After reading the latest on C.C., I'm thinking it's more of a possibility than I thought. If we do end up making a deal for Sabathia, I'd still like to see them add another arm, perhaps Maddux. I can't imagine he would net too much, but I don't pretend to know his value. Would Gwynn + net Maddux? Any thoughts would help.

 

But just imagine dealing for Sabathia and then Maddux. Our rotation for the stretch run:

I think Gwynn could get the deal done. I mean, he was traded for Cesar Izturis a coupld years ago.

 

And that rotation is sexy.

Maddux would be a big upgrade over Bush and would help us gain an extra game or two in the playoff hunt all the while strengthening our bullpen because Bush can be used as a LR guy and McClung can be used as a 7th or 8th inning pitcher before Torres takes over.

I gotta believe Gwynn would be enough to get the deal done because he would spark interest in an otherwise dismal time in SD. TGJ will draw people to the ball park just for the nostalga factor not to mention gives them a nice little piece to controll for the next couple years.

How cool would it be seeing both the Maddux brothers in the dugout? Not to mention it would be cool to see the future 1st ballot HOFer play in Milwaukee even if its for a couple months

I would LOVE McClung in the 8th inning role, seriously. He would throw harder because he would only have to pitch one inning.

Gwynn and Crabbe would also get it done. I wouldn't mind if we lost both Gwynn and Crabbe since both are blocked from ever getting to Milwaukee.

I'm not sure why Crabbe keeps getting thrown into these scenarios--the Pads basically gave up on him earlier this year already.

 

And Maddux's value is higher by demand now than it was...I think it'll take a little more than just Gwynn or some Izturis-peer

Crabbe was just not ready for MLB and he was being sent down to the minors. The Pads still love him its just that the Brewers bought him back when he the Padres sent him down. I believe that is what happened.

I agree Elcaballo, although you have to get over his departure. McClung could just rear bach and throw gas 4 time a week, the turn it over to Torres.

You are correct Nate. No matter how much they loved him, they would have had to keep him on the 25 man roster all year and apparently he just wasn't ready. Were he to be shipped over in a trade, he could be optioned to the minors. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

That was his problem as a reliever was throwing as hard as he can. While his control has been average at best as a starter, it is twice as good as it was as a reliever. Making him slow down a bit and pitch has benefited him very well.

You are correct, Crabbe was a rule 5 selection.

I like a Maddux trade a lot more then the Sabathia trade rumors. I think if they are serious about getting an arm I think if they could get a leader with it is extremely valuable. Plus he will cost us a hell of a lot less then Sabathia. OR maybe I just hate the thought of trading La Porta away for a SP we'd have for 3 months.

Maddux is a Dave Bush quality pitcher at this point in his career. His acquistion will just mean I'll be focused on football as usual in October.

Maddux would add depth, which has been overlooked to this point because no one has gone down since Yo. He seems like he'd be a solid 5-6 inning guy, and as a 4th/5th starter, he'd be very solid.

I don't think anyone is expecting Maddux to be a #1, #2 or even a #3 pitcher.

 

We just have very limited depth. And frankly, you can't feel too happy with McClung and Bush as we push towards the playoffs.

 

Maddux for three months has more value to the Brewers than the entire careers of Gwynn & Crabbe.

I'd do Gwynn for Maddux without hesitation. Don't expect Maddux to come here and dominate, but a hot month is certainly not out of the question.

I agree Splitter. I'd do that deal as TGJ clearly has no future here, Brantley is better and coming on fast. I'd gladly take Maddux as a 5th starter

Funny what a difference a few months makes. I was advocating McClung for a late inning spot during the winter and was nearly laughed off the boards.

Recte, people seem to forget Seth was used often in the 7th inning late in '07. As Maddux says, they define their own role.

McClung gives up too many runners to be a late inning guy in my opinion. He has worked out well as a 5th starter in my mind that is where his value is. If we get too many pitchers hopefully he can be the long guy and CV can be the 8th inning guy or at least 7th inning guy if Gagne finds some stuff.

That rotation makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. I was going to say something else, but it would probably have been R rated.

I think Maddux might not be a bad idea. Though at this point I think he'd be more like the '82 team's acquisition of Doc Medich... while C.C. would be more comparable to Sutton. I don't remember Medich being very good that year, but his acquisition allowed the team to dump Randy Lerch who was very Dave Bush-esque that year. I guess the question is whether Maddux is better than Bush or McClung. In any case, he would add depth when the inevitable injury occurs....if one of the starters goes down now, who is the next option - Villy or Zach Jackson I suppose? Likely Villy, so then the bullpen would get even weaker.
