So, do you think he deserved to be Manager of the Year?

I think so yes. I think his ability to make guys believe and focus on the task at hand that day made him worthy. That said his in game management was poor in my opinion and this year has been more of the same. Two things can be true as being a big league manager is multiple jobs. On the whole Murphy has done a good job but he isn't going to help a bad club win a couple games they shouldn't with tactics. He's not Sparky Anderson.

Not sure of the last time we lost 5 in a row but I know it didn't happen last year and it's been a long time.

Six in a row, June of 2023. Remember being swept at home by that terrible A's team? That was part of it. Later that same year we went into Arlington & swept the eventual WS champs on the road.

Baseball can be really odd sometimes.

The addition of the DH in the NL has changed the impact manager has on the game significantly And now the most important job they have is managing the pitching staff game wise. Murphy is a very good clubhouse guy but a very average game day coach.

The concern over Murphy's in game management is really odd to me. The Brewers obviously protect their IP in terms of competitive advantages, but I think we would all agree that 1- The various departments within the Brewers organization operate as one 2- they make decisions based on the data that they believe in.

The idea that Murph is out there playing favorites or that he is completely in control making poor decisions on his own can't possibly be true. Why invest all the money and effort into the Pitching Lab if the manager is just going to manage old school by his gut?

Rather, they obviously have data and a plan, which has proven out in the past, and I think the org has earned the benefit of the doubt that they probably know what they are doing over us posters here.

Good post; a lot of this is indeed data-driven & it's hard to argue with the results. But there are also times when you break from that, go "by the gut" which Murphy has admitted to doing at times in the past. I strongly feel Sunday should have been one of those times re Woodruff. Not only was the pitch count more than manageable but he threw a very effective & efficient sixth inning.

That said, you're correct that they've definitely earned the respect of fans in the vast majority of what they do regarding in-game, personnel etc, particularly w/the position player group considering how they're hamstrung right now.

I think a high percentage of the criticism about in game management is classic second-guessing.

Bad result=Bad move.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

I said starting Ashby on Friday was bad as soon as it was announced. You can check. It wasn't hard. He does things like this that are very easy calls.

Good decisions can lead to bad outcomes. Ultimately, I think teams and players are judged based on outcomes after a large enough sample. Not every player or type of decision warrants a large sample to test a hypothesis, though.

I said a “high percentage”. Not every last criticism is a second guess.

I don’t like what I think is an overuse of the “opener” concept either, but it doesn’t necessarily make it a bad decision. It didn’t work out as planned on Friday, but, even with that they got to the ninth thinning in a 3-3 tie. Who can say if the end result would have been different if Patrick had started.

Keep declaring in advance what moves you don’t like. Questioning the manager is a traditional part of being a fan. But, when a team routinely wins 90 games with a team that is not overburdened with exceptional individual talent, the manager can’t be making too many bad decisions.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.
