RIP SRV -20 years ago today

Tough to believe that's it has been 20 full years to the day since Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed after the show at Alpine Valley. Where has the time went? I'm really feeling olld. This was one of the first in a string of many concerts that I had wanted/planned to attend, then didn't attend for whatever reason and regretted it later because it would have been my only/last chance to see them live. I was wondering if SRV is popular with the younger set, or if it's just us older fogies that dig him.

A bit of trivia: Stevie Ray Vaughan was the first artist to perform the national anthem before a Major League baseball game on the guitar. I believe it was at an Astros home opener.

He was the singer for Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. Definitely best known for is guitar playing though. He was toward the top of Rolling Stones best guitarists ever list, and one of my guitar playing buddies asserts that he was the best guitarist ever. I know that I kind of 'skew old' on this site, as evidenced by the fact that I've never heard of a lot of the bands on the 'best albums' thread. Conversely, I was wondering how many of the younger people had heard of SRV. If you haven't, you should definitely check him out on Youtube.

I admit, the first thing I think of is "oh yeah, that helicopter crash," but that's because it happened in Wisconsin. But I was generally aware of his skill with the guitar as well. And, like RockCC, I am feeling a little older upon realizing that crash was now 20 years ago.

SRV was the greatest blues guy of his generation, hands down. Being a guitar player myself for 25 years now, his style influenced me greatly.

Definitely best known for is guitar playing though.

 

Probably the most the most heard SRV work, was his guitar on the "Let's Dance" (Let's Dance, China Girl) Bowie Album -- After he died, "The Sky is Falling" was a pretty big hit.

 

His death was a pretty big deal here in the state.

My brother was at the Alpine Valley show. It was SRV, Clapton, and Robert Cray I believe. They all came onstage at the end and played together.

When SRV died it was huge news in WI. However Al, (pictured below), was desperately trying to complete his bottlecap collection.

20 years ago, I was working 60-80 hours a week in Eau Claire. I have little doubt why I never heard about his death. Considering he played blues, I also have little wonderings why I never heard his music.

i'd just assumed Al was kidding about not knowing, the way i was about being known as Jimmy's brother. i wouldn't call him the best guitarist of all time, but SRV would definitely be in my top 3. even SRV himself said he wasn't better than Hendrix.

 

if you ever get a chance to see his performance on Austin City Limits, you'll be a fan. and he's got a real interesting life story about falling into cocaine addiction and his recovery soon before he died.

Just because someone claims to be and takes pride in being a very bland person out of the loop of popular culture, that shouldn't make them deaf and/or blind.

 

It's almost hard for me to buy that Al is 41 and claiming to have never heard of Stevie Ray Vaughn. Is that really possible, we aren't talking about some semi-obscure blues artist like say Buddy Guy? You'd almost had to have lived in a cave to be 41 and not at least have heard of the name Stevie Ray Vaughn. What could he say next, that he may have heard the name Jimi Hendrix before, but thought Hendrix was known for inventing the Rubik's Cube, not for being a legendary musician?
