I think Counsells' managerial ability has been curtailed by the 3-batter rule, and by the DH. He used to make a lot more moves because the rules allowed it. But I don't want to sound like an apologist for him, because he's had a questionable year at best. There are different ways to respond as a manager when things are going poorly. I don't know what this clubhouse is like personality-wise, but the way he's responded this year is neither effective nor what I personally prefer.

I hope my lasting image of him this year isn't the weird balk call in San Fran, where he responded by standing there like he was waiting for a bus.

Everyone needs to adjust to changes. There is absolutely no excuse for him to manage at the level he has this year. If he no longer has the ability to change, he needs to be replaced. It may sound harsh, and I don’t mean it literally, however, my biology teacher said evolve or become extinct.

Like I said I'm no apologist for the guy. I don't think he's done a nearly good enough job this year. The thing is, the rule changes have made it easier rather than harder to manage a baseball game. There's still moves to be made in a game but compared to years ago I feel the in-game job has really been dumbed-down. I feel it's taken some areas where he & his team had an edge & castrated those edges. But even more than in-game decisions, and believe me I've had many bones to pick with him this year, I think a lot of his failures come from the teams' mindset, the day-to-day preparedness. What they do on a given day to win, that day. They had their heads in the toilet for a full week after the trade deadline, and it's seemed to set a tone. That's the players' fault, but I think it's his as well.

Your biology teacher sounds like a smart guy?. But regarding in-game decisions I think in many ways the game has devolved rather than evolved.

The Brewers play in a division where 3 teams are not trying to win. If they don't make the playoffs it's an organizational failure and a housecleaning is in order.

With all the games against the other teams in the division 1/3 of our schedule is against Pittsburgh, Cincinatti , and the scrubs and we will be lucky to finish over .500 for the season.

Its probably time to trade Burnes and Woodruff in the offseason while they still have tremendous value. Its obvious by now that the team refuses to address the offensive shortcomings so its time for yet another rebuild.
