the Dodgers get a banner but not us?
  19. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. We really enjoyed the downtown area, we mostly visited Mo's Irish Pub, good service and it was right next to Riverside. We were there before and after the show and Sunday for the Packer game (which was pretty quiet oddly enough). We took a walk through the Pfister and Hilton hotels, checked out the art museum and lakeside area. I was impressed with how clean and historic everything looked. We didn't have near enough time to do all we wanted but we'll be back soon. As for Mencia, he was okay. My girlfriend is the fan.
  20. I know we've had threads about the nightlife in Milwaukee before but I can't seem to find the right one. My girlfriend and I are taking in the Carlos Mencia show tomorrow night and we want somewhere fun to go after the show to get a few drinks with other fun people. We'll be staying downtown so I think we'll want to go somewhere close to the Riverside Theatre. We'll also have a few hours to kill before the show, so any suggestions for fun stuff to do would be greatly appreciated!
  21. Ignoring or distracting from bad behavior goes a long way. Sometimes if my g/f's son (3 years old, almost 4) is throwing a tantrum over some miniscule detail we'll ignore him and just continue a conversation or start mockingly crying until he starts to smile or tells us to stop. He realizes on his own that he is being silly and forgets what he was so upset about. Taking away cartoons or treats works sometimes too. Kids at this age are tough and you have to trust that they won't hate you for long when you are tough on them.
  22. I'd likely be playing DeJesus in CF instead of Cameron alongside Hart in RF; I don't think I'd trade Hart for DeJesus either. I'm not really comparing the two, just taking umbrage with the idea that DeJesus isn't a good player. Though, if teams have "figured out" Hart, we may already have seen the best of him. He sure seemed to be fooled by the same pitches all year.
  23. [DeJesus] hasn't really accomplished anything in the bigs. Well, DeJesus put up this line in 2008: .307 .366 .452 .818 That's batting average looks real nice playing 140 games for the Crew next year and his OBP would've been behind only Fielder for regulars. He has maintained a high BA and a .360-ish OBP for 5 seasons now so you can be somewhat sure about what you're getting. He's signed relatively cheaply possibly through 2011 with a club option for that season. My only question is would he be good enough defensively in CF to start out there full-time?
