When has a thumb injury not bothered someone?

Trout had the same injury and surgery.  It took him some time to return to form after the injury.  I fully expect it to take the rest of the year for Frelick to be back where he was last year.  So I don’t see a call up likely for this year.

I think it pushed Frelick to Opening Day 2024. The Brewers should not make the mistake they made with Jimmy Nelson.

In 2019, they kept Nelson on the major-league roster, even when it was pretty clear that AAA was a better spot for him to ramp back up to pitching every five days because he'd missed all of 2018. Same logic applies to Frelick - keep him in Nashville to recover his form, and to see what is there.

Is this the same injury that pretty much took all Braun's power away?

I think a vitamin S deficiency had something to do with that.

Thumbs and wrists are unpredictable. I'm reluctant to say it's unlikely Frelick will be called up but it's certainly a possibility. Some guys bounce right back, others take time to get back to full speed.

Thumb injuries aren't as scary as wrist injuries but they're not good, either.

I have no clue why we're suddenly thinking that Frelick is done for the year. Mike Trout suffered this same injury while sliding into a base in 2017 and returned six weeks later and was just fine.

Frelick's not even a guy who's reliant on his power.

Frelick isn't or hasn't ever been on the 40 man roster, correct?  I don't see why or how this injury impacts his service time at all, as he should be allowed to recover/rehab and then resume playing in the minors awhile before seeing if his production warrants a MLB promotion in late summer/September.

his injury recovery basically sets Frelick back to the AS break timeframe before we'd see him playing minor league games - I think a September callup is actually aggressive at this point and it may not even be worth getting him on the 40 man to do so this season.

Here is the thing:

To even get a September call-up he would actually have to hit well. To start the year at AAA he was rocking a .232 average and a .639 OPS. So, we should probably pump the brakes until he earns a call-up to the bigs. Coming back from the injury he very well may start out slow just like he did to start the year and this entire debate will be pretty meaningless in the end. That being said, if he hits, I don't see any reason why he won't be promoted if there is a need.

It'll be worth it if he's hitting and we're in contention.

His performance in AAA this year was a huge SSA. He already earned it with his performance last year, a la Wiemer and Mitchell. Not that I think he should go right to the big league roster when he's healed from surgery, but a week or two of games with him showing no ill-effects, and I'm calling him up if Wiemer and/or Taylor are struggling/injured.
