26-year old RHP Evan McKendry (4.30 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 8.2 K/9 in 142.1 IP last season) starts Game 2 of Nashville's 3-game series in Toledo. In the field, the team sends out the same 9 position players as played most of yesterday's Opening Day loss, including LF Brewer Hicklen who reached base 3 times.

Sounds fall 4-2 for the second day in a row.

Tyler Black (2-5, 3B), Vinny Capra (1-4, BB), Owen Miller (1-4, 2B, BB), and Patrick Dorrian (2-4, 2B) all reached twice while Wiemer chipped in an RBI double.

Harold Chirino (1.1 IP | 1 H | 3 BB) and Enoli Paredes (1 IP | 1 K) had scoreless outings.

Small Sample Alert:

In first 2 games the Sounds are 2-for-23 with RISP. 20 men LOB. 25 K as a collective unit 😵‍💫. Today, they outhit the Mud Hens 9-to-6. Early season rust in full patina, absolutely. The Pitching has been just fine.

I don't anticipate this level of futility will become the norm but I have to call a spade when I see one: I just don't particularly like the offensive lineup construction at present. There are several things I could expound on here but let me focus on a simple one:

I continue to disapprove and lack comprehensive understanding of Wes Clarke back in Double-A. The young man is a danger with a stick in his hands - he can drive in runs. I (absolutely my opinion) don't see Joey Wiemer as a cleanup hitter at present. I understand the thinking behind it but, again to me, this is wishful thinking given the major swing overhaul. Wes Clarke? I know he produces runs. AND, maybe I am drunken to add more K's to the 25 we've already seen? Hard to tell.😅

Anyhow...Sweetie and staff will figure it out and they'll work with the hand they are dealt. In the early going of 2024, I have personal contentions with roster constructions and player placements. Shocker. None of what I say here is emotionally charged in any way or has any ounce of finger wagging. It's a long season and many many changes will occur at every level. But, I do know in the long view of my time following of the Brewers Minor Leagues: when I see something or have an intuition on players or rosters they tend to be fairly accurate.

Let's get them tomorrow.

Chirino had 3 BB not 3 K

Whoops, good catch. Paints his appearance in a different light for sure.

Downgraded from “dominant” to “effectively wild” in the mental filing cabinet.

If the MILB pitch readings are correct, McKendry struggled with his cutter (HR, 2B, several balls, no whiffs), but was otherwise effective with his fastball (3 whiffs), sweeper (4 whiffs) and a lot of changeups (9 whiffs - many by Keston). There were also some sinkers mixed in.

Even though his K rate is scary high, I agree re Clarke. I see little argument for him staying in AA & would've bet the house he'd be placed in Nashville.

Looking at the roster, the entire infield at Biloxi is loaded; I'd describe it as overloaded.
