DFAd by Cleveland yesterday... I definitely wouldnt mind taking a flier on him for the back of our rotation.

He was a good starter before, get him in the lab and see what magic we can get back.

He was a top of the rotation starter in 21 and 22. I would think at absolute worst he could be like Bryse Wilson and be a quality long man with his stuff playing up a but in the bullpen. Would we take over his contol and have to pay arbitration or is he eligible for free agency? 2/12 with some solid incentives seems relatively fair.

Top of the rotation if you only look at ERA. His peripherals all suggested a 4+ ERA guy. Basically what Lauer was for the Brewers pre 2023.

Yeah. 68 ERA- in 2021, but with a 96 FIP-. Regressed to an 89 ERA- and 106 FIP- in 2022. Bottomed out at 125 ERA- and 114 FIP- in 2023.

He is only one data point of many, but serves as a pretty good example to illustrate how FIP does a better job of predicting ERA than ERA does.

Out of 137 pitchers with at least 250 IP since 2021 he has actually been pretty good at limiting HRs (85 HR9+ | 36th) and decent at limiting walks (85 BB9+ | 64th), but abhorrent when it comes to striking guys out (74 K%+ | 128th).

I believe Cal is a serviceable pitcher but it begs the questions of how much is that “service” worth & what other options are available.

With the Bally’s cable deal falling apart, multiple teams are looking for ways to close a shortfall of $50 to $100M in revenues,

Cal has a projected Arbitration contract of ALMOST $7M for next season.  That is a lot for a mid/ lower end rotation piece. In the CLE case, Cal is currently the 6th or 7th starter with Bieber/ McKensie & the 3 kids from this year (Bibee, Williams & LT Allen) all ahead of him..

Perhaps MKE feels Cal could help the rotation with other pieces gone/ out/ going but it might make more sense as a free agent signing instead of s trade during the dfa period.

I see my post from Thurs nite never went thru..

Oh well.

CLE got C Kody Huff (son of Aubrey).  Either CLE preferred Kody or MKE felt Cal was better as a FA target then a trade target.
