Though this mornings news about the Smiths played out exactly as everyone expected, I'm a little surprised they let Turner go considering the relatively small cap savings they got from releasing him. He's been a pretty nice asset on the line overall in his time here.

Perhaps Turner's injury he suffered late last season has the Packers a little worried. Just a thought.

This does appear accurate, as late reports indicate he was released with failed physical designation.

Even with a small amount of savings, Turner's position should be pretty easy to replace.  Our depth on the OL is probably the best of any position we have.  Nijman is probably as good as Turner at LT/RT.  They could probably get Kelly back in the interm until Jenkins returns.  Might not cost a lot, but we can use that $3m savings too.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Looking at the terms of Rodgers' new deal, it appears it is set up to tie him to the Packers for the next three years, through his age 40-41 season. Interesting that they have chosen "the road not taken" from back in 2008. My guess is Jordan Love sticks around as the backup this season, then is dealt next offseason.

Sounds like effectively at 2-year extension (putting Rodgers in GB for the next three seasons, as RRB noted) with two dummy years on the back end. Cap number down to about $28m. Packers still over the cap, but can probably get the $$ they need with Cobb/Crosby cuts and a Jaire extension. If they can extend Adams quickly, they would hypothetically have room for a couple of FAs as well.

looking at what is available as a veteran backup. Dalton may be the best choice. If thats the answer, I agree with you that they may be best to just hold on to Love, unless you get something that blows you away before the draft.

I'm pumped at the thought of the 2022 Packers' defense with Kenny Clark in the middle bookended by P. Smith and a surging Gary, Campbell back at MLB, and a healthy Jaire paired on the other side by Stokes in year 2 at corner.  A bounceback year from Savage and another steady year from Amos, and this defense could be really, really good even if they can't get Douglas resigned.

Hopefully they add some quality at DL/LB depth in the draft to support some really good talent on that side of the ball.

Have to agree. They've found a way to basically keep the core of the team together thus far. Knowing they'll supplement via the draft, I feel pretty good about the team especially if they can get Rasul back somehow and sign a Rick Wagner-type o-lineman for depth there.

My goodness.... early reports are that if Rodgers retires after this season, the Packers must carry a $68m dead cap number for 2023.

i think its pretty much understood that when this era ends, there will be a year or 2 of reckoning. Which is fine, just when that happens keep you picks and draft well. .

That's 100% true. But it also means that every offseason for the next couple of years will be the Rodgers watch, which is pretty insufferable, just IMO.

So it was 50 million per year.

Why did Rodgers make it sound like the contract talk was all a big lie when it wasn't? There's nothing cap friendly about this deal.  Not that I expected it to, but don't make it sound like you're doing us favors.

That isn't accurate. It is very much cap-friendly for 2022 and 2023, maybe 2024. That's the window. Things will be ugly for awhile after that, but that was expected.

Of course it is for this year because they kicked money down the road.  That was always going to happen because it had to. It certainly isn't cap friendly in a Tom Brady, leave money on the table type of way.

I think both sides of that are arguably correct. Rodgers went to the length of personally refuting the claim, when really the basic details of the contract weren't that far off. It's also fair to say that he did help their cap this year, which is really the most important part this week. Perhaps that's why he took issue initially- the thought that he was playing both sides. In the end, that's still kind of true, but he did help in 2022.

Being a contemporary of Tom Brady might be the worst thing to ever happen to Aaron Rodgers, simply because the comparisons are inevitable. I think we need to conclude that Tom Brady is very much his own animal (or robot/alien), and also married to a spouse that is worth more than him. Sure, I wish Rodgers would sign for $20 million every year, but I don't really fault him for not doing that.

Second round tender offered to Lazard.  Part of me hopes another team signs him, part of me wants him back.
