  1. Agreed. One thing I like about Lucroy is that I feel like if you told him you thought he wasn't a catcher, he'd punch you. Just seems like a catcher down to his DNA. I think that mentality might help him in the eyes of baseball lifer guys in MLB (grit, battling, etc), so I doubt there's a shortage of suitors for him as a catcher.
  2. The point is not all the posters agreed with that notion. I then provided why I thought it would take more than just Peralta. My bad for not tagging the person(s) that disagreed with the original point. 'Crazy talk' is condescension that's against the board guidelines, especially in the context of being targeted at someone in particular. Instead of calling you out on that right away, I tried to steer the discussion back to the actual premise of the thread. On-topic regarding your post, I think the rationale you use in your valuation of McMahon & Peralta makes a lot of sense. I still think Peralta is worth keeping... seems like you could try him as a power back-end bullpen arm as a worst-case scenario. If the timing of the trade is right, closers can fetch a good return. But if McMahon is as good as he looks, I wouldn't say no to adding something to Peralta to get it done.
  3. Sveumrules literally says in the thread title & OP that the offer would be Peralta+
  4. Another sensitive person I see. They are excuses as to why he is a replacement level player. None of us are accusing the man of being weak-minded. I am saying all of those things that RR threw out there are excuses FROM RON HIMSELF as to why Segura has stunk. I never once mentioned Segura as to saying them himself nor was stating that he should just "play through them." I am just saying that they are all just excuses to think there is more to Jean Segura than being a replacement level player. The reality here is that the truth is probably in the middle, & there's no excuse to be rude to another poster.
  5. It doesn't make much of a difference. We're not competing anytime soon, so we can put a pan of lasagna behind the plate for all I care. For the most part, I agree, but at what point does it become a detriment to the development of a young pitcher(s)? I recall Maldonado consistently communicating to his pitchers about mechanics (by tapping his shoulder or somehow otherwise gesturing to the area he's emphasizing). I know his offense won't be good, but I think Maldonado will be an asset to young pitchers, not to mention he's a good defender as well.
  6. October 2015 feature (including some video) on McMahon http://www.minorleagueball.com/2015/10/12/9501459/colorado-rockies-ryan-mcmahon-future-all-star
  7. I'm hoping he's assigned to Appleton as well (as another native). I couldn't find it in this thread, but another BF poster recently listed out what the T-Rats' lineup could look like in 2016, & it's pretty stacked. EDIT: Found it, post #94 by YoungGeezy1
  8. http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/headshots/mlb/players/full/6218.png&w=350&h=254 Plus I can play 2b, 3b and 1b. You keep up these kinds of antics, & the banhammer's a-comin'! Also, trigger warning!
  9. I wonder if Arizona see him as a possible bullpen arm... let his velocity play up & use him as a groundball type guy.
  10. Yes, it's the Pioneer League & miles away from The Show. But to post a line of .360/.436/.640/1.076 in the Pioneer as an 18 year old shortstop is pretty damn impressive. Here's a video link from Diaz's MiLB player page of him blasting a letters-high fastball for a 3-run shot: http://www.milb.com/multimedia/vpp.jsp?content_id=350981683&sid=milb
  11. This move is now official, and local ties (to the Pittsburgh region) are part of the reason Joe decided to move on. Post-Gazette story: Pirates hire Joe Block as play-by-play man Joe's farewell/transitional tweet http://i.imgur.com/LDXNqNv.jpg
  12. Video of Diaz from his H.S. days: My first thought was that his loading motion really looks like a LH version of Carlos Gómez's. Not that that actually means anything, but I thought it was very smilar.
  13. This looks like a savvy pickup. No one in the org. as of today is clearly a better option for CF (although his build makes me think he's a corner OF longterm), & his potential upside is obviously pretty high. If we wind up with even a budget version of Carlos Gomez, then this is an outstanding move. Nothing to lose on our part. It's kind of fun to be in the position to be able to roll the dice on guys like this. I see a clear plan from Stearns, but even if you don't (or don't agree with it), it's undeniable that he's taking advantage of the types of deals he should be -- shows a definite savvy & understanding of what rules or loopholes to be capitalizing on.
  14. I could see something along these lines happening. I think Kepler is going to be very good, very soon. Thanks to both of you for highlighting Kepler -- really interesting prospect! Born in Germany (mother from San Antonio, father from Poland & both are dancers)... played soccer at the youth level for Hertha BSC (soccer club in Berlin, Germany that plays in the country's top-flight league), had a scholarship to play tennis at a high level, but chose baseball. Seems like he must be a natural athlete, given his bloodlines, multi-sport background, & honestly his total # of triples as a MiLB player suggests that he can really run. Add on a really strong BB/K ratio. Yes he's a year or two away from the bigs at this point, but I think if he makes MLB, you're at worst looking at a faster & more athletic version of Lyle Overbay. And if his HR power develops. all of a sudden you could be looking at a 4-5 tool player at 1B. EDIT: it's also not like Kepler wasn't a well-regarded prospect upon his signing. From his Wikipedia page... "He signed with the Twins in 2009 for US$800,000, the largest signing bonus given by an MLB franchise to a European-born player." Maybe he amounts to nothing, but he's a really interesting prospect to me... pretty unique.
  15. 'Who is better?' is a tough/loaded question. Who is more talented? For me it's clearly López. Who should be expected to be better in 2016? I'd lean López, but wouldn't be surprised if it's Davies. Davies is really an extreme case imo -- from the standard 'behind the pitcher' MLB camera angle, he legitimately looks like he's about 16 years old on the mound... but his results have been good. Makes what Mike Fiers has accomplished almost seem unsurprising. The first start of Davies' that I saw, it took me a full inning to stop thinking it must've been some teenager living out Rookie of the Year. On the other hand, you have López who has the ideal pitcher's build, stuff, etc. I guess I would be surprised if Davies is better than López next season, but not shocked. I think the Crew will keep Jorge in AAA to preserve a year of big-league service time, but ultimately he's up to The Show to stay come May/June. I know the team won't be very competitive overall, but for me this season will be very compelling to watch. Almost every start there'll be a SP going that is reason enough to tune in imo. Peralta, Nelson, Jungmann, Davies, López... hell, Garza might well slot in as the #5 SP all season. Not that that's a feelgood thing given his price tag, but it's an endorsement of the young pitching developed by the club, which is worth celebrating in & of itself given our franchise history in that category.
  16. How much do you know about any of those players?
  17. Sums up my thoughts nicely. A budget signing with no downside & potentially valuable upside. Keep on keepin' on, young Mr. Stearns.
  18. No -- absolutely not. He's 28 & it's very clear that he's not going to improve notably. GMs & talent evaluators don't make small-sample assessments like fans assume they do & like fans themselves do. Just like a club that liked him wouldn't hesitate to trade for him if he had a bad month to start the season, a good month or two isn't going to change things. He can't change his value immensely in either direction at this point... and it can honestly only go down. Come on man, only a Sith deals with absolutes. Touché! You & I have drastically different understandings of the word "immensely." Could he increase his value? Maybe a small amount, but it would be more due to a team having an increased need than Davis getting massively better at baseball. The reality is that he is who he is & won't improve much more.

  20. Late to the game here, but really good read. Thanks for finding & linking that, Eye Black.
  21. Except that Sheets had two amazing pitches which somehow compensated for the lack of a third pitch. Yeah. Using Sheets as anecdotal evidence that you don't need three pitches to be a SP is like using Jamie Moyer as evidence that you can pitch until you're 50.
  22. This is season 5 with no forseeable end to the pattern. 2012: Hart, Ishikawa, Taylor Green, Gamel, Brooks Conrad 2013: Yuni, Juan Francisco, Sean Halton, Alex Gonzalez, Blake Lalli 2014: Reynolds, Overbay, Clark, Rogers 2015: Lind, Rogers Ahh! The horror! The horror! "The goggles -- they do nothing!" It's like the line of also-rans that played QB for the Bears during Favre's GB tenure.
  23. The "Prince Fielder hit 50 Bombs Deck"? Your post got me curious, so I went to HitTrackerOnline.com. Here's his spray chart from 2007, with the Miller Park outfield wall overlaid: http://i.imgur.com/Gg1kaHH.jpg Looks like only about 3 or so could've been courtesy of the right field area/ATI Club (& any of those could've come in other ballparks as well... I didn't dig that deep). In fact, he led the league in no-doubters in 2007 with 16. I just didn't remember Prince getting lucky with where he played that season -- his avg distance per HR was 6th in MLB. It was truly a season for the ages.
