Tejada moved to 3B and should add more pop to the lineup.

 

I agree that they have really no pitching what to speak of and gave up two pretty good arms and an OFer for him.

 

No I will have Braun and Tejada at 3B for my fantasy team.

Definitely have to wonder about that. Not to judge, but you have to take a pretty close look at players that played in the Bay Area with the whole BALCO thing. And how he came out of nowhere, had a few big years, and has not been the same the last few. Again, if he's innocent, great, but it makes you scratch your head.

While I love Scott's production, the more I've though about it, imho adding a 3B that can handle the position & moving Braun to LF is the only way to go for 2008. I don't think Doug is going to go calling, and I don't think the O's would want to deal a solid, cheap LF they just landed. Just a guess.

Wow, the Astros gave up a ton! Thinking about it, a similiar offer from the Brewers would probably go like this:

Mat Gamel

Manny Parra

Jeremy Jeffress

Matt Wise/Seth McClung

 

There's no way I would have given up that package for Tejada, regardless of the Brewers' need for a competent 3B. The Astros gave up a good, young full-time corner outfielder, a terrific 3B prospect, two top pitching prospects and a guy in Sarfate who looked good for them in limited action last year. WOW! They better hope Tejada hits 40 HRs for them, or this is a steal for the Orioles.

Tejada's probably going to be around 15-25 HRs. His ISO is in a free-fall, and Bill James's .301/.359/.479/.838 projection is entirely too generous imho. I'd expect something more like .285/.340/.440/.780. That's a lot to pay - in addition to his gaudy salary.

With the Astros eating that contract, it should have only been Scott and maybe Albers. Houston is making bad move after bad move.

 

Astros will be in last place by 2009. Book it. Oswalt may be on the block this July.

I realize Baltimore is a bit of a hitters haven, but Houston is even more so for a right handed batter. With that being said, it's not outrageous. ( I remember predictions of 50 homeruns for Carlos down there), but it should play alright for Tejada. Obviously, they still overpaid quite a bit to get him. They need pitching a lot more than they needed Tejada.

 

EDIT: Wow, I just looked Tejada up on B-R, and I didn't realize what a dropoff he had last year. He had a .797 OPS, but he only had 39 extra base hits in 568 plate appearances.

Thing is, can't Tejada opt out? Now he'll be 32 and getting $13 million in 2009 but given that he'll look better for a long term deal at 32 than 33, this may only be for one year of Tejada.

Tejada missed 29 games last year, and it was the first time in about 8 years he didn't play in 162. I think it's grossly unfair to already be putting that type of label on a guy after one DL stint.

Houston was in a precarious position. They have some good veteran talent and play in a weak division, so they probably felt they either needed to make a big splash to try to win now, or sell off and rebuild. If I were them, I probably would have went with the latter. They'll have a decent lineup with Lee, Berkman, Pence and Tejada, but I don't see them having nearly enough talent, particularly at pitching, to compete, even in the NL Central. This move may add a couple of wins this year, but it could potentially make them bottom dwellers for years to come.

So the Astros idea for the improving the team is making their starting rotation which was already terrible even worse?

 

Oswalt is good ill give them that, but if Wandy Rodgriguez is your #2 starter, a guy who has made 8 and 5 starts the last two years respectively is your #3 and you have garbage in the #4 and #5 spot I dont care if your offense is at least average your still going to be terrible. The have a major offensive hole at short, catcher is a huge question mark, and so is RF.

Tejada will now be facing NL Central pitching.

 

At not yet 32, he's got some big seasons still in him. It might hurt Astros in long run. But short term I don't see how it doesn't help them. They didn't give up their 3 best pitchers (Oswalt, Backe, or Rodriguez) nor any everyday starter at any position.

 

They could now use either Wiggenton or Everett as trade bait for another pitcher or try to sign a FA like Silva, Lohse or Colon.

 

As for Brewers take. Well the O's now need a SS and the Brewers have Bill Hall. What would it take with Hall to get Bedard?
