09/21/2004 - Brewers (Santos) vs. Cardinals (Marquis)

I was telling you guys months ago that Krynzel was far superior to Pods defensively. The kid has a gun, as well. Hopefully, he will get a chance to show it to you before the season is done. Actually, I was equally impressed with him after the game. Bob Brainerd asked him a question like should this be what we can expect from now on. Dave, understanding that one game does not a career make, basically side-stepped the question and focused on the win.

Speaking of Bob Brainerd.......who out there thinks they could walk into Miller Park tonight, pick up a mic for the first time, and do a better job than Bob?

This was in JS.

Yost and his coaches were pleased with the performance of rookie left-hander Jorge De La Rosa, who limited the Cardinals to two runs in five innings on Monday and saw his fastball touch 95 mph on the radar gun.

"(San Diego scout) Ted Simmons told me he that at his age, he has the same stuff and is much more polished than Oliver Perez," Yost said, comparing De La Rosa with the Pittsburgh lefty who started with the Padres. "We were very pleased."

It is nice to get such positive reports, especially on a guy that we don't have as much history on and who has struggled, but...

JDLR is like 6 months younger than Perez, so it is not like they are saying that JDLR is comparable to Perez two years ago..they are saying JDLR is comparable to Perez now.

Does this seem like a little bit a wishful thinking to anyone else? Than again, who knows, maybe Gammons was right.

edit: I was wrong, JDLR is actually about 3 months older than Perez

Well see JDLR is special. You know how players have to prove themselves to get promoted under Doug Melvin? It doesn't apply JDLR. After all, the guy had a 5+ ERA at AAA and there was constant talk of him coming to Milwaukee throughout the year. Hendrickson dominates AAA and get shuttled back and forth to work on "things".

That isn't quite fair end...JDLR was pitching very well at the time he was called up (and no I don't have numbers for you). I didn't like how they treated Hendrickson though...let him work out of the bullpen for a few games to get his feet wet...let him watch the way the other big league pitchers prepare and pitch...just let him be around the game. I think he would have learned a lot more doing that than he did going back to Indy and doing the same old same old.

I think it is a weak comment by endaround. Melvin said that players need to accomplish a certain number of goals to advance.

I bet less than half of the goals would show up in the stats.

Pitching inside, getting ahead of hitters, maintaining a consistent arm action; those are things that coaches and scouts look for.

Stats are a result that can be skewed by luck or circumstance. Large sample sizes came minimize these issues but not 85 innings

Plus, why in the he!! would you NOT want to promote the kid for September as a call-up. He was part of a major trade and ,as mentioned by someone else, had a nice stretch of outings during the final month or so. Let's see, what(if anything) we can expect from him in the immediate to not to distant future. What is lost by doing this?

Krynzel's catch ended up #2 on Sportscenter's top 10, only outshined by a very similar catch by Vernon Wells. They said that Krynzel's catch would've been #1 most of the weeks this year, but Wells' catch was 'Play of the Year' caliber.

It wasn't September that I have problems with, its August when JDLR came up. And why should he come up to show off for the trade? Isn't that the thing that Taylor was ridiculed for doing, pushing players up to prove he was doing something? Again thoug, there was talk of JDLR being up by All Star Break coming out of Spring Training. His injury was the only thing that put a damper on that. He has been treated different from everyone else for no real explainable reason except to smoothe Doug's ego.

Yeah, I went and watched both on mlb.com, and Wells' catch was just a little sweeter. He basically jumped and used his right arm for leverage on the top of the wall and then reached way behind to rob the HR. Both great stuff.

The bottom line endaround is the kid EARNED a look. HE was lights out down the stretch and lets take a roll call on all left-handers throwing 95+. I don't see many hands. I'm not sure what more reasons are needed. Plus, we are talking about someone who held the Cards to two runs in five innings on a night they were looking to clinch the division, so he didn't exactly embarrass himself. His ERA wasn't good due to a horrible start, but his upside is far superior to Travis Phelps. September is an excellent time for teams like us to evaluate what we have coming and what holes remain within the organization. This just seems like a "no brainer" to me.

He's left-handed.

I'm sorry, but this is the biggest load of crap comment I have ever heard. Oliver Perez is a potential Cy Young winner. If JDLR has the same stuff and better polish, why wasn't he dominating AAA? Nope, sorry, that was just a token comment from a former Brewer to make the current regime look good.

I have no problem with JDLR pitching if his arm is healthy enough. My problem is with the idea that we are going to make prospects prove they are ready except when we don't..
