Some kids down the street made them prior to Snowmageddon. They're about 7 or 8 feet tall. Impressive.

    While this is true, Shields's fastball has been terrible going off the FanGraphs pitch values. Garza's, on the other hand, has been very good. Shields's fastball made me think of Manny Parra's, & how just because it's thrown hard doesn't mean it's a good pitch.

    I'd be fine with either one, but would prefer Garza. From the data, Shields appears to be a guy that has to use his fastball to set up his good pitches; his curve & especially changeup look like good pitches. Garza, on the other hand, looks to have a good fastball & solid slider; his change & curve appear to be just pitches he mixes in to keep hitters honest. Shields *does* throw a cut-fastball, which is a pitch that might get better as he continues to throw it (he started throwing it more in '08). In short, Shields looks like an offspeed stuff guy, whereas Garza looks more like a power pitcher. I'd rather have the power guy, I guess. Imo Melvin has to walk a fine line in not overpaying for Garza, but putting a good enough offer out there to keep Tampa from just waiting it out until after Lee signs. Who knows, maybe the Rays are going to wait until after Lee signs no matter what.

    A lot of what looks like bigger accumulation is just drifting. Not sure how much I'd guesstimate has actually accumulated here yet... hard to say since the wind is blowing so much. I'll take more pics tonight & maybe get a better idea of how much has actually fallen later.

    Ken Rosenthal posted the Werth contract breakdown. The $4M bonus is to be paid between Jan. '11 & Jan. '12. '11: $10M '12: $13M '13: $16M '14: $20M '15: $21M '16: $21M '17: $21M I have a hard time understanding why a team would want to be paying Werth $20M+ AAV for his age 35-38 seasons. I guess it's based on the economy rebounding, but yikes. If Werth is *ahem* worth (sorry) $20M when he's at that age, I guess good for the Nats.

    Tampa has an excess of major league starters and can afford to trade one Not only that, but Tampa has publicly stated they need to drastically cut payroll.     '11 is going to be a huge season for him. If he can prove himself at AA, I doubt he'd fly under too many peoples' radars anymore.

    If Melvin offers Odorizzi, Gamel, Parra, Gomez, and any other prospect in the system other than Jeffress, Rodgers, or Cain, is that enough for two years of Greinke? I seriously doubt it. Just about any organization out there could easily top that offer. It's Odorizzi + Gamel + spare parts, really. And that's probably only because I'm a big Gamel backer. Most people would probably see it as Odorizzi + filler.

    Erik Komatsu is a centerfield candidate, but like you say PrinceEatMeat, he's a few years away still. Kentrail Davis is probably a corner guy, fwiw.

    I know that Suppan had an ERA+ of more than 105 for 7 out of the 8 years before joining the Brewers (baseball-referece.com). To me that's consistently at least slightly above average. Any ERA stat is inherently a team stat, not individual

    Wells & Meche got their contracts in another day & age, when huge money contracts were flowing like water. Not to mention that Wells's extension covers/ed his age 29-35 seasons. Werth signed a deal to cover his ages 32 through 38 seasons. Good grief is that an awful contract! Oh, and fwiw, the Wells contract is just now getting to the ugly stage: 08:$0.5M 09:$1.5M 10:$12.5M 11:$23M 12:$21M 13:$21M 14:$21M The Jays have to be so relieved that Wells bounced back as nicely as he did in '10. However, his defense really appears to have slipped into bad territory the past three seasons, and Wells will probably be getting vastly overpaid for the next four seasons.
