  1. I think Loney would come in and produce pretty close to his career road OPS (.854), and Broxton would be an expensive but powerful addition to the 'pen. Loney has two more seasons of team salary control, Broxton is in his final season of team control. At this point, I don't think the Brewers would do better in dealing Prince. Whether they should take this deal or not, I'm not sure.
  2. I'm taking the wait and see approach, but if Marcum pitches like he has over the past few seasons with Gallardo-esque numbers I just want people to talk about this realistically. Marcum has done that ONE season, not "the past few". If he pitches like he has the past few seasons, the Brewers added another Randy Wolf.
  3. Attitude, yes. But work ethic? Where have you read or heard anything about that?
  4. I don't want to be rude, but Cain/Odorizzi/Jeffress most likely wouldn't net Greinke, let alone tacking on Gordon.
  5. Via MLBTR, Yahoo's Steve Henson tweets, "Dodgers source: loney won't be traded because he'd be too expensive to replace on free agent market."
  6. Jon Heyman tweets "Pavano has aggressive nationals, plus twins and 2 others in mix. Could happen this week" I'm hoping that the Brewers aren't one of those two other teams. I'll root for the Nats to overspend twice early in this offseason.
  7. I couldn't agree more. Marcum is an ace. I get the injury concern but the guy has a decent track record for being very good. I'm not sure what some of you need for proof, but he's got around 500 innings of proof and consistency. Marcum has only been an ace for one season. And if you get technical, he wasn't an ace, he was a #2-caliber pitcher in terms of WAR. My precise problem with this trade is that Marcum doesn't have a strong track record, but it seems some at BF are prepared to proclaim him at least as good as Yo. His FIP/xFIP numbers for '08 & '07: 4.93/4.42, 4.46/4.24; for '10 they were 3.74/3.90. I want to believe Marcum is a legit #1 or #2 type pitcher, and I want see him go out & prove my concerns foolishly wrong -- and see that Melvin uncovered a blossoming ace before he became unaffordable. But imo when you look at Marcum's track record, you don't see an ace, you see a guy that pitched very well for the first time in '10 but still has a lot of question marks. I don't mean this a piling on Marcum, but I thought it was an interesting tidbit. His OPS allowed v. RH last season was .859, compared to a filthy .532 v. LH. His career split is also reverse -- .752 to .703.
  8. Also, I understand this is a Brewer board but I am willing to bet 25 out of 30 GM's would rather have Jennings over Cain. Yeah, Jennings is regarded as a better prospect, league-wide. Jennings produced better than Cain in their age-22 seasons at AA. Cain performed a bit better at AAA last season, but was a year older than Jennings & at the same level. If I were a betting man, I'd be betting on Jennings exceeding Cain's age-24 production at AAA in his own age-24 season this year. And I think Doug Melvin has totally uncovered the next market inefficiency: player origin. Before you know it, Corey Hart will be with the Reds, Ryan Braun with the Dodgers, Rickie Weeks with the Rays, Carlos Gomez with the Cibao Eagles, and the Brewers will be in the World Series!
  9. FanGraphs with two different perspectives on the deal: from the Brewers' p.o.v., from Toronto's p.o.v. Both takes agree the Jays sold high. Jack Moore felt that, from the Brewers' perspective, "it’s hard to imagine [Lawrie's] value at a higher point in the near future."
  10. Oh, that's totally a picture of Mat. I love it; new avatar time.
  11. I would love to see the Brewers sign Beltre, even though I know Melvin won't sign him.
  12. According to Ken Rosenthal, the Jays are on Greinke's no-trade list. Doesn't mean he couldn't waive the NTC, of course. KR also notes that the Royals could land Greinke if they'd send "Kyle Drabek, outfielder Travis Snyder and another minor leaguer or two, according to the Toronto Sun." If that other minor leaguer is Lawrie, I'd have to think the Royals would agree.
  13. Going by WAR, Marcum was tied for 40th among MLB pitchers in 2010. Gavin Floyd, who some at BF deemed not enough in return for one season of Fielder, was tied for 21st. I'll stop posting on this for now & just say that I really, really hope my first-take reactions to this deal are wrong. I hope Marcum comes in & pitches like a stud.
  14. My comparison isn't between Marcum & Lawrie, it's between Marcum & other possible SP trade targets. If Lawrie were a Boston or NY prospect, he'd be all you were hearing about this offseason in trade rumors.
  15. But is it good? "Not bad" shouldn't be the goal. If the second pitcher Melvin is adding this offseason is someone roughly as good as Marcum, then I think our starting pitching will be pretty solid. If not, we're just marginally better than last season.
  16. This is a silver lining I want to believe. Good point. What's not to like? The fact that Marcum has been a legit #2 guy for all of one season, and doesn't throw hard enough to give himself any room for error.
  17. Bringing in good pitching is praiseworthy. Giving away your best trading chip for 2 seasons of a solid pitcher isn't. Lawrie could have highlighted a Greinke deal. Unless Milwaukee is on Greinke's no-trade list.
  18. Trying to make myself feel better about this deal FanGraphs: "Post-Tommy John, Marcum Strong" Without good velocity, Marcum did a nice job of generating swings-and-misses last season.
  19. I just dry-heaved. At first when I saw this thread, I was really excited. But then I remembered Shaun Marcum isn't, in fact, Ricky Romero.
  20. Where have you read this? I really don't know much about him, but how does a guy that barely touches 90mph have "tons of upside"?
  21. This is my take on it at the moment. Really, a guy that doesn't even average 90 on his fastball? From his FanGraphs page, he throws a cut fastball (about 15% of the time), so I wonder if maybe he varies the run on his fastball quite a bit... meaning, I wonder if maybe the movement allows him to live without elite velocity. From the pitch values FG uses, Marcum's changeup looks like an amazing pitch. But this reeks of a total Melvin deal, too, in that he's buying high on Marcum. If we gave Lawrie to get this guy, my rage won't fit into words. I hope Marcum proves me wrong.
  22. Apologies if this was posted already... Link Is it too much to wish for a GM that doesn't live by arbitrary rules for trading? ('you get more for bats in the offseason'; 'we must get pitching for Fielder'; 'we want MLB-ready pitchers')
  23. So you're blaming Melvin for not acquiring players because they can block trades to Milwaukee? Or just accusing him of being a blatant liar? I really have no idea where this comes from.
