Lambeauleap.net and forum topics

well - honestly - since it'd be in the off-topic forum, and its topic is not football, I'd expect it to be left alone. This is the same logic applied in feeling frustrated that someone can't start a topic about, say, Michigan football's shocking 0-2 start - which is a national news story, much like the "Ummm.... maps!" pageant girl.

I guess I just would like an objective answer that doesn't hedge. If the real reason is that utilizing LLF saves Brian (and potentially others) money, fine - wonderful, in fact! But if the reason is more based upon "We don't want it!" and subsequent line-drawing, then I think it's silly and disappointing.

EDIT: did you simply mean it saves money for the cost(s) of BF, or do you mean to say that by operating a second site, this lowers the net cost (including what it costs to run both LLF & BF)

It reduces the costs of Brewerfan.

And it's not an issue of "We don't want it" at all..... there wouldn't have been the trouble of setting up a whole 2nd site if that was the case.

I suggest not to look at it as the Brewerfan staff trying to restrict football talk, but rather expand it. Like said, they sound like they'll try to fuse the two sites and forums together a little better somehow, but its been difficult with the recent Yuku migration.

And frankly, I'd be a little peeved if I was Brian and I was being questioned about financial motives. How much do you pay to keep the site running?

Posted

I'm not questioning financial motives, in fact I mentioned explicitly that if keeping all football talk at LLF saves money in the long run, great!

EDIT: so PF - just to be clear that I get what you mean...the excess (or abundance) of football talk at BF led those involved to decide that the best method would be to make a separate forum? Because that makes sense to me entirely.

here is my problem with it...

if i want to talk college football, i participate on a couple other boards where i know i can talk college football. there are times where i want to talk college football with people from this forum.

same for college basketball. i know that i can go to the other boards i normally frequent and talk college hoops...especially the badgers and the big ten, but there are times where i want to see what people from this forum have to say. i can go to the boards at buckyville and scout and talk badger hoops until i am blue in the face, but there are times where i want to hear what people here think.

it can just lead to a never-ending spiral. say the bucks get real good again and someone here wants to create a basketball forum, does that mean all basketball talk will have to go to that forum? i believe someone here was trying to start a bucks forum which fizzled out quickly.

i am sure everyone on this board can go "somewhere else" and talk college football, or any football for that matter. i just dont see the reason why you would want people to go elsewhere.

(and i am sure someone will say that most of the people that post on the other forum post here as well...which is even more reason to wonder why you need two separate forums...and probably two separate bills)

A couple of points:

1. While directing football talk elsewhere doesn't affect the non-existent revenue of Brewerfan, it does effect how much Brian has to PAY to run it.

2. The goal is to eventually have an integrated forum, where no additional registration will be necessary. Since EZ board was on the way out and the Yuku migration was due at some point in 2007, it was decided not to put LL forums on ezboard, and to look elsewhere. At that point, beta versions of Yuku were rough and very poor, so phpbb was chosen. Casey tells us that something is in development to migrate non-ezboard communities to Yuku, so that may be something we explore when that becomes available, and create an integrated forum system. This has not been discussed and we don't have some sort of contingency plan, so I might be offering a possibility that Brian hasn't even considered yet.

So as of now, football discussion is being directed to Lambeauleap, and that won't change in the near future.

Put it this way, what would you expect us to do if someone started a Jeff Suppan thread in the off-topic forum at Lambeauleap?

Leave it alone? People are there to talk about Packer football, if they want to have a side discussion about something else, fine. I'm sure someone would post "hey, check out bf.net for some good Brewer talk." I just don't see a need to *force* it. Look at the DVD rental thread in Off Topic- it takes up bandwith (and thus $$), should it be closed and have interested forumers directed to a movie message board? I don't think so. This just seems arbitrary and stubborn.

I don't necessarily expect anything to change, I just wanted to voice my opinion. I still think that like the softball subforums, there should have been a football subform for the community.

Thank you for saying it more eloquently that I could have.

I think the problem is they feel too much like seperate communities. Its the same people at both places, there's just too big a divide between them. We need a "divider" instead of a "wall", but we won't have that until we are able to integrate the two forums so you can have one account for both.

We're currently looking into bringing LambeauLeap to Yuku, in which the two communities could be closely linked to each other. But until they create the ability to import boards other than EZBoard, there's not much we can do at the moment. So we're just hoping that people don't mind being a little patient until that time comes.

the problem with it is that EVERYTHING else is allowed in the off topic but any football talk and politics. You can have a thread about being drunk but not a good discussion about a hard fought badgers win. It just doesn't make any sense, no matter how you spin it. I post at LL, but still don't like this rule about no football talk. Its not my site, so it really doesn't matter what I like and don't like I guess.

Huh? Who's saying you can't? You just should put it in the right place. Now that the community has a specific football section, that's where football talk goes. The two areas will be better fused in the future, as Ponytail said.

well, the off topic is off topic from baseball. last time i checked, football is off topic from baseball. this whole topic gets me upset so I'm just going to drop it. It makes no sense to make your valued members go somewhere else.

temke said it right for me, too. Although I do post at LL from time to time (knowing the "laws" around here about football talk), it's fine but also a slight pain. Mostly, because I don't get many views on topics that I may create or many responses to my questions inside of a thread.

It's not major as I'm a Brewer fan first and a Packer fan second (a close second, but second nonetheless).

Well, it's not quite every topic. We've started cutting out the Babes threads because they seem to have a major impact on workplace filters. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

As far as cost, I'm not really sure how or if it matters, but I don't think that was a major motivation for funneling the football talk. I'll find out from Kristin how we're charged by Yuku. All I know is that they're using a system that's different from the page view system used at ezBoard.

I guess I'd look at this as an organizational thing. We have a home for football talk and it ought be used. Additionally, there've been several times when exactly the same thread has been posted on each forum.

But my main point in posting right now... would this cease to be an issue if Lambeauleap were switched over to Yuku? For one thing, we'd be able to consolidate logins. Additionally, we might be able break down the wall in several other ways.

But as b19 mentions, there's no importer for boards other than ezboard. If LL were moved to Yuku and the current board was gradually shut down and made 'read only' for archive purposes, would people have a problem with that? (I guess that question should really be posted over at LL, too.)

Looking back, it probably would have been a better decision to launch the LL forum as an ezBoard, but hindsight is 20/20 and there really wasn't adequate information to work with at the time.

Anyway, here's something that members can do. Yuku has a page where members can vote for new features. Each member can vote for one item. (If you vote for a second item, your vote changes.) Import Other Boards is one of the items. Being a large site, we could have quite an impact on the 'vote'.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Considering that some of the Brewers igt's are 4k+ views, I take it with a grain of salt.

Let's not mention last night, thanks.

Page hits and number of users might've been one the reasons cited by naysayers in this thread, but it's only part of the whole issue. Not to mention that traffic on gamdeday doesn't really translate to, say, a random wednesday afternoon. Ot that it was primarily NFL traffic, not NCAA enthusiasts. I'm guessing that deciding on the current policy wasn't an easy choice, but here's another vote that disagrees and thinks it really stinks. Was there ever any thought to a single "sticky" football thread in Off-Topic that users could post football talk in, be it Badgers/other-NCAA/Packers/other-NFL/Bonecrushers/other-Arena/high school/etc? (With occassional friendly reminders in that thread about LL?)

I really don't understand the big deal. I'm homer here, I'm homer there. It takes one minute to register and many of the posters there are the same ones that post here.

this argument can be made both ways:

A: everyone is the same so what is the difference?

B: everyone is the same so why have another site?

i think the horse is beaten on this one.

Would it help if someone were to start a board specifically for college sports? Football, basketball, hockey, etc?

If you give me about a week I can have one up and running no problem.

Just let me know.
