It pretty incredible that two teams can so completely dominate a level of advanced football. These teams could probably compete at the 1-AA (I dont think they call it that anymore) or Division 2 Level.

Yeah, you would think the NCAA would consider making some changes based on having the same two teams make the championship over and over again.

My one, small regret about this particular matchup is that the two teams' colors are so similar. Until I see a helmet design I find myself wondering which purple/white/black team is which.

I'm glad Charter (internet) has now made ESPN360.com available and will be showing the game as I lost ESPN Classic on DirecTV when they changed some sports programming.

Considering 1-AA offers 63 schollies and D3 zero, I think Whitewater would tough have sledding against 1-AA.

A friend of mine has a son who was recruited by a few D1 schools, but never offered a scholarship. He went to a 1AA school and was a preseason all-conference pick and such his senior year. At D1, he probably would have been a role player. At D3, he would have been a monster stud. The difference is huge. Some guys develop later and such, but most of the guys in D3 would struggle to make a two deep roster in D1...bigger, stronger, faster.

 

Only a player or two on my HS team even played at the D3 level, and they were a playoff team.

 

All the RB's today looked very small, and I suppose they are 25-50 pounds lighter than the D1 and NFL guys.

The point is, one or two players may well be NFL worthy, but the depth isn't close to D1 or even D1AA. Much of the linemen would have been outweighed by 75+ pounds versus a weak D1 team.

Not sure how the program is received now, but way back when, it was strange to hear anyone planning to attend a game, and attendance was maybe a few hundred.

 

Though they were also not playing for any kind of championship outside of the WSUC, which they never won.

Not sure if this has happened in previous years, but they averaged 6,013 in the regular season but only 2,110 in the playoffs.

That's whay happens in the minor league playoffs as well. I suppose it has to do with season tickets and the like.

Just in regards to talent levels. I dont know how far, geographically speaking, 1-AA and even division II teams recruit from their campus, but I would guess that it is as regional as divions III. In Wisconsin there a lot of very talented football players and their choices regionally are Division I (Big Ten) and then what? There is a division II league in Minnesota, but I would guess that many of Whitewater's players arent heavily recruited by DI-AA and Division II, and sometimes given the choice they might even prefer to play for Whitewater and dominate than play D-II and be on an average team.

 

The bottom line is the difference between Division I and any other division is huge, but when you get to DI-AA, DII and DIII I think the difference is much smaller.

RD, around Wausau, many athletes sign to play D2, in MN and the Dakotas mostly. While I'm sure there are a few kids who prefer staying close to home or being a big fish in a small pond, when they interview them on TV after they sign a letter of intent, they all seem thrilled to be recruited at all, and like it's an opportunity they could not resist. I don't think many kids offered a free ride end up at the state schools, though I would think some may end up there after a year or two at a D2 school.

 

Also, the MAC schools recruit heavily in the Upper Midwest, as the Big Ten does not dip far below the elite.
