Brewers-Cubs NLDS Game Five Thread - 10/11/2025 @ 7:08PM - For those Assuming a WIN!

Posted

Alright my final thoughts.

On this day in 2011, I was 25 and basically curled up in a ball all day. I'd like to think I've gained more perspective since then. I'm still anxious, though. Even if I have made peace with losing and do genuinely understand the minimal impact this game will have on my life in two weeks, let alone a year.

Her's what I feel good about:

I saw a woodpecker again today, coming out of a work thing. First time since morning of Game 2. If you count the Cardinal I saw first time I looked out my window before Game 6 in 2011, ornithomancy has never let me down.

Plus, the kid's magic 8 ball (non-Ueck variety, unfortunately) predicted a Brewers win with a straightforward "yes".

I also think Yelich is going yard today. It's time for a truly huge postseason hit from him.

I feel bad about the fact that I think we will have to get (extra) base hits to win. The Cubs are more likely to walk, I think, and we can lose the game that way. For us, it's gotta be hits.

Overall, I don't have a good gut feeling, but my guts have crap for brains.

Let's play well and get lucky.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

I hope people are right about Yelich, but I guess I don’t know why anyone expects something big from him in a big moment just because he’s been here the most.

With all respect intended for Yelich, he’s never exactly been Mr. October. Not bad, just nothing exceptional. Less power, more OBP, small sample size, of course.

Smaller sample size, but Jackson Chourio has been the guy you want at the plate in October.

I’m not sure why but I have a good feeling about tonight, but I also had a good feeling going into game 7 against the Dodgers so who knows. I would love nothing more than a leadoff HR by Jackson tonight to get things going.. I think Vaughn comes up big tonight. My son is still saying Bauers (not sure why he likes him so much, I didn’t even think he would be on the team this season). Let’s Go Brewers!  Brewers win 4-3!

So with Pomeranz starting, do we load up on righties in the lineup early on?

Would it be absolutely crazy to start Mona, put him in the 2 hole between Chourio and Contreras, bat Vaughn cleanup and then switch Mona out for Ortiz maybe after his 2nd AB? Maybe even a double switch later to move Ortiz’ spot all the way down the order?

Do we really want to waste the first ABs of Yelich and Turang against a reliever that obliterates lefties?

Lot to consider here.

I like this lineup:

  1. Jackson Chourio (R) LF
  2. Brice Turang (L) 2B
  3. William Contreras (R) C
  4. Christian Yelich (L) DH
  5. Andrew Vaughn (R) 1B
  6. Sal Frelick (L) RF
  7. Caleb Durbin (R) 3B
  8. Blake Perkins (S) CF
  9. Joey Ortiz (R) SS

I like it for the regular season. I don’t think that’s going to put up a threat in the 1st against Pomeranz.

The only thing I would switch up then is maybe a Turang flipflop with someone since he has been cold.

It tracks with the message from the owner, the organizational philosophy and the majority of the fan base.  Just be good during he season and whatever happens in the playoffs, happens.

Get pomeranz out of the way early, love it.  Rather see him in the first than in the 6th or 7th

Yeah, I wouldn't have Turang that high right now.  I'd actually put Yeli there... he hasn't been hitting great, but he can get on base against lefties.  Then put Vaughn 4th to force a LHP swap with our colder lefties (Frelick/Turang) coming after in a Frelick-Durbin-Turang order

I actually like this top 4 a lot..

If you DO load up on RHH in the opening inning (I don't think they will), IMO one of them needs to be someone you can swap in a LHH for otherwise it's somewhat of an advantage for them when they go with a RHP in the middle/late innings. That would probably mean something like Monasterio, then Turang subbing in. You could just bite the Pomeranz bullet & hit Frelick 2nd after Chourio, then probably Contreras. But I suspect Yelich will hit 2nd.

About a 97-win season being 'meaningless' if they don't advance---I suppose that's the residual effect of the evolution (deterioration?) of sports with the advent of multiple rounds of playoffs. Given the money to be made it was inevitable. But by its' very nature & by the length of the season, baseball is the best game for which the regular season should carry the most weight. Byes & home field help to some extent, but IMO it goes against the essence of the game to have twelve teams make the postseason.

Of course it won't change back. And of course I'm making myself sound like a 93-yr-old. But here we are--a 97 win season would be meaningless to some with a loss today. I just think that's unfortunate.

You just KNEW there was going to be something surprising personnel-wise, where you could turn the roster inside-out, consider every possible idea, then something still happens that you didn't expect (at least I didn't). It makes sense as long as he throws strikes. You now have 3 LHPs available for later, and Uribe can certainly go more than one inning if needed.

Either Patrick or Miz held back in case of extras?

Yeah I wouldn’t bat Turang inside the top 5. I think you can make a case for him at 9 if Mona starts for Ortiz.

I can understand how you could still make the case for Yelich at #3,
