It's great to hear that if he does indeed sign this week, that he'll be joining Beloit to play with Fielder for the rest of the A ball season in 2003.

Here's to a soon to be #1 ranking on the Power 50 for Rickie!!!

No, if its full they can put Ritchie on the 60 day DL.

And Nuke can go to the 60-day too.

The negatives don't start until the offseason when we'll have to keep one extra player unprotected from the Rule V....

Players who are not on the 25 man roster but who are on the 40 man roster include:

- Matt Childers

- Ben Diggins

- Jayson Durocher

- Matt Ford

- John Foster

- J.M. Gold

- Pedro Liriano

- David Manning (temporarily on 25)

- Luis Martinez

- Shane Nance

- Nick Neugebauer

- Ruben Quevedo

- Todd Ritchie

- Glendon Rusch

- Cody McKay (?!?)

- Alejandro Machado

Diggins is out for the year, Gold is out for the year. Neugebauer is out for the year. Ritchie is out for the year. Not sure why McKay is on the roster.

This stuff is complicated.

I'd have to declare J.M. Gold the odd guy out. We could probably stash him in Indy - I don't think a major league club would keep him on the major league roster for a full season.

Well, since moving Nick to the 60-day DL is a no-lose situation (he's already been on it retroactively 60 days), it seems to be the best move.

Although i'm sure Cody McKay and JM Gold could safely be outrighted, if the need arose.

WHY IS JM GOLD ON THE 40 MAN ROSTER CLUB

{I'm not just a member, I'm a client}

I have to believe a couple guys would, and should be dropped before him: Manning and McKay come to mind right away.

As pointed out, with 60 day DL issues, this won't be a problem until the offseason.

at some point this week, david manning will be outrighted...i suspect...hes not a prospect...hes not that good..and he will clear waivers...so he will lose his newly acquired 40 man spot...problem solved

of course, ritchie could/should be outrighted as well

It'll be interesting to see if Manning is outrighted or optioned. I still think you get a slight advantage from moving players to the 60-day DL that can be.... but it's really just academic, because in the long run, there's a 0.001% chance that it'll matter.

Seems to me that a team could take him in the Rule V, stash him on the DL the whole year, and keep him that way. I'm still not saying he deserves a spot on the 40-man instead of others this off-season.

I can't see why any team would take Gold in the Rule V draft. Basically they would be paying $250,000 (his salary plus draft fee) to watch the guy sit on the DL and accrue service time. No way that happens.

im nearly positive that you cant just stash someone on the dl if he is rule fived..

so if jm was rule fived next year, then a team would have to keep him on the 25 man for all of 2005

no team would consider this

seriously though...we had a discussion about this before

This is from ESPN's primer:

A player drafted onto a Major League roster in the Rule 5 draft must remain in the majors (on the 25-man active roster or the DL) for all of the subsequent season, or the drafting club must attempt to return him to his original club. However, since a returned Rule 5 player must first be placed on outright waivers, a third club could claim the player off waivers. But of course, that club would then also have to keep him in the majors all season, or offer him back to his original club

No mention of how many days here, but ESPN's transaction primer gives rather incomplete info on options, so it's not gospel.
