A Misrepresentation in the Uecker Memorial Video Package?

Posted

OK, I may get flamed for this one.

During the Uecker Tribute on Sunday, clips were played of his famous radio calls.  One clip was the final out in '82 against the Angels.  I could swear to my dying day that Loren Brown worked the radio in the ninth and Uecker was in the clubhouse working for ABC.  Please tell me this isn't a case of history revisionism.  If so, I will be very disappointed.

Here is the radio call per MLB.

So that substantiates Jimbo's comment? Not Uecker?

Edit: FWIW, I also had heard the same story behind the call as Jimbo.

"I was flicking through the channels on the TV, on a Sunday in Milwaukee in the rain,
Trying to piece together conversations ... Trying to find out where to lay the blame"

I am not sure I was too young to remember anyone but Ueck calling the Brewers games.  So I am not sure if it is or isn’t Ueck on the call.  It doesn’t sound like him.

You’re not alone.  I have always thought the same thing.  Absolutely NONE of that video sounds like Uecker.  None.

yes, I seem to remember Ueck being down in the clubhouse, too.

I always thought it was Dwayne Mosley, and the presence of that clip above on the Wisconsin Broadcasting Museum's website suggests exactly that.

Based on the lone comment to that entry, Dan Markus agreed with me in 2023.

Whoever said it, "Milwaukee! You have a World Series!" was such a perfect way to put it. 🥲

ETA: Also "ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!" 🥲🥲🥲

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Hawing is correct.  My photographic memory isn't always spot on.

Lorn Brown was Uecker's partner in '80 and '81.  Mosley in '82 and '83.  I thought they both were "meh".

WISN had the radio rights in '81 and '82.

Background: I was in attendance at the game.  I didn't have privy to the calls until after the fact.  Then I heard it was Mosley who did the ninth and it always stuck with me all these years why Ueck wasn't doing the ninth.  It wasn't until the film came out last fall that I see extensive coverage of the locker room and Ueck was there for television, therefore unavailable for radio.  So that is why seeing that clip on Sunday caught me by surprise.

It is Mosley's voice in the posted video.

My fears are confirmed.  Disappointed the Brewers would do this.  Also, pretty disrespectful to Dwayne Mosely.

I have pointed out this thread to the “Just A Bit Outside” producers, who were asked to put together the memorial video packages, and otherwise did a spectacular job.

Guessing they may have been under the impression that was Uecker on that call.

Personally over the years I always thought the tone of that highlight call was Bob, but that some sort of technical audio issue altered his voice just a bit. Silly assumption.

Completely learned something here.

Via the JABO folks:

“We were aware the ACLS clinch call wasn’t Ueck’s call (we actually learned that in the process of making the documentary) and never represented that way in the film…we didn’t ID announcers as there were a lot of them throughout the course of the movie, and we occasionally cut back and forth between local and national calls; obviously there were a good amount of Dwayne Mosley calls.

Not sure if the ALCS clinch call was used in Ueck’s celebration of life videos shown on FanDuel, but we didn’t create those. We did the in-stadium videos and that call was NOT included in our material. (They did use some of our material for what was shown on air, but we had no editorial control over that.)

Hope that helps.”

So long story short, there was no disrespect shown by the JABO team, and as far as what was seen on FanDuel, it probably was an unintentional oversight by others.

Regardless, in deference to Ueck and to all, and to limit this getting any additional traction, closing the thread. But the insights within were appreciated and interesting. Thanks for understanding.
