  1. I guess, but when you gamble, & your losing result is a guaranteed $7.25M... hard to blame a guy for gambling on free agency
  2. What do other players have to do with how Gamel performs? Well obviously it's important -- I mean, look at how 2003 Huntsville Star Dave Krynzel's failure to pan out in the bigs has been predictive of Corey Hart's career.
  3. Hasn't Jackson been viewed as a tool for a long time now? Was he really expected to bring in leadership?
  4. That seems like a pretty solid prediction, RockCo. Makes sense for both parties.
  5. Stumbled across this quote from Counsell: "[The decision is] easier when you get more softball teams calling you than baseball teams. And the softball teams want to DH for you." Hard to dislike this guy.
  6. So I just want to be clear, you actually think Gamel should feel dissed because the Brewers are talking about using Hart at 1B once a week? I can't keep using 'dissed'. I think Gamel has had plenty of reason to be annoyed with how the Brewers have handled him, though I do acknowledge that he plays/played a role in that, too. So one more intimation that he's not ready would be annoying to me if I were in his shoes. Keep in mind the bat that the Brewers would be getting in the lineup to replace Gamel against lefties would be one of Gomez/Aoki/Plush. So yeah, I'd feel ticked if I were Gamel & the Brewers realistically think any of those three are a better option against LHP than Mat. Keep in mind 'one game a week' would cost Gamel around 100 PAs on the year, and he's going to need as many healthy PAs as possible to continue to develop.. If the PAs were going to better hitting options, I guess it wouldn't bother me much.
  7. The Stand Up to Cancer spot with Ron Darling holding up a "My Catcher" sign was really moving. I wish him and his family well in this very rough time. I agree on both counts. Since Gary's playing days were a bit before my time, it took me a while to connect the dots on what Darling's sign meant, but once I did... yeah.
  8. You are talking about a guy that hasn't been a regular in the majors (or earned anything) as being dissed if the Brewers have a backup plan? So he hasn't 'earned' anything, like Casey McGehee did? The notion of a player 'earning' anything is junk imo. As Rick Schlesinger recently noted, Gamel is the first baseman. Gamel can hit, it's not his fault many Brewers fans just don't recognize that.
  9. It's extremely unlikely but it's not impossible. Not to mention that it would probably make the team worse, overall EDIT: Hah, just read prophet's thread in the ML forum about attending an event in which Rick Schlesinger was the featured speaker: "Lastly, one guy asked about signing Fielder, and Rick was honest and said it's not going to happen. With the payroll the way it is right now, many moves would have to be made to do it, and they feel that all the necessary scenarios would only weaken the team. He said that it is Gamels job to lose, and they are confident in him. The same guy pressed the issue a little bit (same guy who said they should trade Braun) and Rick had a funny line. He said the odds of signing Fielder would be about the same as getting struck by lightening three times, while getting mauled by a family of polar bears, with the winning powerball ticket in your back pocket."
  10. Just because Wolf and Cameron performed well doesn't excuse or justify away any of the bad money spent on the FAs Melvin has acquired, it's not a recipe for success, not for Milwaukee. Well then they weren't 'bad money' contracts, especially since neither guy was blocking anyone.
  11. Also Evans, Gasser and Bruiser were in the lane and down low a lot of the game. They got inside a lot more than normal and that has been a trend. Gasser has been going to the rim a lot more the last 3 games. That's great to hear, glad the coaches & players are getting over that hump. It'd be great to see this team finish strong.
  12. We don't know if the Mariners preferred to trade Hernandez over Pineda, but it's entirely possible that the Yankees wanted Pineda because Felix's contract is so big. And yes, I know I'm talking about the Yankees here.
  13. I hope he can find some kind of peace with not only his loved ones, but himself too. Very sad indeed.
  14. Was the offense starting to click (which to me implies that they've been improving & might be expected to continue to improve), or was it simply that three-pointers were falling?
  15. People really need to accept this. I wish that would happen. I don't think it will until he actually signs his contract elsewhere, though.
  16. Are Nebraska or Northwestern teams that we should be excited about beating? I realize the Purdue win is definitely a good one.
  17. As Prince so eagerly reminded everyone, Boras works for him. The demand is coming from Fielder. Things will probably move quickly since Darvish has signed.
  18. Ouch, that nugget is painful, NRT.
  19. The case with Brendan Katin (MLB didn't uphold his suspension) wasn't resolved for months
  20. I'd guess he was brought on mainly as a PH vs [R]HP who could also act as a utility IF This was my impression of him, & why I thought he was only a LHB http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  21. Oh, Allen's the guy that hit a tape-measure HR against the Brewers in Phoenix. Pulled it down the RF line into the second- or third-level concourse at Chase Field. Looks like a good power hitter, but since the Brewers already have Gamel I don't see them being players.
  22. Conrad is a switch-hitter, just to clarify. I actually thought he was a lefty & had to check. I think they need to evaluate their bullpen candidates for the 6th and 7th innings. Here are the arms that I count the Brewers would be choosing from there: Parra, Braddock, Kintzler, Estrada, De La Cruz, Fiers, Loe, Manzanillo, Veras. Even with the individual concerns about certain players, that's a pretty large pool from which to pick.
  23. I'm confused, what is this "stupid situation" with Pujols LaRussa is referring to? Free agency? I believe that's correct. At least that's what I thought he meant.
  24. fwiw, linkage on what djoctagone is referencing: http://www.mlbtraderumors...-to-sign-yu-darvish.html
  25. The player to man LF has already been signed in Aoki. My best guess at this point is that CF & LF will manned by the three-man rotation of Aoki/Plush/Gomez during any suspension Braun may have to serve.
