As putrid as Sproat has been, a couple things I am bummed about -

This ump has been equally as bad.

Really don’t think it’s a good idea to have Quero start his first game with an equally big start for Sproat.

The Sanchize dropped a pick off at first that would have been an out.

Perk inexplicably had his worst jump of his career and let a pop fly drop.

All this to say, aside from the double play, Sproat got zero help from anybody.

That doesnt even include Frelick trying to rob a warning track flyball and having it bounce out of the park to get out of the 2nd with zero runs scored instead of two

I love to watch Brewers baseball

I hate to watch bad baseball

Those are usually not present on the same day

Unfortunately, today is one of those rare days

There had to have been better options available to replace Vaughn than Quero.

That transaction seemed odd initially & today’s game has validated my concerns.

It's Quero or Black.  And Quero allows for RH stacking. Not sure I would go that way but there is logic to it.

Sproat looks awful

The difference between great and awful when you hit 98 on the gun isnt very much.  Command and pitch selection plus subpar outfield defense all killing him today.

Sproat's secondary stuff needs something that doesnt stay on plane and break in on lefties.  Even his change looked like a lazy cutter today instead of dying down and away.  And he needs to be able to hit the right parts of the zone with it.

How many times in the early months of the season have we heard people on this bulletin board calling for the team to get rid of Freddy, Yelich, Abner, etc. when they had rough starts?

It's a long season.

This lineup - especially with Sproat as the starter - doesn’t feel like a Murphy “win today” lineup. Today’s game is 180 degrees opposite the first two games. We look like the White Sox today. Uninspired baseball through three innings.

IMHO, we shouldn't use the ABS challenge unless it's a potential game scoring or otherwise critical moment in the game.

Honestly it’s just dumb

Thus, Sproat looks awful

Absolutely. Three games into the season and the challenges are being used way too liberally, and it's making the umpires look good when they've been bad for seven years or so. Sort of an "I told you so." that they don't deserve.

You never know in baseball when a moment will turn into that.

I agree that you need to take the situation into account, but the “borderlineness” of a call should be taken into account, too. If it’s an egregiously bad call that you know you’re going to win, I am fine with challenging it regardless of situation. I think we know those when we see them.

If it’s borderline, absolutely, consider the situation and score.

From what I can tell so far, batters are too eager to challenge and pitchers/catchers are too reluctant. Seems like batters are forgetting that a pitch that just barely clips the zone is the same degree of a strike as a pitch right down the middle.

I agree with that. If it's completely obvious, yes, challenge. No borderline challenges, though, unless it's important to the outcome of the game, in my view.
