Arthur Bryant's

Possibly the most famous barbecue place in the city, or some would argue in the world, Arthur Bryant's still fries its potatoes in lard, and they're delicious. The beef brisket and ribs are wonderful, too. This is the original of three locations in town. Daily for lunch and dinner. $. Most major credit cards. 1727 Brooklyn Ave. (additional locations at Village West in Kansas City, Kansas, and at the Ameristar Casino), Kansas City. Phone 816-231-1123. http://www.arthurbryantsbbq.com.

Gates Barbecue

Family-owned and operated, this restaurant boasts a no-frills decor and has built a deservedly loyal following based on its excellent ribs and very good beef brisket. (The recipes are readily available online.) Daily for lunch and dinner. $. Most major credit cards. 1221 Brooklyn (near the 18th and Vine Historic District), Kansas City. Phone 816-483-3880. http://www.gatesbbq.com.

Find a Koreana restaurant, for anyone in the Appleton area Koreana is awesome. Tofu Bul Go Gi is basically stir fry vegtables and tofu in a spicy barbeque sauce.

Garden Burger also has vegitatian BBQ - ribs, in your grocers freezer isle.

I went to Gates last year and it was pretty good. However, I went to a place called LC's (I believe) in a rougher part of town, and it was amazing. If you can go to LC's, you won't regret it.

In related news: Des Moines sucks.

I think Iowa is pretty cool, if you were to become a pheasant (lots of corn and gravel) -- otherwise Iowa largely blows. I do like Dubuque though as you are driving over the Mississippi.

Alright.... so we went to Arthur Bryant's, and to be honest, I wasn't all that impressed. I had the rib tips, which were the special of the day. Don't get me wrong, they were good, but I think I've probably had better in Tennessee and Alabama. Perhaps I should have gotten a regular menu item (like a sandwich) instead of the rib tips, and I'd be willing to give it another shot.... but to me, KC wasn't all that impressive.

I'm in Des Moines again right now on the way back home. I think I'll stick to southern BBQ instead... the KC stuff just wasn't my style.

I haven't been to Memphis yet.... but the BBQ at the Loveless Cafe by Nashville was tremendous. Big Bob Gibson's in Decatur, AL (By Huntsville) is probably my favorite.

And this might be sacrilege, but I like Famous Dave's quite a bit. I still have to stop by Speed Queen as well.

My Arthur Bryant's experience was a pulled pork sandwich IIRC, which was amazing (though I don't have the Nashville or Memphis experience to balance it).
