BTW, "I'm famous for something" might be misleading. In fact, it's not very famous in the present time at all.

It isn't known because of an event, that will be my hint.

Is it that specific tree? Or is it that type of tree that is "famous"?
It is this specific tree. There is a plaque underneath it.

This is driving me crazy. How about another hint?
This tree is notable for its location. I would say former location, but the tree hasn't moved, just everything around it has changed. It used to be located somewhere trees are almost never located, in fact this might have been the only one, at least in the 20th century.

is it the biggest tree of some sort? i'm not familiar enough with trees to know what brand it is.

It's a Magnolia tree, but that probably won't help you.

The Magnolia tree was in center field of the stadium where the Atlanta Crackers used to play, Ponce de Leon Park.

Crap, maybe I shouldn't have given the type of tree. My next hint was all queued up, too:

Everyone agreed the tree was very fair, and while some probably thought unfair was a better description, nobody would have called it a foul tree.

Nice work, trwi.

Here's a great picture of the park out to CF. The tree in question is the one slightly to the right of center, but as you can see there was simply no CF fence... fair territory goes all the way back to that barrier that guards a railroad track.

According to that website only two players ever hit the tree. One was Eddie Matthews.

The tree James Dean hit when he died ?
James Dean didn't hit a tree. Actually, the accident he was in wasn't his fault at all. LINK
