I'd feel better if we were getting 750 OPS out of one of the SS/3B positions, but no one move will fix two positions. This move was "free"... so there is no harm in trying it, IMO.

Just about every year, the Brewers trade for a rental player at the deadline... most often an RP, but we've grabbed a few bats in the past too.  If they have two positions at sub 600 OPS, I can almost guarantee they will bring someone in.

FYI, the Dodgers won the WS last year with:

  • Michael Conforto: 199/305/303/637 (79 OPS+) - 486 PAs
  • Tommy Edman: 225/274/382/655 (82 OPS+) - 377 PAs

No team has 800 OPS hitters in every position...

no, they don’t but the dodgers overall lineup is absolutely loaded and their pitching completely shut down our offense

easy to hide a couple slugs in your lineup when the other 7 are all-stars

That is a little over the top... but I get the frustration.

I'm not saying there isn't a gap... any team with Ohtani, Will Smith, and Freeman will pose a challenge.  But the teams also looked like they were going in different directions.

Dodgers were hurt mid-year when the Brewers made them look like a minor league team... but they got healthy and figured out how to use Yamamoto best at the end of the year.  They were trending up.

Meanwhile the Brewers lost Woody to injury. Priester started having his shoulder issues.  Isaac Collins disappeared. Contreras wore down.  We weren't exactly in top form.

That series wasn't lost because we had one or two slugs in the lineup.  And ironically, we traded our only "non-slug" (for that series).  The team as a whole will need to play better if they want to beat the Dodgers in top form.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."
