  1. I agree with that sentiment, but it overlooks how important Venezuelans seem to think Winter Ball is. I'm not sure if other nations hold Winter Ball in as high of esteem, but this isn't just Escobar wanting to play winter ball, it seems like there's a lot of pressure to do so. I'd much rather see him working on getting stronger, though -- especially since I think a huge hurdle for him to hit at the MLB level is being better able to drive the ball.
  2. The Cubs' system is actually pretty solid right now. Here is John Sickels's preliminary look at their top 20 prospects for 2011. He grades the top 6 prospects as "B" or better, and the definition for a B grade is: Grade B prospects have a good chance to enjoy successful careers. Some will develop into stars, some will not. Most end up spending several years in the majors, at the very least in a marginal role. OF Brett Jackson, RHP Trey McNutt, & RHP Chris Archer all grade out at B+ for Sickels, and he ranks those guys 1-2-3 in the system. I saw McNutt make a start last summer against Odorizzi, and McNutt was really good with good velocity. EDIT: for some perspective, here is Sickels's ranking of the Brewers' top 20 prior to the 2010 season. Lawrie & Escobar were the only B+ grades.
  3. Not sure if it was assumed or not, but according to Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago, "A major league source told ESPNChicago.com that Milwaukee is talking to Carl Pavano about a three-year contract." What a terrible freaking idea. Don't forget Pavano's a Type A free agent, so even though the Brewers' first rounder would be protected, they'd still forfeit the second-rounder.
  4. -- "You can't win, but there are alternatives to fighting." This is still true in Brewers fans' situations here, right? Right?!?
  5. Career .824 OPS isn't exactly destroying anything. For comparison's sake, new Diaz has a career .905 OPS against lefties. Francouer still looks pretty solid on defense, so combine that with a cannon for an arm & the reputation for being an elite defender (which he hasn't really been for two or three seasons now), and I guess I can understand why he pulls $2.5M. And because Dayton Moore is terrible.
  6. Hah, "Mat the Batt" ... I'd forgotten that. Good times. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  7. It's scary to think how many HRs Prince could hit at Camden Yards. http://i.min.us/idmDXw.png ______http://www.ballparktour.com/Miller_Park_Dia.gif
  8. Oh shoot, that's right. Not sure how I forgot about Freeman.
  9. Saw this on jsonline. Carlos Villanueva, supercool photobomber: http://media.jsonline.com/images/285*213/DSC00937.JPG
  10. Funny that you mention Atlanta. I was just thinking about how they'd be a potential FA suitor for Prince earlier today. I think they'd be able to afford Prince, and obviously he can get his wish of still playing defense by staying in the NL. ATL & CHC are my guesses right now as to where Prince will wind up, I think. EDIT: But I guess you can't rule out WAS, BAL, or anyone else with money to spend & no long-term 1B/DH
  11. I think it's condescending for Boras to even suggest Fielder will re-sign with Milwaukee at this point. Everyone knows he won't. I think I would have been sorely tempted to slap Scott Boras if I heard him say that in person. Well, the market has kind of been set, though. At this point I think both sides have a good idea of what kind of deal it would take to sign Prince, and imo this is Boras recognizing that Prince won't necessarily have an overwhelming amount of suitors next offseason.
  12. Oh, I didn't mean to say I caught an error from you with Morris... just that it was nice to see him get such a strong review. But overall it's disappointing to see the farm system ranked 24th out of 30 teams.
  13. I'm really concerned that Escobar has a swing that worked in the minors, but won't work in MLB. I hope the Brewers & Alcides can get him(self) back on track.
  14. That's the first I've heard of this. Interesting. And fwiw, Heckathorn's peak WAR is also projected as 4.0. Hunter Morris -- I like this guy -- is projected at 3.5. I really liked what they had to say about his defensive tools (but not the comment right afterwards http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif): Defensively, he has quick feet and a strong arm. His range is above average. I understand why Jeffress continues to get downgraded for his positive drug tests. However, as a Brewers fan & being marginally familiar with the situation, at this point it almost seems a bit lazy to rely on that factor so heavily in grading him. I understand it, though. I just don't think his peak WAR at this point would be 3; I think it'd be closer to 4 or 5, if you're talking *peak*. Jeffress's being ahead of Heckathorn, even though he wasn't projected for as high a peak WAR, makes me think that if you'd ask Hulet again, he'd say 4.0 or so for JJ. I was a bit surprised to see how low Thornburg was on the list, and that Kentrail Davis wasn't even on it. But like you said reilly, it was a really in-depth & well-done scouting report. The pitchers especially seemed well-scouted -- typically these kinds of lists rely purely on stats & player reputations. You could tell Marc Hulet has at least seen video of some of these players. I've seen some of his stuff in the past; I'll have to keep a closer eye on what he puts out in the future.
  15. I'm not sure he'd be a good fit with the Brewers. Even with a home park that's one of the least homer-friendly in MLB, his HR/9 rate was an ugly 1.4. If Nolasco had pitched enough innings to qualify, he would've been tied with Dave Bush & Joe Blanton for the third-worst rate in the NL. Sun Life Stadium's HR park factor this season was .822; compare that to Miller Park's 1.233. Nolasco would seem a veritable lock for 30 HRA each season he pitched as a Brewer. He obviously has an excellent K/BB ratio, so I guess if the Marlins weren't asking for too much, okay. But I'm not sure I'd even want to give up McGehee for him. If the Brewers are moving McGehee, I'd like to see a better pitcher in return.
  16. One reason, and probably the biggest reason that hasn't yet been mentioned, is his defense. Crawford is a stellar defender in LF. Check that, he's an insanely good defender. When you compare Crawford & Hart, their OPS numbers are fairly similar, but Crawford brings better OBP & blows Hart away with the leather. That's why you get Hart for so much less.
  17. Yeah, top-5 players at their positions tend to be well-liked
  18. Good call, my mistake
  19. I think if I'm Andrew Friedman, I have no urgent reason to move Upton. He's still pretty cheap this season ($3M arbitration salary) and has good upside. The Rays are supposedly "motivated to deal" Garza, though. From my (Brewers fanboy) p.o.v., Gamel/Jeffress/Cain is overpaying for two seasons of a relatively expensive Garza. However, I do think the Crew would have to add onto that offer to pry away Upton, who also has two years of team salary control remaining.
  20. Haudricourt: Brewers GM Doug Melvin said he has had more than one talk with Braves about their pitching but "there doesn't seem to be a fit for us."
  21. Haudricourt tweet: Brewers GM Doug Melvin said he's not focusing on any pitchers coming off injury: Webb, Francis, Penny, C. Young, McCarthy, Harden. Have to say I'm kind of relieved to hear that.
  22. Heyman tweets: hearing cliff lee now has two 7-year offers for $20-mil plus. #yankees, #rangers werent planning to go there.
