Brewers Minor League Link Report (4/27): Misiorowski, Holobetz and Alastre Shine in Sunday Action

Jacob Misiorowski threw shutout ball, but Nashville lost it in the 9th. John Holobetz and Luiyin Alastre led Carolina to the sole Sunday victory. Biloxi and Wisconsin weren’t able to keep their games close.

For the week, Biloxi (4-2) was the sole series winner, though Nashville (3-3) and Wisconsin (3-3) managed to split their respective series. Carolina ended up on the short end (2-4) despite winning the final two games.

A sterling start from 23-year old RHP Jacob Misiorowski (5 IP, 0 R, 3 singles, 0 BB, 9 Ks) and solid relief efforts was the story of this game until things fell apart with 2 outs in the top of the 9th inning.

Starting on four days’ rest, Misiorowski was highly efficient (67 pitches, 48 strikes), touching 99.9mph on the radar gun early and facing only one 3-ball count, even while trying to work in a few curve balls and changeups.

Not to detract from all the plaudits (well, I guess I am), but the Bulls did hit four >100mph balls off of Le Mis, including a 107.3mph single and 107.5mph ground ball double play in the 4th inning. Jacob exited with a 1-0 lead after 1B Wes Clarke (3-for-4) doubled and scored on a 2-out single from 2B Freddy Zamora (1-for-3, walk) in the 2nd inning.

Brewers’ 40-man roster relievers RHP Elvis Peguero and LHP Bryan Hudson were no slouches either, retiring all 6 batters they faced, 2 via strikeout. The Nashville staff totalled 14 Ks in the game.

In fact, through 8 2/3 innings, only 6 Durham Bulls had reached base (4 singles, 1 BB, 1 HBP) before RHP Sam McWilliams allowed a walk and back-to-back doubles to the disappointment of 8,544 home fans.

Sounds’ Extras:

• Apart from Clarke and Zamora, the only other Sounds to reach base via hit or walk were SS Andruw Monasterio (a single) and OF Jimmy Herron (also a single).

Next week’s outlook: Nashville will take a 4-hour road trip southeast to take on Braves’ affiliate Gwinnett for six games, commencing on Tuesday.

The biggest positive here likely came before the game, as SS Cooper Pratt’s x-ray on his finger (he’d exited early on Saturday) came back negative:

As to the game, LHP Tate Kuehner (3 1/3 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 4 BB, 4 Ks) was also making his second start of the week, working through heavy traffic before handing over to RHP Bo Bowman trailing 2-0 with 2-on, 1-out in the 4th inning.

Bowman did well to strand those two baserunners, but then went BB-BB-triple-homer to the first 4 batters of the 5th inning as the Biscuits opened up a sizeable 6-0 advantage.

The Shuckers only managed 4 hits on the afternoon, but three of those are captured in their Twitter feed as they went for extra bases to cut the deficit to 6-3 by the 8th inning, the last a OF Garrett Spain 1-out RBI triple. Unfortunately, a final Montgomery pitching change shut the door from there (5-up, 5-down last 5 Shuckers).

Shuckers’ Extras:

• Per the linked game report, RHPs Stiven Cruz and Nick Merkel combined on 4 scoreless relief innings, while Justin Yeager added a 5th for good measure. Together, they retired 15 of 16 batters faced (striking out 4), allowing only a single.
• The 23-year old Cruz has apparently reverted to his 2022 form (a good thing), disavowing walks, as he now has 11 strikeouts and zero walks in 10 2/3 innings in 2025.
• SS Ethan Murray and OF Bladimir Restituyo hit 8th and 9th in the order, but combined to reach base 4 times, including their back-to-back dingers highlighted in the Twitter feed. Meanwhile, the 2 through 7 batters combined on an 0-for-20 day.

Next week’s outlook: The Shuckers face a 4.5-hour drive northeast to battle Braves’ affiliate Columbus, with their series also starting on Tuesday.

Despite the scary final score, 19-year old starting RHP Manuel Rodriguez continued to shine (4 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks), exiting after 4 innings with the game tied 1-1. However, throwing on 4 days’ rest, he was limited to 54 pitches (38 strikes).

From there, things obviously got concerning, starting with 21-year old RHP Dikember Sanchez’s 5th difficult relief appearance in 6 tries. After allowing 3 runs and 3 walks in this game, he’s now sporting a 4 K / 13 BB ratio through 5 2/3 innings of 2025 work.

The pain continued (literally) with INF/OF Eduardo Garcia exiting after an 8th inning hit-by-pitch on his leg. Let’s hope this was largely a precautionary move with the club trailing 5-1 at that point. Garcia had just returned to action after departing Friday’s game early.

Timber Rattlers’ Extras:

• While DH/1B Blake Burke collected a double and single to lift his season average to .275 (OPS .772), the rest of the lineup went 2-for-28 with 2 single, 2 walks and the painful HBP.
• C Eric Martinez (0-for-4, 3 Ks; 0-for-3 attempting to catch base stealers) made his first start at any level since July 2024 with the ACL Brewers, giving you an idea of the team’s position player depth at present.
• Aside from Rodriguez, RHP Bayden Root had the other satisfactory pitching line: 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K.

Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin returns home to taken on Tigers’ affiliate West Michigan, with RHP Ryan Birchard (3.55 ERA, 14 Ks in 12 2/3 IP) scheduled to start the opening game on Tuesday.

22-year old starting RHP John Holobetz and 19-year old INF/OF Luiyin Alastre continue to stand out as early season pleasant surprises, teaming up to carry the Mudcats to a comfortable Sunday victory.

A 2024 fifth round pick, Holobetz (season ERA 2.89, with 26 Ks and 3 walks in 18 2/3 IP) allowed only 2 singles and a hit-by-pitch over 5 1/3 innings. One could even debate whether the one run allowed should be considered “earned”, as it was aided by a catcher interference (officially an error on C Marco Dinges).

Every Mudcat reached base via hit or walk, with 2B Filippo Di Turi (1-for-4, walk, RBI) collecting the team’s first knock before Alastre (2-for-4, 2 RBIs) bashed his first home run of 2025 for a 2-0 second inning advantage.

Loading the bases with nobody out in the 3rd inning (a Jesus Made single and 2 walks) led to more good things, with runs scoring via wild pitch, sacrifice fly and ground out for a 5-0 lead.

Mudcats’ Extras:

• Credit RHPs Miles Langhorne, Jesus Flores and LHP Anfernny Reyes with 2 2/3 scoreless relief innings, including Langhorne stranding a baserunner inherited from Holobetz.
• RHP Garrett Hodges’ 9th inning didn’t go as smoothly as he might have liked (K, double, RBI single), but a lineout double play to Di Turi sent the team back to Zebulon, North Carolina on a happy note.

Next week’s outlook: These impressive ballers return home to face Cubs’ affiliate Myrtle Beach for a 6-game set commencing on Tuesday.

Is this a thing now - didn't the Sounds/Shuckers just play the Rays AAA/AA the same time, and the week prior it was the ChiSox AAA/AA teams as well if I recall correctly?

Misi with a changeup is straight up tantalizing, I don't want to say it but if he can control the ball like he has the past two starts there is some Paul Skenes type stuff if he has legitimately found a changeup and control. I really think we are 1 more start like this away from him forcing his way into the big league rotation. My only concern is that they only let him throw 67 pitches, I feel like he was at more earlier in the year. Maybe just trying to save his arm for the long season? 

It is nice to see Blake Burke hitting the ball, hopefully the power starts to kick in as it gets warmer in Appleton, I had some hopes that he could move quick this year so at some point next year he could possibly be ready for the bigs.

Haven’t really dug into the numbers to confirm, but anecdotally it seems like when guys have two start weeks like Misio did this week that they limit their IP/pitch count a bit with only four days between starts instead of the preferred five days rest.
