Sonny Gray- Let's GO FOR IT! Here's a plan...

Posted
Sonny Gray is a 5'10" pitcher with a late load who has a history of arm problems. I really don't think you are getting 2 more years out of Gray. There will be an injury in there somewhere. I would not pay for him at full value.

If you don't trade Brinson or Hader what are really giving up??

A lot guys who should have a positive WAR for 6 years, vs Gray on rental for a couple years.

Speculation is that the Yankees would include Estevan Florial and Jorge Mateo for Sonny Gray. For those down on Corey Ray's 2017, take a look at Jorge Mateo's 2017 at High-A before being called up to AA. Aside from maybe strikeout rate you could make an argument that Mateo (also 22 years old) had a statistical worse performance at A+ than Ray.

I am among those that would rather the Brewers don't make a move to acquire Sonny Gray, but if the Brewers offered Corey Ray, Luis Ortiz (or Burnes/Woodruff), and solid third/fourth pieces I can't imagine they wouldn't at least be in the conversation to the end.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

In the last 30 years, how many pitching prospects have come out of the Brewers farm system and had results on the level of Sonny Gray? Five, maybe? Our history of developing arms is horrific. Holding on to all our pitching prospects doesn't guarantee any of them become a legit 1 or 2 like Gray. If you have to give up an Ortiz or Burnes, do it. If the team trends downward next year, flip Gray at the deadline, recoup some losses, but at some point you have to transition out of perpetually rebuilding.

Since there is about an hour until the deadline, I'd say at this point they ARE in the conversation to the end.

If the Yankees haven't finished the deal yet they're still listing. If that's really the offer count me in as wanting the Brewers to re-enter the bidding. At that price they could probably still land Gray without giving up Brinson or much pitching.

Haha, fair enough! :)

It was said this morning Gray talks would go to last hour. So should be interesting if Yankees just ironing things out or if other teams still seriously in it.

Just flip him, like it's that easy. Almost never works, just like Lucroy and Jeffress.

It's not about any prospect being as good as Gray. Maybe one will be, maybe not. But you get 6 years out of a prospect, vs 2 from Gray. And 2 years that don't mean much yet, sorry to say.
