I don't understand.  We value Jonathan Davis, Trevor Kelley, Jason Alexander and Peter Strzelecki on the 40 man more than Dinelson Lamet? Heck, Perdomo, Milner and Suter seem vulnerable too...

It’s not the 40 man it’s the 25 man

I think some people here need to take a break from this team. Lamet is not a long term fix on this team. Why he was included and then DFA'd. I don't know and I don't care. He is not a player in any long term plans or probably had very little short term plans. Just the bashing of Stearns on everything he does has just been a lot.

No, it's the 40 man.  However, McCalvy cleared it up with the service time explanation.

It seemed to be getting closer & closer to the time they had to let go of Severino, whether they liked it or not. Didn't expect it today though. Guess that bases-loaded K really cost him lol.

I'm seeing Hiura as a PH & occasional DH, don't know what else they can do with him. We'll see.

Did they screw up not knowing he had 5 years of service time? Otherwise why not just come out and say right away it was for financial reasons.

Whatever the case, the optics of this look terrible.

Lamet being DFA'd is a little surprising to me but not overly so. He always felt like a guy thrown into the deal to make the Financials work. He was almost assuredly going to be non tendered in the offseason. He wasn't going to make or break the Hader deal. Lamet wasn't the important part of the trade, Stearns called Gasser one of the best pitching prospects in baseball. This will come down to how Ruiz/Gasser develops and how Rogers pitches this year.

I suppose there's a place for the timing of the trade. As it was the first trade, the Front Office wasn't sure what the end of the deadline would look like, so they took Lamet. Then, when making other trades, they knew that Lamet would end up being a casualty after the trades.

I believe is that the explanation is that Stearns took on the player so SD avoided playing the luxury tax. Stearns is no idiot. He isn't going to acquire a player he really wans and 2 days later realize that he has no room for him.

If it was only about Ruiz and Gasser, it seems like this move could have been made in the offseason and we could have kept Hader for the rest of this season's run.  Oh well.  Hopefully Rogers is a stud.

It could be that they are perhaps extremely high on Ruiz and Gasser, and the Padres finally caved and offered the prospects the Brewers wanted. But then if that is the case, Ruiz should be in Pittsburgh and starting in CF tonight.

We either took him because we thought there was some value in him that we could extract (clearly not the case based on this) or we took him to even out the money going to the Padres (don’t cry poor anymore) and we should have been compensated for evening out the money.

It’s just a stupid, awful move in either case.
