2022-2023 NFL Playoffs discussion

I've really enjoyed seeing the contributions of Isaiah Hodgins for the Giants.  I was pretty high on him in the 2020 draft, he was one of my 6th round options for the Pack.  Released by the Bills during the season, didn't play for the Giants until week 10 and ended up being their 3rd leading receiver in terms of yards.

And on that note... what the heck happened to Kenny Golladay?  Good thing the Packers didn't sign him as a FA.

And that's a terrible roughing the passer call

I hate it, but they call it all year long. Smacked him in the helmet with his hand. 9/10 that is called.

Yea that was a head scratcher.

Garbage call, but Cook helped set up that crummy situation. Before the two minute warning he caught it and instead of running upfield for 2-3 yards he went for the sideline. There was no reason to run out of bounds, but he instead did that for no gain.

Blows my mind they call that play knowing they can get tackled in bounds and the person getting the ball has no idea.

At least we don't have to watch the Pack get humiliated by the 49ers and it would have been an ass kicking.

I was at the Packers Lions game - but I was wearing my Niners cap.  I was getting chirped all game by Packer fans.  That's fine, I get it.  When the Packers lost some fan still was riding me.  I told him, you should be happy you don't have to watch the Packers get waxed by SF next week.  He didn't respond.

He could have the greatest coaching and talent around…what he has done is still impressive for a rookie that was essentially undrafted. Certainly, he benefits from being plopped into a golden situation with a ton of talent to help him out. You still gotta perform and makes plays.

I suppose the question becomes, how will he fair as teams get more film on him…and is he actually a pro bowl level QB or is he more like the guy he came in for. He certainly seems like a legitimate starter.

Purdy missed a few open receivers early and had a few really bad decision throws.  Was that first time playoff jitters? No idea, but he definitely looked better as the game went on.  Although, guys were running free all over the field.

enjoy that 1st place schedule next season  Vikings fans.

Yes, that schedule coupled with a defense in need of alot of roster turnover and an offseason spent figuring out how to pay Jefferson enough $ to keep him happy has the Vikings primed for a first to worst record in the division next season.

Everything (health, luck, schedule, etc) went right for them this year...lightning won't strike twice.

I know nobody has missed four straight.

A playoff team can cut a player during the playoffs and sign a street free agent, right?

If so, there are a bunch of kickers making sure Jerry Jones has their phone #.

Either that or go for two every time. Or Dallas just committing a taunting penalty after every touchdown so he can kick them from 48 instead.

I believe they said he’s missed 5 straight dating back to last week.

Brady looks terrible in the few minutes I’ve watched of this game.

Yeah, I think father time got annoyed Brady double crossed him and unretired last offseason.  He's done even if he tries to keep playing somewhere else next season.

So are 31 general managers blithering idiots or is Purdy the product of great coaching and talent around him?

Basically the same as Tom Brady.  And in actuality, 32 GMs passed on both multiple times.  Just one finall picked them late in the draft.  Some people just exceed what the scouting report will say.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the 49ers would be better off trading Purdy this offseason at peak value than expecting him to go on to have a two decades long career with multiple Super Bowl titles just because he was drafted late like the GOAT.

Tony Romo was an UFA.  Kurt Warner was bagging groceries.  Seems like quality starting quarterbacks can come from all sorts of spots, but let's not kid ourselves - the pedigree for a consistently great quarterback year in, year out is a player with physical gifts that teams draft in Round 1 and most often high in Round 1.  Sometimes guys like that fall a bit in years where QBs are overlooked or in QB-heavy draft years, or if they come out early and are development projects.

Purdy's strengths as a quarterback really fit with the 49ers offensive roster right now, because its scheme fits quick decision-making along with accurate short passes to skill position players running to open space, and he's playing behind a damn good offensive line.  Truth is that Purdy's physical limitations likely have him destined to have a very long career as a reliable backup QB at the NFL level - and if a team invests in him being a longterm starter they're going to regret it.  I think there's alot more Matt Flynn to his game than Tom Brady.

No where was I comparing the two except in that GMs passed on good players.  Warner and Romo were good examples also.

I was thinking Case Keenum as a more accurate QB comparison.  Flynn was a much smaller sample, but apt also.

I get what you meant, probably should've quoted an earlier post in this thread about Purdy because I wasn't responding directly to the point you were trying to make.  For as good as Purdy has looked since the rest of the 49er QB room went on IR, the 49ers are heavily invested in Trey Lance being their longterm quarterback.  It will be interesting this offseason what their front office chooses to do with Purdy - he's obviously got the bonafides to be an excellent backup for the next few seasons on a 7th round rookie contract, and at some point I bet they can convince a different NFL team desperate for a quarterback to trade for him.  I just don't see them shopping Lance this offseason based on what Purdy has done down the stretch - if they ride all the way to a Super Bowl title, then that could change.

I think the Cowboys are going to be a tough out for Purdy and company unless the 49er defense finds a way to dominate a pretty good Dallas offense next weekend.

So the Packers should pick up Purdy to backup whichever of Rodgers/Love remains? (Not sure if that is sarcasm or not...)

Actually, I'd expect the 49ers to dump Jimmy G and keep Lance/Purdy as their pair. That would make the most sense, IMO.

I'm pretty certain Jimmy G is a FA headed into 2023, so the 49ers wouldn't even need to dump him.  I expect the same in terms of keeping Lance/Purdy, with Lance remaining the starter.
