Let's go from worst to first.

 

Animal Collective's "Feels" - I actually don't have much to say about this album. It's an indie rock album somewhere between My Bloody Valentine, Liars and Clap Your Hands. A few alright songs, including Bees and Banshee Beat, but nothing that memorable. I'd give it 2.5/5.

 

Arvo Pärt - "A Tribute" - Estonian minimalist composer's "greatest hits." Directed by his greatest fan and follower Paul Hillier. I didn't think the album hit its stride until the Berliner Masse suite. If you love vocal arrangements, it is hard to get better than Pärt in terms of recent composers. Good mixing of multi-articulate swaying vocals with occasional organ backing. A good thing to add to any collection, but not essential. 3/5.

 

John Cale's Paris 1919 - Recently remastered and reissued with a number of largely unimportant bonus tracks, this classic comes back to life. After his days with The Velvet Underground, Cale has been noted for his drastic dynamic shifts. Paris 1919 finds him at his poppy best, mixing twinges of folk and classical influences. Highlight tracks include Hanky Panky Nohow, Macbeth and the title track. An essential album for any pop admirer. Really not that far from the Beatles or Alex Chilton. 4/5.

Finally, someone else on BF.net that can share the Black Keys love.

 

I had most of their stuff prior to this thread, but since have started giving them a more in-depth listen. The one I really love is the disc of Junior Kimbrough songs, "Chulahoma". I'd imagine that was the EP you were talking about. That's probably my favorite of all their stuff, even though it's all pretty good.

Right now I'm listening to an advance of the new Beck album (I think it's out Tuesday), "The Information". If you dig Beck, you'll like the album. Very good. I tend to be a Beck apologist, to a degree, but I'm loving it. There's bits and pieces of all Beck's phases on it, trippier stuff, slower stuff, everything you could want.

 

M. Ward's "Post-War" is pretty good, too.

I bought Velvet Underground White Light White Heat a couple days ago...and i will say that its much more my speed than velvet underground with Nico...sister ray is incredible

 

edit: New Ben Kweller album is very good as well..not much different rom his old stuff, but still incredibly enjoyable

The best VU, hands down. I've never understood the love affair the critics and some fans have had with the Nico album. I think the Warhol association, the cover, etc. makes people think that album is better, or even more significant than it actually is. Not that it's bad, it's just not as good as the third or White Light. I put it on par with "Loaded", which I enjoy.

 

You're going chronologically, though, and that's cool.

Last week I picked up The Roots new one Game Theory, probably 4-5 tracks that are vintage Roots stuff, I'd say 3 out of 5.

Cartel - Chroma

 

I was led to this band a few years ago because one of the original members was in another band with a close friend of mine...he's since left the band, and they've blown up...bad move on his part...but, this album is just incredibly fun. You've heard a lot of it before, as it has a very similar structure to fallout boy and saves the day...but it keeps its joyful nature and pop hooks where those other two talk about death and breaking up with stupid girls...that's not to say that Cartel's lyrics are good, but that they are pretty cliche, and therefore easy to ignore...

 

This album is not solid gold...nor is it for the overly pretentious...but if you can get past the fact that its basically loud pop music, it's a heckuva lot of fun

Another really good Lou Reed album, "Coney Island Baby" just got re-released, too.

 

It's not my favorite of his albums, but it's very good. I mean, it's Lou Reed.

 

Another couple that I got - the Cold War Kids "Robbers & Cowards", and The Rapture's "Pieces of the People We Love".

 

Anyone get the Sean Lennon album? Seems like an amazing backstory surrounding it, but I'm leery.

I'm listening to the new Willie Nelson album "Songbird" that comes out on 10/31 right now. Excellent. Produced by Ryan Adams, a mix of some covers and some new stuff. I'm really liking the cover of Garcia's "Stella Blue".

I am at work and opened up my iTunes to listen to some music. I checked the music store and saw the Foo Fighters released a new live acoustic album. I bought it. Very cool.

Squarepusher - Hello Everything

 

Bass guitar, xylophones, and a boatload of electronic noise. What's not to like? If you like weird electronic music, or just want to try something new, listen to the first track Hello Meow.

Everything Is Illuminated OST

 

While the movie was mostly hit than miss, the soundtrack is mostly hit over miss. Paul Cantelon, who orchestrates about half of the songs here, brings warmth and heart to the movie, and is in generally rare form. There are also a number of suberb eastern Euro tracks, including two very good tracks from Gogol Bordello. All in all, it's a good listen if you haven't seen the movie, and a great listen if you have seen it (which you should have). There's a few misses here, and the tracking gets a little redundent, but a good listen. 3.5/5.

 

Acetone - Acetone/York Blvd.

 

Two albums here, each from the Richie Lee-led Acetone. Lee committed suicide back in 2001, so we'll never know the ultimate zenith of the band, but we'll know they were pretty good at least. Their self titled album has one of my very favorite songs, "Every Kiss" while it contains a number of decent slo-core jam sessions, highlighted by "Shobud".

 

York Blvd. may be the more musically accomplished of the albums, and its first three songs are very catchy. However, the album quickly reverts into blase musical noodling, and the end parts aren't that interesting.

 

Acetone - 3.5/5, York Blvd. 2.5/5.

Reviving the thread while I am listening to The Shins new album. Phantom Limb is an awesome song. I have a lot of driving to do this weekend so I should get to listen through it a couple times which is what it usually takes for me to decide if I like something or not.

A Discontinuous Line by The Vandermark 5:

 

indie jazz that is very out of left field for me, but it's good to expand your sonic horizons ... the first time I stumbled upon Vandermark - on a different album - it sounded like John Coltrane fronting Fugazi ... give it a shot if you're feeling adveterous and/or complacent.

I've heard that Shins album a couple of times, and I just don't get them at all.

 

Another album that comes out on that day (1/23) that I love is "I Can't Go On, I'll Go On" by The Broken West. They sound kind of like a cross between Big Star and "Being There"-era Wilco, a lot of power pop stuff. I'm fairly certain that this band is going to blow up, at least in the way that TV on the Radio did.

 

Of course, I also got ahold of the new Bloc Party this week, and it is awesome.

For the most part, the only music I ever buy anymore is vinyl. Sometimes I'll buy cds from my friends, but mostly I just have someone burn something for me.

 

I'll buy local releases (Goodnight Lovin, Beach Patrol, Chinese Telephones, Bear Proof Suit, Catholic Boys, Quest For Fire, The Kind Of Jazz Music That Kills, Get Rad, Call Me Lightning), but besides that I generally only get an album by a touring band if I know it'll be hard to find down the road and they really blow my mind.

 

I've been pretty broke the last year or so, so I take my chances downloading bands. None of em are at any type of level like Metallica that would sue, so I'm not concerned about that.

 

With that being said, the only albums I think I got this year are

Gym Class Heroes - As Cruel As School Children

I was listening to this album for a long time illegally, but I finally bought the CD so I could listen to it in the car. It's amazing, produced by the lead singer of Fall Out Boy, Patrick Stump. They even throw on the remix of Cupid's Chokehold on there too.

 

The Get Up Kids - Guilt Show (2003?)

This is an old CD that I really liked when I downloaded it, but then I purchased it for the car. My favorite track on the disc is the last song, "Conversation" which reminds me a lot of older Oasis songs.

 

Tenacious D - The Pick of Destiny OST

Decent Cd, not as good as the previous album, but that's a lot to live up to.

 

Ben Folds - Supersunnygraphic - The LP

This is the collection of the 3 - 5 song EPs that Ben Folds put out over the internet in the past 2-3 years. I severely recommend this disc if you're a BFF or BF fan.

I have the Scientists album on CDR somewhere, it's really good...the track that stood out for me the most was Bet Ya Lyin'

 

Check out the Carpettes, there's obvious Clash influence...my favorites are the Starjets, 20/20, the Beat, the Plimsouls, Elton Motello, and the Keys...there's a bunch more I can't think of right now, but try to track down any of those, you won't regret it!!!

Silent Steeples - Dispatch

 

Easily in my top 5 albums of all time. Every song is an acoustic masterpiece, along with their next album, Bang Bang. A shame they broke up.

 

On a side note, who else know of Dispatch? Anyone?

I am into every type of music except country. My favorite bands are Smashing Pumpkins, Queens of the Stone Age, Motley Crue, and The White Stripes. That said, I just bought Public Warning by Lady Sovereign. She's a white female rapper from England. Also bought We Are Pilots by Shiny Toy Guns. They are like an electronica - rock indie group.
