  1. I used to be a huge NBA fan. I couldn't name one player from each team now, and "now" has been really at least the past five seasons. There's no appeal to me at all (beyond the Bucks of course).
  2. Sorry guys, I should have been more clear -- I realized that was HTR who said it, but I'd really like to hear Patrick's take on the Jeffress RP/SP discussion, if he wants to give it.
  3. a closer type reliever Colby, I apologize if you've answered this before on BF, but are you ready to limit Jeffress's projection to a reliever? Just seems like one of those prospect labels that got thrown around by a lot of 'prospect experts' this season once JJ made the switch... which as best I've seen & heard, was a temporary move for the '10 season.
  4. Oh no http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif Very sad to see. At 92, seems like it was a long, full life, though. R.I.P.
  5. PNC seems like a good place for Overbay, short rightfield power ally and spacious centerfield and leftfield gaps. That's a good point; he seems perfectly suited for PNC. Happy for Lyle to find a nice contract, even though it'll be a bit odd seeing him in black & gold.
  6. I'm almost positive the Rangers wouldn't be willing to include enough, prospect-wise, to make up for Young's ugly contract ('11-'13: $16M). The Brewers have no use for Young & no reason to pay an older player so much money. At best right now, he looks like he could provide production in line with what the Brewers already get from McGehee. The difference is Casey does it on the cheap.
  7. No offense to Craig Coshun, but I'm sure many would love to see her back as the "roving reporter."I thought it was Telly Hughes that replaced Trenni
  8. This season's draft's second round picks are pretty far behind the first round, due to lots of comp. sandwich picks. If ever there were a season to forfeit a second rounder, it's this one. But Pavano isn't a player for whom I'd want the Brewers to part with said pick.
  9. That contract is very appealing -- there don't even appear to be buyouts on the team options, if Cot's is 100% correct. If Garza/Shields isn't a possibility, I'd like to see Melvin try to get Carmona. I'd rather have him than Blanton. We could have gotten him extremely cheap a year to two years ago. This would represent a classic and great "buy high" opportunity for Doug Melvin. This cracked me up -- well played.
  10. Why should the Athletic Department have to "[make] an effort", though? To me, that just underscores the problem being with the fanbase. The "effort" that's being made is having a good program year in & year out. That's what an Athletic Department's responsibility is imo, not providing free shuttles when students already have free bus passes. Maybe it's sacrilege to say, but I never got the impression that UW had good or savvy hoops fans (on the whole) in my time there. As hockey fans, the students are second to none, and they're pretty good about football. Basketball is a whole different story imo.
  11. Since that's the case, I like the move for Oakland. There's a chance Harden could be quite good as a reliever, and if that's the case, the A's will have him for peanuts.
  12. UW-Athletics has been very reluctant to institute "rewards" systems like Michigan State has done. Students who show up on time and go to the boring non-conference games should get rewarded with seats for the big games. I love this idea. I think the problem compared with football is nearly 100% related to length of schedule. When a home football game is one of like 6 on the season, it's obviously going to be much easier to get excited about it.
  13. This made me lol when I read it. Wow. You & me both.
  14. Trenni, we miss you. Come back! Thanks for linking, Mass Haas. Interesting to me to hear that Marcum knows Justin James (came up in the TOR org. together), but that's the only guy he knows that's currently in the Brewers' org. EDIT: Via McCalvy's blog: http://brewersbeat.mlblogs.com/assets_c/2010/12/Marcum04%20copy-thumb-550x491-2562091.jpg
  15. The thing I always remember associating with 'Rillo on defense was him charging the slow roller & making a perfect barehand throw to first... just made that play look routine. He was as fun to watch on D as he was at the plate for me.
  16. trwi, that LOL image is hilarious. If BF allowed image signatures, I'd be tempted to use that. Haha! Listening to ESPN New York 1050 and the Michael Kay Show (Yankees YES Announcer) Ugh, Kay... he's alright as a p-b-p guy, good voice, doesn't stumble over his words, not a complete homer. But any time you start hearing "analysis" from Kay, it's time to hit the mute button or change the channel (or internets).
  17. I've always thought a big part of it is that the student (season) tickets are done by lottery system*, and the team has become successful enough under Ryan that even casual hoops fans enter the lottery. Inevitably, many of them win seats too, and you're left with lackluster attendance for too many (imo) games. At least that was my impression when I had student tickets. Too many fans that 'totally wanted Badger hoops tickets', but didn't realize that every game isn't a top-25 battle with Dick Vitale broadcasting. Just pisses me off they don't even put in the miniscule amount of work to offload the tickets to the multitudes of students (or other fans) that would love to be there. * or at least this was the case in my time there. I assume it's still the same method.
  18. Career OPS+/Peak OPS+ w/MIL Molitor: 122/161** Yount: 115/166 Cirillo: 102/123 Cirillo's really not close to the caliber of either Molitor or Yount. He was a solid player, & probably my favorite Brewer of that era, though. ** this was in '87, which wasn't a full season for the Ignitor. 1991's 147 was his best full-season OPS+ with the Brewers (or anyone).
  19. I can't see the Yankees dealing Montero or Gardner right now. They're very high on both players, especially Montero.
  20. Yeah, it definitely looks like Melvin read the market well. Good point, MH.
  21. I don't know if the Brewers will ever be in a Sabathia-type situation again, but if they are, maybe this opens the door to keeping a guy who was all but gone. Prince Fielder...if you're out to get the biggest deal possible, no one can fault you for that...but guess what...you're in a unique profession...you don't HAVE TO. Imo the only thing this deal represents is Cliff Lee. Any player out there already knew he didn't have to take the biggest deal available. The Cliff Lees of the MLB world are rare, but like dlk9s points out (nice catch), cost of living & the intangibles factor in as well. I think if Fielder wasn't out after the absolute biggest contract he could get, he would've signed an extension already. The Brewers have offered him a ton of money on more than one occasion.
  22. Are you really happier that a team that's more direct competition for the Brewers landed this caliber of pitcher? I understand people hate the Yankees, but let's be honest -- there are a lot of teams that have a significant financial advantage over the Brewers, and Philly is one of them. This is still just a rich getting richer result, but since it isn't the Yankees there's not the negative backlash? EDIT: Yankees have struck out on every big name free agent. I don't remember who else they targeted this offseason aside from Lee. I'm pretty sure he was the only one.
  23. The mechanical tweak angle is what I'd be counting on. Clearly he needs to change something about his fastball, but with a new pitching coach to riff on it, I guess I can't stop being optimistic on Manny.
  24. Alright, I might be the only person that thinks this, but I actually hope Melvin is keeping Parra in mind as a possible 5th starter. Parra's FIP & xFIP numbers last season really weren't bad (4.50/3.95). Obviously it would be much better to bring in another reliable SP via trade, but if the only alternative is spending millions of dollars to bring in reclamation projects like Bedard, Washburn, etc., I'd rather see Manny get another shot.
