Wonder what it would cost to sign him?

Had a really nice comeback season last year before missing the last month of the season.

Meh, I realize we aren't going to be signing anyone that other teams would want, but I'm pretty curious, and he'd slot nicely into our #2 after Burnes is gone.

I'd love to sign Paxton. I like the idea of short-term guys that have had star-power in the past. I just mentioned in the other thread that I'd like Tim Anderson for the same reason.

What do we think it's going to take to sign Paxton?  With his recent injury history, I can't imagine a team is going to give him more than a 1-year deal, right?  While I'd love to take a flyer on someone like Paxton, I'm guessing a team that is more desperate (with deeper pockets) is going to offer him more $$ than what we'd be willing to risk on a guy like this.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Orioles have expressed interest in free agent southpaw James Paxton.
The 35-year-old hurler made 19 starts for the Red Sox in 2023 — going 7-5 with a 4.50 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 101/33 K/BB ratio across 96 innings of work. The Red Sox have also expressed interest in bringing Paxton back, but overall his market has been fairly quiet this winter.

I am fine with Paxton, my guess is he gets 10-12 million for a year. I would rather get a 1 year bat like Belt for a few million more (or Turner/Martinez/Hoskins for 5-10 more).

If we bring in a starter at this point my guess is it would be someone like Spencer Turnbull on a cheaper deal. If we trade Burnes/Adames I could see us using that money on a FA pitcher.

I like Paxton, and I think he would help, but durability is such a major concern with him, and the Brewers rotation already has plenty of players with that very same concern.

If Mikwaukee is going after any starters, I guess I would rather they target players who have a better track record of staying healthy.

Deal was for one year, 11 million with a 1 million bonus if he makes the opening day roster.

We couldn't do 12 million?

*sigh*

Glad we got Hoskins at least.

1.) He may have preferred the Dodgers and it may have taken more than $12M for the Brewers to get him.

2.) I'm not sure $12M is a super safe investment for a team like the Brewers to spend on a 35 year old pitcher that has only been able to compile 25 starts and 1.3 fWAR over the past 4 years combined.

I do feel like our rotation is a little thin without Woodruff and would like a guy like Paxton if he had been added (for instance I wouldn't mind them picking up Ryu if he came at the right price), but I can't fault them for not going that high on him specifically.

UPDATED:

Too bad we couldn't have given him 8 million and the incentive package...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

James Paxton’s contract with the Dodgers guarantees him $7 million, not $11 million as previously reported.
Paxton will get a bonus for being on the active roster on Opening Day, and further bonuses start kicking in once he makes his sixth regular-season start. He will max out at $13 million if he makes 20 starts or if he’s on the active roster on Opening Day and makes 18 starts.

Pretty sure they could have swung that. Either they showed interest and it wasn't reciprocated, or they figured that it wasn't worth the risk, even at that relatively bargain price.

Yeah I don’t know about that. I think they’ve had a pretty good offseason being able to address the team’s biggest weakness by signing Hoskins. The bullpen is still really good. I like our lineup even with the young, unproven guys in there. They could probably use another veteran starting pitcher but other than that, I’m pretty happy.
