No, it will be because Woody is it out for the year, their elite manager is coaching their rival and they know Burnes is gone next offseason. Its going to be hard to make one last run in 2024 now. Got to be realistic.

Tbf, it's not like we had Woody for a most of the season this year in which we won the division by 9 games...

That said, I would be shocked if we didn't sell of some pieces.

There is not a chance in hell that the Cardinals aren't going to be better, a lot better in '24.

The Cubs are going to be active on the FA market, they aren't going to sign their golden boy manager and not give him some shiny new toys to manage.

If the Reds add some pitching, or get their current staff healthy, they are going to have to be dealt with too.

The Division will not be as weak in '24 as it was in '23, it just isn't going to be that easy.

Because we won the division by 9 games last year means absolutely nothing in '24, especially when considering what I have just outlined above.

I disagree it means "absolutely nothing". What it means is those teams have some catchup to do, whether by virtue of internal improvement or external additions.

I don't believe I ever indicated the division is going to be easy. Simply that Woodruff being out for most if not all of the season isn't exactly much of a net change from this past season.

You were insinuating that winning the division, even without Woody shouldn't be that difficult in '24.  What you were not taking into account was that the other teams will surely be better.

Those teams that have some "catch-up" to do are going to make every attempt to do so, and all we have is talk of trading off anyone and everyone, a different manager (who we know nothing about yet), and a million holes to fill in our rotation once Burnes is moved.

You can continue to tow the company line, but winning the division in '24 with all the turmoil this team is in, is going to be a complete magic show.

Yeah I said and/or insinuated none of this but go on.

Woody missed 80% of last year. And another season of Burnes will net a top 35 pick and the pool money that comes with it, which is extremely valuable considering this teams prospect procurement systems. Not having Counsell shouldn’t affect the direction the team takes.

This team can contend next year and they don’t need Counsell & Woody to do it.

It will be interesting to see if a good market emerges for Burnes.

The big advantage that trades have over FAs is that a trade guarantees that you get that player; the second advantage is at least a year of exclusive negotiation over a contract extension.  There's competition for free agents and you don't know if you have the best offer.
