Troy Percival - Brewers in the mix?

Just curious as to what you guys think about going out and getting Troy Percival this off-season.

 

He's a proven big game pitcher, clearly he's not going to buckle under the pressure after a boarderline HOF career as a closer.

My thought is to bring him in as a SU man(obviously contingent upon bringing Coco back, which I think we'll do).

Came back this year sporting a .85 Whip to go with a 1.80 ERA, and very good peripherals. 36 K's to 10 BB's in 40 innings.

 

Worked his way all the way back after elbow injuries seemed to have cost him his career.

 

Wants to play for a WS contender, and I don't think there's any question that with him and Coco at the backend of our pen, Turnbow+ a guy like David Riske as our MR'ers that we're a WS contender.

Just curious at to what you guys would think about this.

 

My other favorite options(other than trading Zach Jackson for Okajima and Papelbon) would be Chad Cordero, Brad Lidge(who by the way has REALLY gotten a bad rap. Had Turnbow had his type of season, we'd be ecstatic...on bad year in his career), and Gange as SU men.

It'd have to be a one year, incentive laden deal but might be worth the risk. He's 38 and his elbow could explode at any time.

I don't recall where I heard this, but I know I'm not simply making this up (sorry for no linkage). Percival has stated that he wants to play another partial season, so take that into account in any estimation(s).

You know, that could actually work out better for us.

 

Have him come back by the middle of June, end of June, and and give him 2.5 for the rest of the year, maybe some incentives.

But in the meantime you give some guys in your pen a chance to establish themselves. Guys like Steve Brey can show you if he's got a chance to do something this year, maybe Aquino can develop, whoever it may be. Seth McClung would be another one.

 

The thing about reliever is you just never know who's going to be a star from one year to the next. You can reasonbly count on guys like Percival(to be good, not healthy per say), Cordero...and the top guys, but you just never know when a Heath Bell is going to pop up, a Carlos Marmol, a...whoever.

 

So maybe one of those guys steps up when given a chance early, then you supplement that with Percival and you could end up being stronger than if you have Percival throw all year long. Plus the likelihood of him coming back and throwing strong while he's here are obviously better.

Percival has not decided whether to sign with a team that will let him close, regardless, or sign with a contender, and take whatever role they will give him.

Id like to have both he and Coco back. The 2 of them along with Turnbow and Mota and shouse would make for a real dominating Bullpen.

Well i have to say we do fill 2 of 3 options there,but that is a very risky move for a 2 year deal

If Percival's initial interest was in not taking on a full year's workload, it seems he's got the interest there to land a full year's contract. I'd worry about him getting overused & burning out, personally. Without that concern, I'd love to see us ink Troy.

That's my worry. I'd be very leery of throwing him on b-to-b days or more than one inning at a time. If we could rely on close to proper usage, I'd have less concern.

excuse my ignorance, but why on earth do so many here covet these injury plagued has-beens?

 

I want nothing to do with Wood or Percival. There is no way we get a full season out of Wood, the guy is like glass. Percival? lol This is a joke right?

 

seriously, I need some convincing as to why we would want to spend one thin nickel on guys like this who are a constant member of the DL...

We can't waste money on guys that are historically bad, either. These constantly injured guys can be signed for considerably less years for considerably less money, and they have high upside. If we don't have to pay them as much because of their injury history, than the situation kind of works itself out.

I see Percival's name continues to be associated with the Brewers. I wouldn't mind taking a shot with him (pitched pretty well last year), but I really hope they don't overspend...
