  1. Noticed this in a recent TH blog post: I'm guessing TH means that it was odd both Sveum & Macha interviewed for the Pirates job, because Macha played for the Pittsburgh organization for 7 seasons (drafted out of the Univ. of Pittsburgh) & is a native of the Pittsburgh area. I'll be interested to see where Dale, Ken, & Willie end up.
  2. I could never do any of this kind of work for the same reason. Terrifying to me.
  3. Couldn't find a thread for the 2010 version of Attanasio's open letter, but in it he discussed the upgrade the Brewers will be making this offseason to the videoboard. Adam McCalvy has a nice blog post up about the first step in the process, which began yesterday: removing the "Miller Park" sign that sat atop the old videoboard. It had been in place since Miller Park opened in 2001. Lots of interesting pictures of the process in the post, as well. 4. I appreciate his work ethic, I do, but if the organization is behind this winter ball thing again I'm rapidly losing faith. He already dominated winter ball last year and that didn't help him during the 2010 season, what good is going back going to do him? I remember hearing (iirc) BA talk on one of the broadcasts this season about how big winter ball is in the Latin American countries. I hope the decision was Alcides's, because I agree if it's the organization that it's disappointing. It's disappointing in any event, but I'd rather have it be disappointing on an individual player basis than organization-wide.
  5. I've read/heard that one reason Rogers's BB rate looks so bad in the minor is that he was often working on his secondary pitches. Small sample of course, but his command looked very good in the bigs this season, and his 2.7 BB/9 supports that. Frankly, I think he's basically MLB-ready now, but agree with Toby that the Brewers would probably be foolish to not stash him in AAA for the early parts of '11 & salvage an extra year of salary control.
  6. Can't remember if it was TheCrew07 or X ellence who'd said earlier this season that he'd flip out if Escobar plays winter ball again instead of hitting the weights this offseason. I'd really like to see Alcides add some muscle, too.
  7. Unfortunately, Escobar will be playing winter league ball as well. Link
  8. I haven't seen any significant update on Loux yet, but the latest semi-news is that the Astros won't offer him a contract. Going off a story last month, that crosses the Astros off the list of teams that watched Loux throw... leaving the following likely still in the hunt: Marlins, Rangers, Cubs, Twins, Giants, Brewers, Phillies and Mariners.
  9. Dice-K was supposed to win multiple Cy Youngs. I *really* don't remember hearing this. Who said that? Same about Johjima as a superstar. I'm not saying I know these comments were never uttered, but who said them? And I definitely didn't hear anything about Fukudome that would make him performing poorly against MLB LHP a shock.
  10. Prince hit .233 in 146 ABs w/ RISP. 146 ABs is substantive enough to reflect a legit trend. Fielder's OPS w/RISP 2007: .968 2008: .890 2009: 1.049 2010: .753 Career overall OPS: .919 There's absolutely no trend, just that in this season's small sample of RISP PAs, he didn't hit as well as he has in years past. The OPS w/RISP list is a Sesame Street "One of these things is not like the others" skit. You can find severe underperformance or overperformance for any player in the league if you seek out a ~150 PA sample. I haven't looked into this at all, but Prince's .451 OBP w/RISP this season suggests pitchers may have been pitching very, very carefully to him & not giving him pitches to drive. If he hadn't gotten on base at an insane clip, I'd have a bigger problem with Prince's results w/RISP. But I'm never going to believe that it's not a very good thing to get on base 45% of the time when there's already at least a runner on second.
  11. David Aldridge is clearly out of his element as a sideline reporter for baseball. Tonight's main goof that I saw was calling Ryan Madson "Roy Halladay" as the bullpen guys walked past Cole Hamels on their way to the clubhouse just before Hamels was going to give Aldridge the endgame interview.
  12. I read the now-vanished post, and it also mentioned/wondered if this had something to do with a trade. Would there be any other reason(s) guys would get scratched? I don't recall hearing anything about Lawrie being injured, and iirc the whole point with Schafer was to get him some game action this season since he missed so much time due to injury.
  13. Matsui was a very good player before injuries & age finally caught up to him. Besides, there have been plenty of good Japanese players.
  14. I guess I'd like to know a specific example where "doing his own thing" was detrimental to the club. His ridiculously bad defense. Reminds me of Shaq's free throw shooting -- no one can be *that* bad if they're honestly working hard to improve.
  15. I have no problem with what he said about Fielder and Braun. He wasn't disresptful, just calling it how he sees it (fair or not). I don't either, and frankly it wouldn't surprise me one bit to learn that those two guys have a bit too much diva in them.
  16. That's his former delivery, the two-stage delivery I mentioned he had to ditch after NPB outlawed them.
  17. A-Rod's hip problem last season was a torn labrum. He had surgery on March 9th of '09, and his first game back was May 8th of the same season. Obviously every case is unique, but hopefully Manny's isn't severe. Here's an image illustrating where the labrum is in relation to the hip joint, from a SI.com article about A-Rod's procedure[/url]: http://i2.cdn.turner.com/si/2009/writers/david_epstein/03/08/arod.hip/T1_0308_hipdiagram.jpg
  18. Read this on Baseball America's Prospect Blog. The Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles are making Iwakuma available to MLB clubs one year before he'd be an international free agent. BA had ranked Iwakuma as #3 on their WBC '09 Top 10 Prospects list (a subscriber article that I otherwise would have linked). Here's their writeup of him at that time: Here's the Japan Times article BA cited in posting about Iwakuma's availability. Iwakuma's '09 WBC stats & NPB stats. The Baseball Cube has Iwakuma's stats through '09. He had shoulder problems in '05 & '06, and had surgery on his elbow in the offseason prior to 2008. NPB banned two-stage deliveries (which is what Iwakuma used) in 2005, and re-working his mechanics may well have led to his injuries. However, he's come back very strong. Not sure what kind of market there will be for him, or if the Brewers could even realistically afford a posting fee. MLBTradeRumors notes that his agent has also represented Hideo Nomo & Hideki Irabu. Here's some video of him (no English subtitles & all audio is in Japanese) --
  19. Jeffress didn't pitch in Nashville. Only two candidates for me. Braddock and Gamel. I'd guess Gamel just based on Braddock being a reliever. Oh, I thought cj's print issue was looking forward to the '11 season.
  20. I got my print issue of BA the other day, and can tell you that one Brewers farmhand is listed on the PCL top 20 list. Jeffress or Gamel... probably Jeffress
  21. I think so too, bruce. And doesn't a managerial hire have to wait until after the WS anyway? If any of Doug's candidates are still coaching, obv. he can't exactly interview them.
  22. That's hilarious. JumpinMac, you said everything I wanted to.
  23. Have you tried going again in person?
  24. I'd pat you on the back, but you seem to have that covered. And Zaun was easily better than Kendall, obv. he got hurt. EDIT: Wow. I just actually checked how bad Kendall was this season. .615 OPS, and he somehow managed to get 490 PAs.
