Edwin Jackson

Rotoworld confirms we were scouting him as well, Melvin could just be doing some DD or the trade market for 3b and SS are so bad he feels he can't upgrade there so he's looking at the rotation.

Jackson would be a strong 5th starter and Narve moves into the long role or maybe even situational???

One could argue Jackson to be our 4 and Wolf at 5...In the end, i think we add Furcal at ss, Betemit, and another pitcher

Jackson isn't going to come cheap and I doubt the Brewers can win a bidding war for him. They might have also been there for Teahen (hopefully not but I could see it).

Am I looking at the wrong numbers? He isn't impressing me much . He wouldnt be that big of an upgrade over Narveson in relation to what I think it would cost. Starting pitching depth is a beautiful thing however if we could keep Narveson stretched ou in AAA.

The Brewers should have added Jackson years ago, when he was dealt for Matt Joyce while Melvin was sleeping at the wheel. Now they should concentrate on the massive whole at SS that Melvin failed to address before the season.

I don't think Narveson is well suited to the situational role. I just don't see Jackson as a huge upgrade. His WHIP this year is 1.427, roughly the equivalent of Narveson's 1.449. The other ratios are all pretty similar too. K/9, Narveson is 7.8, Jackson is 7.3 for instance. Jackson has 8 "quality starts". Narveson has 10.

When on, he is very tough, but he lacks consistency. The starters the Brewers have just need to pitch up to their capability. That's more the problem than anything else.

According to a tweet by Jon Heyman, STL is possibly going to aquire Edwin Jackson from the Blue Jays once he's trading to them from the Sox. If this happens, it'll be a nice pick-up by STL and will allow them to move McClellon back to the BP. That's dangerous as well.

I'm not overly concerned. If I were an StL fan I would be furious about the possibility of trading Rasmus. As big of a pain in the butt as he appears to be, 24 year old CF like him, who aren't eligible for FA until after 2014, don't exactly grow on trees.

While I like Jackson, I think I would be holding out for a little more. Maybe make him the centerpiece in a run at Ubaldo. Hopefully this is a deal that will bite the Cards more than it will help them. A 2012 rotation of Wainwright, Garcia, Jackson, Carpenter (maybe) is pretty darn good though.

Looks like it's official according to mlbtraderumors. Some $$ still needs to be finalized, but Jackson to the Cardinals and Rasmus to the Blue Jays.

And just as a side, if this deal is completed, Jackson is a FA after 2011 with Scott Boras as his agent. Carpenter is also a FA after 2011.

We'll see if it helps StL make a significant run in 2011, but Rasmus appears to be a significant price to pay for a FA-to-be. I still hold firm...I'd be very upset if I were a StL fan.

I agree. Jackson is a pretty nice upgrade from Kyle McClellan, but Rasmus being gone hurts the offense. Seems really stupid on St. Louis' part if you ask me. Which I'm all for, obviously.

I don't see Rasmus as a major loss for the Cardinals. Jay is capable of playing CF and he's having a better year anyway. Plus I don't think they'll have a problem getting another OF somewhere.

Rasmus is a far better defender, is 2 years younger, and was pretty damn valuable last year. He's struggled this year, but it's pretty stupid to give up on a good centerfielder who put up a .858 OPS at the age of 23.

Edit: I see Rasmus has a pretty bad UZR, so maybe he isn't the defensive player I thought he was. Anybody have an opinion on Colby's defense? I always thought he was considered a plus defender.

Not sure why LaRussa and Rasmus couldn't just get along. St. Louis just lost a big talent for an average pitcher. If Duncan can fix his command issues then it's not a terrible trade, but Jackson still will be a FA with Borass as his agent.

Jackson is probably a Cy Young candidate in St. Louis considering what they've done over the past several years with some of the steaming garbage they've had down there.

I don't think Rasmus is a huge loss for the Cardinals this year. Jay is playing well, and I would say they're fairly equal going forward for this season. But beyond this season it will hurt St Louis, because Rasmus has so much potential (which was seen last year). 24 yo CF that can hit like he did last year are a pretty useful commodity, especially at the price he will be paid the next three years. Because of that potential, they HAVE to be getting more than just Jackson for him. The Blue Jays have a pretty good system, so they have expendable prospects. I don't see any way it's just a jackson/rasmus swap.

Anthopoulos has been doing a pretty good job in Toronto since taking over. To put this in full context, this would be 1/3 of a season of Edwin Jackson for 3 seasons of Colby Rasmus (all 3 arbitration seasons). That's nothing short of robbery & I hope the Cards make this mess of a trade.

EDIT: Via MLBTR, Rasmus to TOR for Jackson, Octavio Dotel, & Mark Rzepczynski is all but a sure thing. So it's not just Jackson for Rasmus, but still probably not a wise move for St. Louis.

Well it's Jackson, Octavio Dotel, and some LHP out of the bullpen whose name I wish to not attempt to spell. So it's definitely becoming a little more worth St. Louis' while. Shore up the 'pen and add a decent SP.

Can you imagine what this board would be like if we gave up a prospect like Rasmus for 2 months of Jackson and a couple arms? LaRussa really did not like Rasmus so the trade makes a little more sense but Rasmus for 4 years seems like way more value than what they got
