If that's true, it's probably likely the people who told him to bring the bag are dangerous to say no to.

If he has family still in Mexico, this is a very possible hypothetical scenario. These guys families are pretty easy to target, and especially some small time guy like this probably doesn't have much in the way of security or whatever. $500 bucks could be an "or else" offer. Obviously all hypothetical, as we don't know the rest of the story, but it happens.

It's not quite as simple as this, but police don't need much to be able to search your car. Frankly is safe to just assume that if you've been pulled over they can search your car without your permission.
