All of the ACL players I'm expecting to move up were still in the ACL lineup today:

  • Rehabbing minor leaguer 1B/C Tayden Hall
  • Rehabbing minor leaguer OF Luis Castillo
  • 22-year old OF Reidy Mercado
  • Rehabbing major leaguer LHP Justin Wilson

That’s 3 wins on the day for our Rookie level clubs, the last being our Arizona Complex League team, which came back twice to beat the Royals 7-6.

Luis Castillo and Dylan O’Rae each reached base 4 times, while Juan Baez had a double and triple (key to three-run 8th inning rally). SS Baez is performing amazingly well after signing for just $10,000 (as a catcher!) last January.

In DSL-1’s 4-1 victory over Pirates Black, 3B Luiyun Alastre reached base 4 times, CF Yophery Rodriguez thrice and RF Pedro Tovar twice, scoring those 4 runs on just 4 hits (drawing 11 walks). Tovar also threw out a baserunner at home.

But the bigger story is probably starting LHP Anthony Flores going 5 innings strong, conceding 1 runs on 2 hits.

It was easier sailing for DSL-2 who were up 8-0 on Guardians Blue by the 5th inning, ultimately taking the game 8-4.

Starting RHP Bryan Rivera pitched 4 2/3 shutout innings (2 hits, 8 Ks), being wisely stopped after we pushed him to a disastrous 6th inning to tarnish his last outing.

DH/2B Pedro Ibarguen had 3 hits to lift his OPS to .871, C Eric Martinez 2 hits and a sac fly (OPS .894), LF Fabricio Valera 3 hits, 3B Luis Lameda 2 hits. CF Ramon Moreno (.831 OPS) and SS Filippo Di Turi (.866 OPS) each knocked in 2 runs.

Crazy that they announce two dozen kids as SS each year and the one who actually ends up playing there was announced as a catcher.

Yeah, the DSL positional assignations are quite often entirely different by the time the youngsters start playing.

It seems like it's been two weeks since all the rookie clubs won on the same day? Big wins for the DSL squads after some very tough luck of late. Personally, I'm just grateful they weren't playing the Dodgers.😁

Low-A Carolina aims for a 3rd straight win and series tie in Kinston, NC against Down East. Their youngest pitcher RHP Yujanyer Herrera (4.47 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 7.4 K/9 in 48.1 IP) gets the start. The hot bats of 18-year old CF Luis Lara and 24-year old DH/C Jose Sibrian are slotted 3rd and 4th.

20-year old 3B Eduardo Garcia (left Friday’s game early) returns to action for High-A Wisconsin, who can win their series in Quad Cities with a victory today. RHP Cameron Wagoner (6.96 ERA, 1.66 WHIP, 7.0 K/9 in 54.1 IP) is the starter, while SS Robert Moore is humming along with a 20-game on-base streak.

AA Biloxi needs a home win over Mississippi to forge a 3-3 series tie. RHP TJ Shook (5.40 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 11.3 K/9 in 36.2 IP) makes his 3rd start (13th appearance). C Jeferson Quero has a 6-game hitting streak and 13-game on-base streak.

RHP Caleb Boushley takes the hill for AAA Nashville, looking to polish off a 5-1 series victory in Memphis. C Alex Jackson had a ridiculous 1.476 OPS in 55 June PAs and recently-optioned 3B Luis Urias makes his first non-rehab appearance in the minors since July 2019.

Now.

THIS is the game we've been waiting for from the talented RHP TJ Shook. Have. A. Game. Young man!

5 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 10 K. 73 pitches.

Will they let him paint his masterpiece into the 6th? He's teased this potential all year he just had yet to put it together in a single outing. You have to love it!

INF Tyler Black says: You think I can't play 3B? Makes a beautiful running stab and spinning carousel throw to 1B to grab the first out in the 6th.

Book it. 6 shutout innings for the Shookster. He retires the last 10 he faces (likely his night is done). And, sets a career high 11 K in the process. He gets the swinging foul tip and Quero adroitly holds on to help his hurler. Great stuff!

TJ Shook twirls an absolute gem. 6 innings of 1 hit baseball with 11 strikeouts and Russell Smith immediately comes in and throws the lead away with 4 runs in 1 inning with 2 HR against.

Incredibly painful watching Russell Smith get absolutely rocked every outing in AA while Andrew Abbot who was drafted 2 picks after him is twirling gem after gem in the MLB for a division rival.

Carolina might only have four hits so far, but two of them are courtesy of Luis Lara (2-3, 2B), so there’s that.

Chase Costello has also thrown 3.2 scoreless/hitless relief innings (3 BB | 1 K) as the Mudcats trail 3-0 after seven.

Caleb Boushley dealing so far at 7 IP | 1 ER | 4 H | 0 BB | 7 K.

Sounds currently up 6-1 after seven with Urias (2-4), VanMeter (0-2, 2xBB), Bolt (3-4, 2x2B), Jackson (2-4, 2B), Devanney (1-4, 2B) and Reed (1-2, BB, SB) all reaching twice or extra base hitting.

And 2 more runs in Smith's 2nd inning. 2 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 2 HBP, 2 HR...his AA ERA is sitting at 9.72

I'm not going to lie. I knew Smith was in the bullpen in the 6th frame. I walked away and ate dinner with the family knowing full well this was a distinct possibility. Shooks outing does not go for naught, however, as this was a huge outing for the young man regardless of Smith's ongoing struggles.
