I know the defense was horrible in this game……but the fact that they don’t think Small is a better choice then Alexander is certainly troubling.

Alexander just has no business starting for a playoff team…..his stuff just isn’t good enough.

Our starting pitching overall has been pretty bad…..other then Burnes….Woody his last 2 starts and Lauer in April and May.

Certainly one of the worst games of the season overall.

I was just thinking this about small.  If we won’t start him ahead of chi chi and George, there’s almost no way he’s a major piece in a trade and thus limits us greatly.  You just can’t give up two of weimer/Mitchell/frelick/chourio.  I don’t see us landing any substantial pieces at the deadline, sadly.

Mithcell?? What has he really done to make him untouchable? Dude is hurt all the time it appears and not hitting when he isn't.

Very interesting take. So my senior design was working on the LBE reactor which was actually bought by a firm I believe, so you are welcome UW-Madison. Fusion is a very necessary option. From sustainable fusion, we can likely achieve it now, to an extent. The thing holding back is the plasma boundary conditions, which was another project I had done last semester. If there were enough investment, sustainable fusion would be done significantly more soon.

I understand none of this, yet to me it still makes more sense than stats guys putting a lot of stock in WAR.

It's clear to me that we have too many AAAA guys playing too big of a role. Davis is hitting at Cain levels now after a hot start, but he's starting because we don't have another healthy CF. Alexander and Chi-Chi have done what you hope AAAA guys will do--eat some innings--but it's a problem going back to that well repeatedly.  Nothing wrong with cycling some AAAA guys through the major leagues when you have an acute need, but they should not stay on the team very long.

Dahl might have more upside on offense than Davis, because he actually was a successful major league hitter for a while.

And trade Severino, for God's sake. If we want a 3rd C in October, we have options in the minors.

If we want a third catcher in October it can’t be Severino anyway.

Severino has to be traded unless they really want him for next season.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Yes, he had more bad outings than just the one against the Cubs. But the Cubs one where he gave up 7 runs in 3 2/3 innings really set him back as far as his ERA. Meanwhile, his peripherals are: 2.96 xERA, 3.00 FIP, 3.00 xFIP. That's exactly where he was last year when he finished 5th in Cy Young balloting.

At some point results are important, and Woodruff’s results before his injury were not what a team expects and needs from an ace pitcher, both from the standpoint of preventing runs and covering innings to protect the bullpen.

In his first 8 starts he had only 2 quality starts, which IMHO are a pretty low standard for an ace pitcher. In several starts, he was taking 90 or more pitches just to get through 5 innings, even when he wasn’t giving up a lot of runs.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

season doesn't end until October 5, but I probably should have said "after rosters expand."

his peripherals show that Woodruff was pitching fine, just not getting the results that one would expect.

Ah, I thought you were referring to the playoffs.

That’s what I usually think of when people talk about baseball in October.
