I am shocked that Rodriguez was able to convince any team, even the Nationals, to give him a two year deal at this stage in his career.

I don't think the shocking thing is two years, it's that it's $5-6 million dollars over that two years. He made about $2.5 mil last year and he stunk. Baseball economics is confusing.

No the Nationals are confusing. They are trading their Rule 5 pick in order to pay a relief pitcher with a 4.68 FIP 2m. And they released a pitcher with a 3.95 FIP to make room for him.

This reeks of being one of those "Let's sign a veteran recognizable player to hopefully put some butts in seats", kind of signings.

Supposedly they want Ivan to mentor Jesus Flores. I also wouldn't be surprised if he is Stephen Strasberg's personal catcher. I think Pudge will make a fine backup, though the dollar amount is a bit high. If Henry Blanco can last 12 years as a backup, there's no reason to expect Ivan to not be able to last 2.
