In 2024 the Cubs were at +10.5 BSR (5th) overall on the bases and were +4.9 wSB (6th) on stolen bases specifically.

In 2025 the Cubs were at +11.0 BSR (3rd) overall on the bases and were +8.4 wSB (3rd) on stolen bases specifically so looks like Quintin helped them pick up a few extra runs stealing bags.

Do wonder how much of the Brewers decrease in running last year was injury or health related. Started off the year with +11.1 BSR (1st) and 80 SB / 17 CS (+5.4 wSB | 3rd) through May.

From June onward it was at +4.0 BSR (5th) with 84 SB / 36 CS (-4.8 wSB | 30th) so they were still doing pretty good going first to third, second to home, et cetera but their stolen base efficiency completely bottomed out.

When I see something like this it definitely makes me wonder if some of Berry’s teachings lagged over into the 2025 season and as teams started to adjust the Brewers just didn’t have an answer.

Having watched Erickson in Appleton for years, I have only one comment about his 3B coaching tendancies:

Conservative

Definitely wasn't a risk taker...

From the Athletic:

"The Milwaukee Brewers got off to a head start on the trend of college coaches jumping to the major leagues when they hired Spencer Allen as a field coordinator ahead of the 2022 season. Allen, who spent the prior six seasons as Northwestern’s head coach, then became the Brewers’ director of player development, a position he held the last two years.

In a move that received high marks around the industry on Monday, Milwaukee announced Allen’s promotion to the major-league staff as first base coach.

Allen, 48, is widely regarded as a candidate for a managerial job or bench coach spot down the road. Other clubs held interest in hiring Allen away from the Brewers, league sources said. His calling cards as a coach are base running and defense."

I had the same read on him. I guess my "let's wait and see' stance now is that him being the head coach and calling shots for the ~youngest of an organization's prospects (caretaker) might vary drastically from taking orders from Murphy? I could be very wrong about that.

Maybe directions from above to not risk any injuries?....   But if anything the kids are rubber bands at that age, and that shouldn't have been an issue.

Not coaching staff but I’ll put it here

Very interesting. Becoming a loaded front office :)

I’ve long assumed Doug Melvin’s position was mostly an honorific or sinecure, but they do already have former GM Matt Klentak in that role. Add that to 3 assistant GMs, that’s pretty impressive.

Only an organization like the Brewers could do that without the threat of egos constantly getting in the way.

It's almost certainly not this way but I kind of imagine a bunch of former GM's sitting around a poker table and talking baseball. Like a low pressure step back but still getting to be a part of things and flex those baseball knowledge muscles.

It’s gotta be that way at least once a month, on poker night! Hopefully held in Doug Melvin’s basement, where the whiskey would be flowing generously, “and that”.

Can't comment on how well he will do but as a Fox Valley born and raised... seeing Erickson everyday on the field will be a small pride thing.

The son of my sister's neighbors is really good friends with Erickson.

Fun fact - Matt's only hit in the majors was off of Greg Maddux when Maddux was on the Cubs.

He asked Maddux if he would sign the ball, and Greg obliged.  And wrote on it,

"Nice hit, f*** face".

Question about staff -

Does anyone know if joltin Jace Peterson is still going to be in his “unofficial” partime dugout role? I think he just joins the team as a coach at home segments of the schedule? I remember players saying they really like having him around.

I know he’s a consultant or advisor for the organization but I’m referring more to this specific role.

Thanks
