2012 Summer Olympics Thread

Didn't see a thread so I figured I'd start one.

I was sorely disappointed when I realized Brittney Griner isn't on the 2012 Women's Basketball team. I was looking forward to watching her posterize some poor 5'5" Croatian today. Oh well.

GO 'MERICA!

I was thinking the same thing. Why isn't she on the team?

^Ah, that makes more sense. I imagine the US women shouldn't have much trouble without Griner. I really enjoy watching them just pummel opponents, so hopefully they can get it started a bit earlier in their next game.

In soccer, Neymar has looked as good as advertised from what I've seen, incredible dribbler.

First time I've ever seen somebody say they enjoy women's basketball.

I don't typically care for it, but I thoroughly enjoy the US teams pummeling clearly mismatched opponents in any sport where they can do so.

Ok so talking about women's gymnastics as a guy is an easy way to get mocked but I am going to do it anyway. The new rule that each country can only have 2 women in the all-around final is ridiculous. The girl from the US who didnt make it was top 5 or something and the top 24 made it but because she had 2 other women from her team who were top 4 she doesnt get to go. That is such a stupid rule. It would seem you would want to see the best competitors in the world in the final but that is not what is going to happen. If only the girl would have been born in Canada or something I guess

Yeah it really sucks to be Wieber right now. Its not like she can be pissed at herself for a horrible performance or pissed at her teammates that beat her out. She did well enough that she was easily in the top 24 but some stupid arbitrary rule kept her out. This is the equivalent of the MLB every team needs an All Star rule except this is the freakin Olympics. For a lot of gilrs this will be there only shot.

I was fascinated by archery this past weekend. The Mens Team competition was crazy; US lost on the last arrow

I'm going to be such a girl right now, but I can't remember the last time I got to watch the equestrian events. I saw some of the dressage over the weekend, and I'm watching the cross-country stage right now. So far, I haven't seen anyone fall, but one of the U.S. horses did balk at one jump, and has struggled to clear a couple of others.

What are all the channels the Olympics are on?

NBC

MSNBC

CNBC

NBC Sports Network

Am I missing any; unfurtunately my package with DirecTV does not include NBC Sports.

I guess the BCS is running the Olympics now, guess the same thing happened with 3 other countries as well. So, a total of 4 women in the top 24 in the world won't even get a chance to compete for best all around because they were born in the wrong country.

NBC is also streaming the Olympics online.

I realize this probably isn't true, but I picture you watching the equestrian events, yelling at the TV trying to psych out the horses & riders into falling.

NBC, MSNBC and NBC Sports all air a mishmash of events. CNBC is all boxing, Bravo is all tennis, and there are two additional channels created specifically for the Olympics called Olympics Basketball and Olympics Soccer which obviously only air those two sports.

Not quite, but close--I did make comments to myself about some near misses, and about one jump in particular where the horse lands on a steep downslope.

You have no idea how rewarding it is to my juvenile sense of humor that you're actively rooting for falls. Outstanding.

Does anyone know if NBC makes event replays available online and I'm just missing it? Because as far as I can tell they don't let you watch half the events (it seems like they only have highlights/replays for events that the U.S. won...)

I hate NBC.

I won't mock you, they're amazing athletes who do things I can't even comprehend doing. I can't imagine what the weeks after the Olympics are like for these gymnasts. I know they have world championships and the like, but to reach the pinnacle of your career before you graduate high school, and then watch your skills deteriorate from age 18-22 must be really tough.

And yes, the two from each country rule is absurd.

Before today, I always thought the pool in Water Polo was only 5 feet deep. Now that I realize they're treading water and swimming the whole time, I find it much more impressive.

I also can't stand the tape delays. For me to avoid hearing the result of the race yesterday I'd have to pretty much go internet free for the day, which I don't do.

I wish websites would just have a "Click here for Olympic Results" instead of having them on their home page automatically.

I don't get cable and am at home during the day, so I am limited to whatever NBC is showing. I don't mind the whitewater kayaking or the water polo, but I really don't care about volleyball or the swimming prelims very much. This is when I wish they would show more of the obscure events...I enjoy those more than the mainstream events.

I already know to avoid Twitter, ESPN, etc. if I don't want to see results during the day but it seems everyone has to get in announcing results. I clicked on Bloomberg site yesterday to read a financial article and sure enough the top story on the page was the swimming results and men's gymnastics results. It's one thing if a sports site does it, but a financial new site not affiliated with NBC?
