Checking in on players traded away at the deadline

As an off-day exercise I thought I'd take a look at some of the talent the Brewers shed themselves of before the trade deadline and see how they're doing.

Alexander Frias is at Palm Beach (low-A) where he's gotten off to a .241 start w/a couple of HRs. Young, extremely talented & not surprisingly still has the K issues.

Josiah Ragsdale has found the going a little tough in AA Springfield, hitting .203. But true to his skill set his OBP is about 100 pts higher.

Mark Manfredi struggled at the AAA level for Colorado, but maybe they figured that was good enough training for Coors because they promoted him anyway. In 3 games with the Rockies (3IP) he's allowed quite a few baserunners but only one run.

The other part of the Senzatela trade, SS Juan Martinez, is doing pretty well at class A Fresno--6 XBH in 16 games & a .361 OBP.

Blake Perkins is at AAA Columbus. He's hitting .231 in 11 games w/2 HRs (neither off Christopher Sanchez). He's drawn 9 walks for a .375 OBP so Blake might be getting his eye back.

Craig Yoho hasn't had much fun out of the Guardians' pen. An ERA over 7.5 & a WHIP of just under 2.

Jadyn Fielder is hitting .214 for class A Fayetteville.

Bonus addition (because he wasn't traded): Braden Shewmake is back in the Astros' system at AAA Sugarland & is hitting .163.

Interesting, but too small of a sample to think anyone won or lost a trade.

I still think we are going to have major regrets in trading Frias, and probably Ragsdale to division foes, for such a ridiculously shallow return.

I think this will all depend on what May and Romero (first rehab work this week) do for the pitching staff into the end of the season and the post-season, no? I think it's fair to say many of us agree it was an unfavorable package including players we grew to love - I was quite outspoken about the prospects we lost😅. But, I think when we step back we also understand the Brewers have a lot of org depth and a lot of fascinating players about to come stateside. I mean, just look at what Antunez is doing, for example, in his first weeks of full-season ball. It's bonkers! We can add the really nice upside early showings of Strosnider and the capable early work of Jones and with the number One ranked pool of Infield prospects (consensus) with a massive amount of very young middle Infield prospects we know a handful of those players can cover the OF grass. Just look to the incredible work of Tatis Jr. in San Diego right now in RF. It's obviously not a like-for-like proposition there, for obvious reasons, but middle infielder/SS level athletes have very few problems handling the outfield grass.

I really don't care about "winning" trades, and I would think GMs don't, either. It's not a healthy way to think about business deals.

That's easily the scariest of the deals. Time will tell.

How 'shallow' it is of course depends on the performance of Romero & May, can the team make a run, and if so what was their contribution towards that. On deadline day I didn't feel good about the price paid, but I'd feel much worse if there wasn't quite a bit of prospect depth to cover it.

No doubt. This is just meant to be an early look-see on a day w/no baseball.

Is it though? May will provide clear evidence of his value in the win loss column, but if he just takes the ball every 5th day he’s providing intrinsic value by allowing extra rest to Drohan, Miz, Henderson, Harrison and Gasser none of whom have thrown more than even 150 innings as professionals. 
 

Same deal to a lesser extent with Romero, the deeper the pen the fewer innings you need from the SP.

Frias and ‘Plug-n-Play’ Ragsdale is a steep price to pay, but it’s hard to quantify the value of not overtaxing their young SP
