Biloxi sitting 24-28. That record says it all this season. It is time to turn this thing around, young men. You are on the doorstep. Let's start executing in those tight spots and let's tighten up that back-end. This can definitely be done and the tide can start turning in a better direction.

The only thing which could stop DSL Brewers2 from registering double-digit hits for the 4th straight game was having today's game cut short at 7 innings (8 hits).

Of course, I'm sure they would have preferred to score a few runs today. Something to work on tomorrow :)

High-A Wisconsin looks for a win to even their series in Beloit 2-2, with RHP Max Lazar hoping to replicate his last start (4 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 3 Ks). RF Arbert Cipion has hit safely in 9 of his last 10 games:

AA Biloxi also seeks a win tonight to knot up their series at home against the Smokies at 2 games apiece. RHP Carlos Luna (4.42 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 9.1 K/9 in 36 2/3 innings) makes his first start since May 6, though has been pitching in long relief regularly. SS Cam Devanney comes in with a 10-game on-base streak:

Carolina's RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez strives to continue his superb run (1.13 ERA, 0.71 WHIP, 13.1 K/9 over his last 24 innings), this time at home against 37-17 Myrtle Beach. LF Hedbert Perez looks to build on his 5-game hitting streak:

AAA Nashville has lost 7 of 8 games and will need RHP Caleb Boushley to put in another strong performance (14 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 6 Ks over last 2 starts) to turn things around. CF Jonathan Davis now has a 21-game on-base streak:

Here in the top of the fourth inning, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans' first hit is a two-run blast over the low wall in right field. The Mudcats now trail 2-1.

Carlos F. Rodriguez is losing a bit of his accuracy and control this inning as he's walked two. He had a hard time with this as well in the first inning. One down (a strikeout) he just walked a man aboard. He's looking quite frustrated on the hill.

He gets a very deep fly out to the CF wall (Jackson Chourio takes a wonderful angle to get there as the ball was roped) but then walks his third in the inning. Men are now up in the bullpen. And, just like that, he moves the runners over with a balk. This is the roughest patch I've seen from Rodriguez in some time. He can still get out of it with just the two-run blast.

Well, nevermind that. On the very next pitch, Carlos rips a pitch way outside as Sibrian was asking for and expecting high and middle. The ball goes to the backstop and it's now 3-1 Pelicans. Wooof.

A vintage 2022 Jakob Brustoski relief inning here in the 8th for the Mudcats:

Batter 1: Walk on 5 pitches
Batter 2: Strikeout on 4 pitches
Batter 3: Walk on 5 pitches
Batter 4: One ball, hit by pitch
Batter 5: Strikeout on 3 pitches
Batter 6: Full count, strikeout on 6 pitches

This one's for you, Jakob. Keep working!

Welcome back to "I am still an elite prospect in case you forgot..." Felix Valerio! Two homers on the evening, including a 3 run 2 out bomb in the 6th inning. Biloxi takes the precarious (given recent, um, tendencies) 11-10 lead here in the top of the 8th. Keep those fingers crossed, folks.

Caleb Boushley continues his recent string of fantastic starts. Six complete innings (so far) of no run, 3 K, 3 BB, 5 hit ball. Sounds look to end their recent losing streak and lead 7-0 after a four-spot here in the bottom of the sixth. It's on to the seventh as Weston Wilson just flew out to right field.

The T-Rats took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth in Beloit, but James Meeker was taken off the hill after giving up a run on a walk, single, and single. Joey Matulovich is given the unenviable task of inheriting two on with none down. He proceeds to walk a batter, gives up a sac fly, and just struck out the next batter for out number two. Tense moments as our High-A men look to tack another victory onto last night's. AND, we're on to extras. He gets the fly out to right field. Best of luck, Rattlers! Zavier Warren will start the 10th inning on 2nd base.

And now he has two homers a double and 8 RBI’s on the night. Arguably his best game as a professional. Biloxi absolutely pouring it on tonight offensively.

Strange to see them try to squeeze 3 innings out of Meeker. I assume starter Lazar exited earlier than expected (just 2 innings), given that no other long men were available. Miguel Guerrero must have also been oddly unavailable.

Mort and Meeker did a fabulous job covering 6 innings. Matulovich also had the tough task of completing the rest of the 9th inning on zero rest.

Too bad Meeker was forced to try to cover the 9th. Coulda shoulda woulda brought Baker in to start that inning, with Schanuel in reserve. Tough loss for the Wisconsin men.

For a place that traditionally hasn't yielded great offensive numbers, there are some pretty good stats being put up in Biloxi this year. Wiemer and Reetz have been the headliners, but Lutz, Diaz, Devanney, Valerio and Campbell all have an OPS of at least .780 as well, and Frelick is trending in the right direction. Now they just need to get Mitchell back and hitting like the rest have been.

Do not forget 'The Walk King', Thomas Dillard. Southern League Leader in that department. If he even gets remotely hot here in the next couple months that OPS will sky-rocket. As is, with his 0.206 BA he's still sitting at a 0.720 OPS. I believe, after tonight, that's 41 walks on the season (too lazy to look up and headed to bed?). Offensively, of late, we've even seen timely contributions from Yeison Coca and Terence Doston. If their pitching hadn't experienced such a downturn in recent weeks, they would have turned that corner toward above 0.500 respectability. Having Hasler and Vennarro back, in the very least, should help solidify those key later innings. They'll need that version of Brandon Knarr and a step from TJ Shook and a return to 2021 form for Noah Zavolas to settle that starting staff. Knarr was lights out in his debut. Anywho, there is plenty of reason for optimism. Hopefully, it pans out.

I have to give Devanney some props this year.  I was really down on him last year, thinking he would just be an organizational soldier.  But looking back at his stats, he had a very good start in rookie ball in 2019.  Then COVID happened and missed 2020 and then was pushed all the way to AA in 2021.  Totally justified that he would struggle.  But now he has nearly an 800 OPS playing SS.  In years past, he would be considered a top prospect.  I think he is not getting enough attention and with all the other talent at Biloxi, I can see how that would happen.  If he continues this trend though, he is going to be in my top 20 list.

Devanney featured in the “other prospects” section of Fangraphs’ list a couple of times as a middle infielder with some pop. Outside of the anti-3TO Gabe Holt and maybe Valerio, he has one of the team’s best strikeout rates so far as well. When the initial Biloxi roster came out, I thought he and Diaz were the offensive weak points. Wrong on that.

I’ve been touting Devanney, and I’m being serious, since the first series when he came on in place of the suddenly injured Ashton McGee. His defense and his arm was so consistently impactful. He played quite a bit of 3B earlier before the arrival of Coca (if memory serves). He had several stints with improved plate appearances but what we’re currently seeing might legitimately be a breakout moment for a young talented prospect.

It’s why I personally suggested Seth try and get an interview with Cam for his ‘Three Questions’ series. Keep giving those props @ClosetBrewerFan!
