When Do The Brewers Trade a Catcher?

Brewers Video

Any discussion of the Brewers trading a catcher begins with looking at the progress made by William Contreras.  During the off season prior to the 2023 season, the Brewers were part of the three-team trade that brought Contreras to the Brewers from the Atlanta Braves.  At the time Contreras was seen as a young player with great offensive upside but also as a defensive liability.

The offensive profile didn’t change during Contreras’ first season with the Brewers. (.289 average, .367 OBP, .457 slugging for a .825 OPS) to win the silver slugger award for catchers in the National League.  What did improve is his defensive profile.  Contreras worked and improved his defensive game to become a slightly above average defensive MLB catcher.  (defensive runs prevented 13th,  6th in pitch framing, 11th blocking pitches and  a less impressive 34th in throwing runners out at second at 17%.)  (Stats from Baseball savant)

In the wings is prospect Jeferson Quero. He will likely begin the year at AAA this year with a potential call up during 2024.  Quero consistently rates as one of the Brewers top three prospects.  He has hit at each level of the minor leagues while playing up two or three levels for his age.  (.278, .349. 445 for a .779 OPS) And he possesses the defensive chops that Contreras is working to achieve. Quero was eighth in the Southern League with a caught stealing rate of 35%.  Quero is naturally a better defensive catcher than Contreras.

If Quero continues to progress, the Brewers are going to have to make a choice about their future behind the plate. Contreras is 25 and won’t reach free agency until after the 2027 season.  Quero is only 20.  There is the potential to move Contreras to another position. But if his catching ability continues to be at least average, moving him to first base is wasting his defensive value.

If the Brewers trade either catcher this off season it will be a telling sign that the Brewers are either moving into a rebuild mode, (trading Contreras) or a more aggressive win now mode (trading a top prospect Quero) than is typical for this team.  It is unlikely to see a trade this off season.

The Brewers thoughts on the future of Contreras could become a bit more clear this spring training if we see Contreras play more at another position on the diamond.  Hopefully the Brewers are also exploring if Contreras could be an option at third base rather than at first.

If Contreras’ future position will be catcher; than a trade closer to the trade deadline or after the 2024 season is likely.  If at the deadline, this will likely be a trade for longer term contributors rather than a trade for a rental player.  More likely they will be looking to both improve the current team and also player(s) that will contribute in 2025 and beyond.

Trading an elite level catcher or catching prospect doesn’t happen often. The Brewers will be in the fortunate position of having this type of trade chip available.  This trade will be one of the biggest moves of the Matt Arnold tenure as General Manager and will impact this team’s ability to compete for division titles for the next four to six seasons.

Not sure how Gordon Ash plays into things, but I don't think either catcher needs to be moved any time soon.

If Quero turns out legit behind the plate you can start him 90-100 games there with the remaining 60-70 going to Contreras plus another 70 or so at DH to round out his workload.

I don't see why they'd take a guy who's played catcher his entire life, but isn't an elite athlete and move him to 3B. That's rare and when it's done, it's usually down at the lower level of the minors.

He doesn't need to play 3B. He needs to continue catching. There's no rush. It'll likely take Quero a couple years before he's ready to produce anywhere near Contreras. I'd guess even then he'd have more value defensively, less offensively, and at that point they can determine if trading Contreras is worth it. But 4 years away from Free Agency, I see no reason to stunt his growth at C to play him at 3B.

I think this is a problem that sorts itself out in time. Best case scenario is that Quero goes on fire in 2024 and trading Contreras becomes a legit option 12 months from now.

I think someone said 4 years until free agency for Contreras. Brewers usually don’t trade their good assets until 1-2 years left. Most likely no decision will need to be made this year. It’s still a big step up to AAA and a bigger step up to Pros. Where they would probably want to ease him in. Yes if he pushes the issue. But for me, if the brewers are competitive, you keep the one with the proven mlb track record and trade Quero 1-2 years down the road. If not competitive, or Contreras underperforms or gets injured.. you might do the opposite..so many variables, but I don’t think it’s a high priority consideration at this point unless Contreras is open for extension.

Since 1B has been an abyss for years (excluding Santana, who did a nice, short term job), I could see that happening..You don't peddle hitters with great numbers until you have to..

As Sveum alluded to, the DH role can help sort this out. I've never been a big fan of having both catchers in the lineup in that fashion but they did it a number of times in '23. However right now there's a surplus of OFs to potentially fill that role & you don't want to bring Quero up here to sit, so barring health issues we may not see Quero as soon as we think.

Once he's ready, it's like they say, a good problem to have. I could be wrong but if Quero is as good as we all expect/hope he is, then when the time comes I suspect using Contreras as a very attractive trade chip is more likely than splitting them between DH/C, or trying to make a 1B out of him.

Wouldn't trade either of those brewing giants at this time. Start William Contreras  and allow Querro time to gro as a backup. William C is the real deal and so is his backup.
